We all go to the grocery stores or most of us do to buy our groceries, you know like the neccessities for our lives, food, toilet paper, shampoo, soap, laundry soap. and just every day needs. And when I go I like to get the big basket, you know like they have the big basket and the small carrying baskets and I was wondering if we don't have a lot of money to spend would you consider using the big basket knowing that you had to watch what you spent or do you think if you grab the small carry basket would it help you with your spending habits?

Good discussion topic! I usually get a cart if I have my kids with as many times they whine like my son to go into the cart even if you are just stopping in for a few things. Otherwise I just get a basket to get what I need and call it a day.
Now people try that at my work they either grab a bag or a cart or go w/o anything. It's funny to see people that hoped they wouldn't find as much as they did when they go w/o a cart. Sadly that's part of marketing strategies to have bigger carts so you fill it up as when you look in there it doesn't look as full as it would if it was a smaller cart size.

Thanks and that is so true about the marketing stragities with the basket being bigger and all, I know I have seen some people go in to Aldi's only carrying their bags and other grocery stores too and they always end up going back to get a basket whether it be a big or small one L.O.L. Have you ever noticed someone doing that? I myself have started with a small basket and ended up going back in the store where the baskets were to get a bigger one! hehehehe Have a good day!!

Hi Jaher,
I don't like carrying baskets so whenever I shop and I only have a few things to buy, I get the carrying basket and put it in the pushcart (big basket) so I don't need to carry it. I don't think the size of the basket would affect my spending coz before going to the grocery store I already have in mind what I need to buy, and I always watch my budget.

Hi Doryvien! There you got a valid point that the size of basket would really affects one spending, as most of us have a plan in our minds as to what to buy and in what quantity to buy!
I liked your idea of carrying the small basket in a trolley as it saves our energy from carrying the basket to the counter! LoL!
But then I could really get why don't you put the items directly into the trolley instead of using a basket?

It depends on what I'm going to buy. If I need heavy things like milk or large things like those big packaged of toilet paper, then I get a big cart. If I'm just running in for a few things like a loaf of bread and such, then a small basket does fine. Most of the time I don't go to the store until I have to buy several things, though, so I usually use the big basket.

I usually get the big baskets too when I know I am going to be buying a lot of groceries too, especially the big things like you mentioned the big toilet paper packages and also like the 12 or 24 packs of cokes or water.

I would prefer small carry basket and not spending more money on the grocery. As far at my home, we take the stock of grocery and then we list it down what do we really require and then go for purchasing the necessities. It avoids me spending my energy and money also.

I usually get a small one if I am only going for a few things but I mainly get the small carry basket if and when I go to the dollar stores but I have to say I have found myself using the larger basket in the dollar store as well. Have a good day!

I get the idea and I agree that somehow if you have set your mind on buying only the stuff that you need and carry a small basket that would just fit every stuff that you would buy, you will surely save a fair amount of money. It works for me too.
Though, there are times that even I am only buying few groceries, I use the big basket (w/ wheels) so that my child can sit on it and I would be at ease when buying groceries

I get the big one always, regardless of how much I get because I always keep a count of what my total will be when I check out.

For me small basket would be out of question, as we go for grocery shopping once in a month and together with our dogs we are family of eight members (My wife, my Son and me Plus my five dogs)and you can imagine what would be the volume of the things we must be purchasing then!? Many a times our second trolley also gets full and we have to take third trolley, if the trolley size is smaller!
Naturally with such a voluminous purchase it becomes easy for us to carry the items in the trolley to the car parking where we can easily load the items in to the car, Other wise carrying these items to the Car itself would be a big punishment for us!
Of course, some times in addition to these trolleys, either my wife or my son they pick up a small basket to have their requirements into those baskets, when we feel that these trolleys are fully loaded and it wouldn't be possible to roam around with these any more in the Mall!
So you could have come to know by this time for us the shopping is a big balancing exercise and we are doing it every month without fail, as I am staying on the farm which is practically about 45 Kilometers away from the hopping Mall!
Thanks!

When I go to grocery stores, I must take the big cart because first, I have my baby with me when I go to do grocery so I need to put the carseat on the cart; second, I usually buy a lot of food when I go to the grocery store so a little basket won't do it. I seldom take the little basket anyway because I have noodle arms, I have hard time carrying heavy goods.

I usually get the big baskets just to put my purse in and have something to lean on but like in the Dollar Store there is hardly any baskets and the stores here where I live I mean the Dollar stores are so small I usually get the small basket, but in the grocery store I will go for the big basket most of the time. Well have a good day!!

I would not get a big basket if I had a limit to spend as with the smaller one it is easier to see what you have picked up as the room quickly fills up but with the bigger basket it does not. This means that before you know it you will buy things you dont need and have properly spend too much.

I just like the big grocery basket when I am tired but I was thinking maybe if I grab the little one I wouldn't spend too much.

The small carrying baskets are to heavy once you start putting in things even though im not getting alot. I always get the cart becasue i can put my purse down and buggle it in and not have to worry abou it falling off when i go to get something off the shelf. its alot easier to jsut get a cart even though i might onle be getting a couple things. Those couple things could be soda and milk and i dont need to be carrying that around the store and then holding it waiting in line to check out.

Regardless of how little I plan on spending I still get the big cart, simply for convenience as the baskets are sort of awkward as I put items in it.
I usually stay close to my mental and or written list regardless of the size of the basket.

It is always hard for me to stick to the list I make because I will run across things that are on sale and only for a short period of time and it is hard to pass up a good deal in the store! So usually I will try to start with the little basket if I know I only have a little bit of money, but if I start running across the aisles like the discount aisles I will go back for the big basket. L.O.L. Happens a lot to me.
