Coconut Palm Sugar

I was watching a cooking show on TV yestersay and the cook used coconut palm sugar..me being a sweet tooth and can't give up sugar thought what she said about it was very interesting...I had never heard about this before but she said it is better than any other sugar, better for your health ... has anyone heard of this before and has anyone used it....

Coconut palm sugar or we call it locally 'Gula Malaka' is brown in color and comes in cylinder form or in slabs and is one of the main ingredients used in making desserts and local cakes. It is derived from coconut palms, as it's name suggest and can be found easily here. I used coconut palm sugar quite frequent when ever I make desserts.

Oh ok, I went to the health food shop today to try and get some but they didn't have it but will be getting some in as I was the second person in one day to ask about it...Thank you for your response...

Like you I've heard of them using it in the cooking shows. I've never used it myself. I don't have a clue where to get it.

+well the healthfood shop is going to get it in after two requests and one response further up said Asian shops might be the way to go...

yes, I read that...I have thought about it. If you are military or can go to the commissary or know someone that can, they sale all kinds of foods for all nationalities. They may have it too. And I have asked Wal-Mart to carry certain things and they will check on it to see about getting it.

I think I know what it is. We use a lot of it and it roughly translates to palm sugar in our language. We use it a lot for young children...instead of refined sugar.
It is supposedly very good for many ailments and can be used for infants too. Not to be mistaken for jaggery.

I'm not familiar with Coconut Palm Sugar.
It seems like an interesting concept.

I am having trouble finding it also, I have tried health food shops but they didn't have it so I am going to check out asian grocery stores to see if they have it.
