My roommate and I have 5 mini long hair dachshunds. I have never been a big fan of smaller dogs. I have always had Dobermans, golden retriever so being around these small dogs was quite a change. I have fallen in love with these little lovers. I can't imagine not having them now. We have one who has chosen my daughter to be his human. He pines for her when she is at school or at her dads. I have another male who just wants to lay in my arms. As a matter of fact I had to have a 2nd back surgery last year these wonderful dogs hung out in bed and whenever I was hurting it seemed that they knew and snuggled up to the painful spot on back to apply heat. They are also great at letting you know if someone is around. They are very protective of all family members not just one as many believe. If you haven't ever had any interaction with this type of breed you really should. They have changed my thoughts on small breed dogs.

Twrobel, I had a Doxie mix for 12 years before he passed away. Coming home to an empty house was hard so I now have two Mini's. One rescue one bought both are long hairs and are the most lovable companions anyone can ask for. I too had back surgery be very careful you feel great but you have to train yourself not to lift heavy things anymore, even if you think you can.

I have never seen a mini dachshunds, they would be so cute, I prefer smaller dogs, I am used to having cats, not sure about playing around with breeding though..I love cats and dogs, they are a gift to we humans.

Hi, twrobel...Dachshunds are indeed a fine breed. My first puppy was a miniature. At one time I had 4 in my home. They were all miniatures and one was black smooth haired, one black long haired, and two brown smooth haired. They were a lot of fun but were terribly jealous of each other and I had to settle several fights. Then I had another who had been with me about 11 years and she was run over by a speeder in the trailer park where I lived. I haven't had dachshunds since that one. But I've had many many dogs and cats. They've been my family more or less.

I have had short hair miniature dachshunds in my life for a long time. My first one was about 30 years ago. I agree they are very good protectors for the family. Mine use to go with me everywhere I went. I use to have a VW van and she would protect it if anyone got within a couple feet of it. Even though the size of these little dogs make people laugh when they bark at them. They can be pretty fierce and take a good bite out of someone if they wanted to.
