My final project in my biology class is a group presentation on an assigned ecosystem. So far I have had pretty much creative freedom with my presentations but that is over...LOL...at least for this one. Our ecosystem is the Temperate Forest. Ok..I was kinda hoping for a desert or a painforest but OK...we all agreed on the Appalachian Blueridge. Well...this an actual locall area for me so I am thinking..hmm..what would spice up a presentation? Ok...walking ou to my car from work I see this stuffed fox sitting in the front seat of this guys car that I work with. It actually scared the fire out of me and for a moment I thought someone had left their dog in their car..anyway I talk to the guy the next day and find out he is in taxidermy on the side. Well..I was thinking if we had something neat to do our presentation on...it might get us all a great grade but I find out that all he has for himself is a big stuffed wild turkey...hmm...perfect..I think..we could talk about the things a turkey eats..what the turkey does..what eats the turkey...i even thought of having a picture of my hunting/taxidermy friend as a predator Anyway...only one out of four of my group was on board..no one else cared for the idea at all...lol..ok..so its back to the basic old powerpoint. Have you ever been involved in a group project that hindered your creativity?
What do you think about the stuffed turkey? Too much or just enough to really take the cake?

Of course it's always easier & there's more freedom when we do projects alone as we can freely express ourselves; but when it comes to group project, communication is very important in order to fully reach the potential of your whole group. Synergizing is the key yet easier said than done. Group dynamics is just different from the lone ranger pursuits, haha!~Then again, he did have a sidekick? Haha!~Anyways, IMHO, if it's an individual project we can go to the extreme as that represents us; yet in a group. somehow there's got to be an equilibrium, meaning having a gist of everyone, representing each individual's character. It's just like a family, I mean everyone has their own traits yet they are a dynamic unit when stand united, a force to be reckoned withI hope you find that in your group presentation. All the best!~

Personally, I tend to think that group presentations have to be one of the worst. It is often because no one seems to agree on just one thing, and usually someone ends up doing way more of the work then all the others, while everyone else wants to take all the credit. Personally this would be an interesting one to think on, but hey being more creative like you wanted to be is a Great way to do it, unless they were thinking this is too much like show and tell or "Old School". I do wish you the Best in this project and hope you all can come to a good decision on what is best as well.

I have almost decided I don't really like the group thing...lol...I am hanging in there though. The professor actually asked for creativity. She said to let it all hang out.. My team is a bit more conservative though so I guess we are doing powerpoint. So far so good on the work load though. Thanks for responding.

I think it sounds like a grand idea. Did you ask these others that didn't agree what they had in mind? I would try to talk them into it either by common comoradery, black mail, pay them off or fisty cuffs. People make such a hard way of it. What do they want the lime light and full attention and you are beating them out. Well, leave it to me to find fault, huh? Wish I could be of more help but not all my pistons are firing I guess. Good luck! You have my vote.

Well, what if this were the scenario- you produce a presentation that they would be idiots to refuse. They see how great an idea it is and go with it. I will hope that that is the way it goes. Wish I could be of more help. Maybe someone else has a better idea.

They could talk about that turkey too. I wouldn't even tell the teacher it was all my idea..they just want to do the traditional powerpoint. I don't have time to blackmail them or beat them up..it's due Monday. Gotta pick something and go with it..we meet tomorrow to pull everything together.

Play fair, what were some of the other ideas? You ask us to judge but only give us half the problem. You do know that the turkey's great claim to fame, other than Thanksgiving dinner was that it almost became our national bird, instead of hte bald eagle. It's really a very flexable bird.

LOL...fair is fair...the only thing they wanted to do was a powerpoint on the plants, animals, trees, and predators...the basics. I just wanted to throw in something unique...the turkey happened to be what the taxidermy guy had he could loan me..LOL...I had no idea it was almost the national bird! Wow...I did know it was almost extinct here at one time but they thrive here now.

