Personally I think we have all experienced that one, or run into someone knowing you know them from somewhere, but cannot remember their name or from where. It can be frustrating especially if they remember yours. But usually I just take time to talk to them if they want to talk, and catch up on everything usually acting like I did not forget their name or anything just to be social.

I think this happens to every one at one time or another. I would become familiar with the bank clerks and then see then some place else and would recognize them but couldn't remember where or their names.
One day at church a few of us were visiting in the kitchen and a good friend came in and I had just thought of her name but when I turned to speak to her the name was gone. I tried and tried to remember it but to my embarrassment couldn't. She was so gracious about it when I told her I couldn't remember her name. We all had a good laugh about it.
I have had friends and co-workers that called every one Sweety or hon or something similar. That way they didn't have to remember names.

That happens to me a lot of times, now that i am older. When that happens, i would simply say, " i am sorry dear , but because i have gotten old, i just cannot remember your name but your face looks so familiar " . That will start the re-introduction.

oooohhh! That is the saddest situation! =O
What I do is that joke around and keep talking to them but avoid saying their name.If it becomes necessary joke around a little and ask them in a teasing tone what their name is again =P All you can hope then is that they buy it and tell you ^_^

This usually happens to me but not with an old friend, but with new ones. When I'm in a new school, the first week I struggle remembering their names lol. I ask their names with some clasmates or just say HEYYY lol But once I remember, I never forget their names.

I would just be honest, and ask them. No harm in that, and I am sure if they recognized my face but couldn't remember my name they would do the same. Well...at least I hope they would.

This has happened to me in quite a number of situations. In person, in calls, in texts, even in just looking at pictures. One time I ran into an old groupmate of mine back in college. We had our internship at the same hospital but we weren't schoolmates. We became close though for a period of 6 months. So I was like "heeeeeeey.... you..... look at you.... how are you?" And she was like "OMG Kat it's good to see you! How are you?" blah blah blah... throughout our little chitchat i was trying to recall her name, feeling embarrassed by the fact that she remembered my name, but I cant recall hers. I failed in my quest though. As we were saying goodbye, in order to refresh my memory of her, I casually asked her to save her number in my cellphone herself. Luckily for me she didn't notice my attempt to hide my ignorance. We said our goodbyes and promised to communicate more. And so I browsed my phone book and there it was. I came across the familiar name that was hers and I immediately texted her saying "this is my number Karen". haha. face saved.

Just talked to them as if I did not forgot their names. Probably I will be able to remember after a few minutes or so. If not, then I have to think of a segway to make them say something that I will remember their name

hmmm,, this never happened to me actually.,.atleast not with a friend. well depending how long you havnt seen this friend you cant blame yourself for not remembering his/her name.,. i think it normal to forget peoples name depending how long you haven't seen or heard from him/her.. idk best advice i could give, its either try really hard to remember and see what comes to mind, or say I'm sorry you may think of me as a jerk but i cant remember your name, :/
