I recently learn this trick from google, and it was about "ping" a website through cmd.exe. It was a funny trick according to them, and you simply type "ping", then follow by the web address of a particular website. Then hit "enter". So, what does this "Ping" actually do though? Why it is so interesting to type this command on cmd?

Ping needs an IP address : it can be the IP of your router or printer if it is in your local network, not only of a website. It is useful to test the basic connectivity and the quality of the network communication between your computer and material or a website. You can see if it is down for you or active, and the speed of the transmission and the quality of the packets transmitted.
On IRC or telnet ping is used to find the response time between you and the server and to see if there is some netlag for the connection -- if this delay is important --.

So, now how do you ping the network connection whether it is working or not? Do you have ping your own network ip or something like that?

You are speaking of your local network ? The addresses of your computers, printers, etc. are generally given by your router. You can see them in the configuration menu of the router itself that you can access with your browser. When you know the address of a device you can ping it. You can also ping the router. By example, I can ping my router with : ping 168.0.0.1

ping is used for checking the connections that you want to check if it is alive or not. if you ping a certain IP add and it gives you a 4 consecutive messages it means the address is alive and if it gives you a message saying host is "unreachable", i hope you know what it means..
