I got a package last week from my daughter....enclosed was a pot holder my granddaughter made on a loom. The bright colors she chose make me smile, everytime I hold it....I remember when I was little we also had a loom and made these same pot holders. Did you ever use a loom for weaving? Did you also make pot holders for your mom or grandmother?

Well, looks like someone is taking after their grandmother in the craft area. She did a wonderful job, it's beautiful jill, I am sure it is a treasured gift. I have made a couple pot holders as a kid, but I don't know if I gave them to my mom or not, its been too long..lol

That's wonderful when a child is getting into something you are good at, they kind of look up to you and enjoy learning from you. I am sure you'll have a great tiem with your granddaughter..:)

That's a "pertty" one, I'd've never been quite that brave with colors, but I was always into symmetry and stuff.

I did have a little loom, though I don't think I ever made a pot holder. I think most of my pieces never actually became anything at all in fact. But the fun was in the weaving!

I wish I could say I had a nurturing kind of mother to show me the way for these things. I had three wonderful aunts who helped me along. One of them gave me a little plastic toy loom. It came with enough material or yarn or something it kept me busy for weeks! I was so excited! It broke and was thrown out. Since then I've been fascinated by the big real ones, especially in antique stores! These things operate on a matrix, they were the original matrix system that all computer code is written with today! The DOS matrix. Very simple in design, either its there or it isn't! History, innovation, the industrial evolution! Your little granddaughter has been given all the tools necessary to become fascinated about learning. You get the benefit of watching your personal contribution to the world thrive!

Sweet!! I still have 2 of those little looms from when I was a kid. Now I have my grandchildren making the same kind of potholders with it. It's fun to watch them pick their color schemes, and they work so hard on getting it just the way they want it. Have to laugh, I still have the ones my own kids made for me when they were little. Good project, and useful too!

Hi rameschow, yes, they are about 5 x 5 inches square. You do it all by hand. You have these little rayon cloth circles (like rubber bands) and you attach them across the pegs that stand up around the perimiter from one side to the other, then you go across the other way, weaving them up and down (weft and warp style.) You weave them with this long crochet hook looking thing. Then you tie them off at the end and voila..a potholder. It's all manual.

This is very pretty and a wonderful gesture from your granddaughter as well. I remember doing these too when I was younger, and it was fun. I still crochet Pot holders for others from time to time, and have given some away and sell some of them via the internet and at shows too as well. I feel owning something handmade makes you appreciate it a little more knowing someone took time with their hands to do something.

My kids had a loom like that. In fact, I think there is one in my craft and fabric room right now. My daughter also was going to use yarn on it, as a late teen, but we never finished that project.

That's such a cool skill for her to learn. People just don't teach those things anymore to kids. I wish I knew how to do that.

Oh yes! I remember those! I had one when I was a kid and made quite a few pot holders for my mom and grandmother! They loved them and used them till they wore out. I can imagine your granddaughter is right proud of her work and knowing her grandmother has one made by her. Bless her heart!

No we didn't have the plastic loom to make pot hollders, but my neighbor friend did....and I have helped her many times. I remember it being so cool that she had a bag of the nylon circular strips that you put on the loom....it was sooo cool. We did, however, have the plastic round thingie that you made long round hose like things with yarn. Mom knitt back then, so she always had lots of left over yard we could use. But what was the use of these long circular thingies, besides the cat loving to play with them. LOL

Hi. jillhill. I love the pot holder. It is very beautiful. My mom used to crochete when she was living. My mom has crocheted a brown pillow and some other things. She has also made a ceramic tile pot holder stand. Hot pots and cookware can be placed on these while you have finished cooking in the kitchen. Your granddaughter is a very bright young girl! I know that this made you smile so much. If I made anything for my mother or grandmother when I was young, I can't remember. I know that I would have been very glad to make things for them though. I would love to see them smile. My son and daughter have made me things in school. I try to keep all of the gifts too. Enjoy your gift, you must be very special to your granddaughter.

Hi, jillhill....Well, this certainly brings back memories. When I was a kid, about 9 yrs old, I was introduced to this type of craft. I think my relatives were given a zillion of these potholders that I made and gave away. As I got older, I learned to crochet and transferred those skills to making crocheted potholders, hotpads, washcloths, dishcloths and that interest led into crocheting just about everything thinkable. Today I still do the crochet and have about 4 projects going today. I make a pair of socks in an evening. Crochet is one of my relaxation techniques. And all this resulted from a simple loom with loops and a few potholders. Thanks for the memories.

I never made those, though they were cute and that was so thoughtful and sweet of your granddaughter to give such a unique gift. I never really can make one of those, but I do know how to make cards. Yeah I know, plain and cheap, but it's the little things that makes them sweet and meaningful, that's why I put my heart into it, even if its a little "arts and craft project".

Sadly, I have never made anything like that for my grandparents. In a way, even if I did I am sure my grandparents wouldn't even know what it is. Even though I have never made pot holders, I have knitted scarfs for my mother. These handmade items just spark a nostalgic feeling.
