When did we all become zombies at work?

There are times when I just feel like I am going through the motions of everyday routine. We get up, drive to work, do a little bit of our work, have lunch, do some more work, drive home, drive the kids to afterschool activities, have dinner, go to sleep, and then do it all over again the following day. It feels like I’ve become a zombie!
I keep asking myself when did I start to become like this? Was it when I got the responsibilities of children? Or was it when I got mortgaged?
Do you get days like these? Does your work seem like routine? No-thinking-required?
I can’t wait to go travelling for work again!

Same here. Zombie day in, day out. At work, at least. I become alive again the moment I step out of our dreaded office. That is why I need to get out of here. And fast. In your case, since you've got some responsibilities, why not spice up your life once in a while? If you have time to spare, take up a hobby or something. Or, there's always weekends. I feel alive on weekends.

Yes! MyLot has become a hobby at work for me, too! When I'm under information-overload mode, I get relief by sneaking into mylot and doing my thing here. At least, I'd done something fun for the day.

Literally, I do like a zombie with my previous work. I stay up til 3 am. Go home at 4 am. Wake up at 7 am or 8 am. Freshen up and go to work again. It happens 6 times a week. But actually, my mind must be awake when I work. It will cost me a lot for a single error I make with my job.

Great exchange of information here!
I'd like to add my experience too. Although it isn't as tough as yours doggydimon. I used to work graveyard shifts, and had to take care of my kid during the day. When you're son is only 2-3 years old and does not have any concept of letting you sleep, you wake up every 30 minutes for some silly questions. And I thought having intermittent sleep was even touger for the body.
Thankfully, I am over that phase now.

I only sleep on my day off...hahaha... That is why I resigned. My body can't take it anymore... hehehe... I have been like that for 3 or 4 years already...

Yes..yes..and yes. I have and do face times when I feel like the routine has taken the person that I am. There is needed seperation and then there is responsibility that drives it. I think that sometimes we just tend to "fall into place." Breaking free is the hardest because there is no tru stability in that and you know you have the income with the job. I do try to keep myself somewhat energized by breaking routine and there is no routines allowed on my few days off..lol.

From this discussion I realized that some work are really routine like. Which makes it zombie-like. Specially if we deal with things or paperwork.
And there are the other kinds of jobs which involves dealing with people. Where you get to be engaging, and not like a zombie.
Sadly, my work is not so much the latter type.

Thank goodness, my work still requires me to think, and to study each time I have a new audit engagement..Although at times, I do get to thinking how our lives are so robotic. When I go to work everyday, I ride a van, and each and everyday, I see the same people at the same time. It seems like nobody is exempted to the monotonous cycle of our lives.

Yeah, waking up each day at the same time, and doing the same thing every single day sometimes is scary when you think about it..

I think that this kind of feeling is something that is even worse for me as a stay at home mother. You would think that with me not having the daily obligations that people who work outside the house have that it wouldn't matter to me whether it was Monday or Saturday, I could get out and about as I wanted to. However, I find that I live for the weekend so that the schedule can be changed up a little bit from what I have to do on a daily basis.

I never really thought of that!
I guess when you have kids, and they also fall into a routine of going to work from Monday to Friday, then your schedule does get fixed. And a little bit zombie-like.
I could definitely relate on the change up on weekends. Specially when the whole family is together.

I have giant gaps of my life that have felt like that. Not always with work though.. just typical daily or weekly routines. Lately though things have changed quite a bit so I certainly do not feel like anything is routine right now. Sometimes all you really need is a small change.

I guess getting that Subway job does make it non-zombie like!
And I realized from this discussion that working with people helps make it not a zombie-type of work. As opposed to just working on things.
Your new job does make it interesting as you would be able to see different types of people come in.
Thanks.

I never ever felt like a zombie when I was working in child care as a teacher, director or supervisor. I always felt there was room for improvement, and that we could make the life of a child better. I did feel like a zombie when I was working in a store...stocking shelves. That didn't take much thinking at all...just punch and put on shelf.

I just realized the there are two kinds of jobs. And for me, that have not worked with people, I've always looked at the process as zombie-like. I've never have to deal with people before.
So, I guess this is where my discussion falls short. Not everybody can relate to it.
Thanks for pointing that out.

I have felt like that for a very long time as it was the same ole same ole routine day in and day out.
Then the children grew up and am in situation where as I am scrambling for work so once again, I have a routine with a purpose in mind.
So once again, I am zombied out of my mind.

You mean to say when the children grow up, it'll just be more of the same?!
Darn! I was hoping to live a little when they all move out of the house.
It is like a long marathon, with the finish line still way, way out there. No wonder it feels zombie-like.
Thanks.