When is this due? I do slideshows, using Photodex ProShow Producer software. It's a h*ll of a lot more exciting than Powerpoint with its transitions, captioning, multiple layers, etc. I can create a show using photos, slides, negatives, video, etc. What I'm thinking is creating a story using the fox or the turkey and taking pictures of it in its habitat. I can caption each slide with whatever your team comes up with. In other words, your team would come up with the storybook, photos, and captions and send them to me, at least two, preferably three, weeks before its due. Also pick the music you want. I'll find/download the music. I have a business and do this for customers. For you and your team, I'd just do it so you'd have something truly different. Think about it; talk to your team. But I'd need the storyline/book or theme and pictures, like I said two to three weeks before it's due. I can upload the show to YouTube or my website so your team could see it before I send the DVD or you could show it in class as a YouTube video. We could make any changes up until you're ready to show it, if you use YouTube. I can upload to other sites as well, but if you're interested, we can talk about that later. Just a thought...

Oh my that is a wonderful idea. I may have to lean on you in the future, but our project is due Monday. That sounds very interesting! Creative too. I would love to have something like that in the future. I am forever doing presentations for this degree..lol..they love to put you in front of people and make you sweat. The first one I did, I thought I was going to die..lol..my heart beat so fast I could hear it in my ears. I think that might have been the cloeset I have been to an anxiety attack. Thanks for the offer.

Well, keep it in mind. If you ever want to see what it could look like, just yell and I'll point you to the website I usually post my client's stuff and sometimes I put one on YouTube.
I hear you on speaking in front of a group... Even though I ended up doing it hundreds of times in my career, it was always scary. When I taught at New Mexico State University, as a Visiting Instructor, while still getting my Masters and afterwards, was the worst. I usually had 175 or so "kids" in my big classes. To get over the anxiety, I use to "act" when I taught. I learned drama/declaim in high school, so I leaned on what I knew...acting. So, it wasn't me talking in front of the group, it was Professor So-and-so. It worked. That's all I can say.

I am glad to see that you keep on being so happy and such! (I mean after your "how did I spent my weekend" post). It seems to me that the whole group presentation experience rocked for you.
Apparently, that kind of presentations are pretty common in American Education System, because stuff like that is depicted in series and movies all the time. I wish it were like that here, but unfortunately here it's all more about studying hard, memorizing and responding to some questions in an exam, with a less practical evaluation process. Way to go Jen

There was a lot of that studying and exam thing in the beginning, but this is the final project. They love to take you "out of the box" and put you up in front of people. I don't like it, but if I am going to have to do it, I wanted to be creative with it...lol...my group is great but they are a bit more traditional than I am I guess.

Good morning, Jen....I think your Turkey idea, is great and wished I was there to take it to the fullest with you! A show and tell of it's environmental impact and vice versa; the environmental impact on it! So sorry, your "turkey" cohorts have nixed your ideas!
Yes, I am about to throw up my arms..and resign from the "Funding Committee" for our Animal ResQ! We have nearly milked and exhausted this community (remember very limited being an Island) with Dances, Bingo games, 50/50 draws..and what have you! My thoughts were too lean towards, on going...NOT ONE-shot fund raisers! And NOT T-shirts! Most person's on this Island, own a pet of some form...and if a flourescent star was put on your address sign, and a decal on your door, or window nearest the door, with a flourescent pet picture, dog and cat...you would put a check by one or other, OR both. Then when Fire, or Ambulance came, they also would be made aware..in case of Fire, to search for that animal, too/or notify proper authorities...same with Ambulance, if you are taken away. Emergency personnel would know there are pets there, too..that need assistance! So far, nixed! And my other idea, of creating "Lead Free" grocery shopping bags, insulated or not, from a renewable resource like Hemp or Bamboo...all of us volounteers spending a few hours a week sewing them, would be an on-going income source. Ah...my rant for the week! LOL!
I love your Turkey idea...and think you should run with it! Have a great weekend...and rainbows and HUGZ!

Have these people NOT understood that this is supposed to be a "group" project, in all aspects. Easy for them to "nix" your idea..but have they proposed anything better...and it's not, exactly like you have a lot of time to see this to fruition! I hope, that seeings you are facing another lost weekend, that should have been your down time...that you are getting some support! Thanks for your support, too.....Our local Volounteer Fire department is always fund-raising for upgrading of equipment, and I think I will take the decal idea to them! There is not a pet-owner that I have approached that doesn't think it a good idea. Take care and hugs.

Those are great ideas...I don't understand why they are not grabbed and used. I do wish my group was a bit more creative. It's tough when what you have to do depends on others..lol..maybe I'm being a little selfish though.
Thanks for responding and hang in there.

JenInTn hi I would have picked the stuffed fox and worked around that if it had been me.I mean the poor fox has been hunted and hounded so would be a great projest. I once was in a group who were to present a chemistry
presentation and one by one the others all boys just dropped o ut and told me I was smart enough to finish the project by myself. grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr then on the day of the presentation this moron decided to help me as he was a better speaker so what does he do while explaining our project He waves around a vial of sulfuric acid
and slashes it on my skirt. The stuff starts burning a hole in my woolen skirt and the instructor gets some antidote and covers my leg with it before the acid can burn my skin. So I finish the presentation and I get'a A for doing the most of the wor k by myself and the moron with the acid flunked out on chemistry class.

Group projects were always a fun way to do assignments in school. it was a way to learn and do something creative with your friends. the only downfall seemed to be who was deerving of the idea and the grade. One person seemed to be the leader and they often took all of the credit too.

Hi JenInTN,
When working on an assignment for studies, it is always a problem when they put you in the ummm not so right group for you. I was into one such group where no one bothered about participating. Though I was happy about this initially because that did give me the freedom to do everything on my own, I was really pained when the marks were allotted to all for my efforts... Jealous me but then why not?
I think it is all about how you look at the opportunity and if you can afford to fight your own way, go ahead and do it. After All it is the knowledge gained that matters.

It is the knowledge gained and this class has been very interesting. I guess I just wanted to take advantage of the creative freedom that the professor was giving us..lol..I wanted to see the look on her face when we come carrying in a turkey..lol. Thanks for the response.

That sounds like a good idea to me because it would be a real turkey to give more of the idea that you are wanting to give. Group things are hard sometimes because it is hard to get everyone to agree on the same thing and in some cases it is hard if your group of people are lazy and don't want to think of anything and just want everything done for them.
The good parts about them is sometimes you can have a group of people that are very helpful so you can get done with a project a lot easier. Hopefully you all think of something that is good and get a real good grade on it. Good luck and have a very good week!

Me too. I know that you gotta do group projects and such but I am a little "out of the box" sometimes with my way of thinking..lol..I also like to have fun with things. I would have give anything to see the look on that teacher's face when we come hauling in a big wild turkey.

I like the turkey idea. It would be a fun way to demonstrate some facts. It is a shame when working in a group that you can become really excited about an idea only to have it shot down in flames! One thing to be grateful for is that the people in your group are at least willing to all work together and not leaving it to just one person to do all the work! I guess you have to compromise and go along with it as best you can. Good luck with it Jen...

I did compromise and it went fairly smooth. There was one member that didn't want to actually contribute but that is part of it too I guess...lol..I don't like the group thing as much as I do solo. It does help with standing in front of people though when your not by yourself.

I couldn't really picture how the turkey would relate to the Appalachian Blueridge.
I remember being in a group in Psych class. We had to do a presentation, but nobody really wanted to extend themselves to show some creativity. I had to pull out some lines during the presentation to engage the rest of the class. The audience thought I was funny, but the rest of my group just stood there. Bummer!

Maybe they feel the same way..but it was actually hunted here. I live near the Great Smoky Mountains. I guess I chose the turkey because it was available and it was once endangered here. It was some 20 years before they repopulated and now they are abundant...anyway..it's not a huge deal..I think we have it worked out but it will be a traditional presentation.
I will be giving introduction. I also have to finish a food web today..I might get creative with that
