Trying not to take Tylenol Cold!

I'm seriously trying *NOT* to take Tylenol Cold, although I do have the stuff on hand for my family, alone with children's tylenol, and regular tylenol and advil, but all that stuff is habit-forming. I'm trying to fight a cold, so now I'm drinking a hot "tea" of sorts of grated fresh ginger root, honey, and some lemon juice in hot water. And if we have garlic in the house (which we probably won't until this Thursday when we get paid) I'd cut up fresh garlic cloves and put them into my sandwiches, they say that fresh garlic cloves chewed will do wonders in getting rid of a cold. But.....I was a baaaad, baaaad gurl tonite! I *did* take tylenol cold earlier this evening in oder to get rid of a headache :-p

I would not say you were bad as the pain was screaming. It is okay from time to time as I do it all the time, but only because I am under so much stress and my headaches get way out of control. I have been getting daily headaches and bad migraines since I was eight years old. If I do not take my Excedrin, I cannot function. I do not want to take the doctors prescribed narcotics as I do not want to get addicted. I have tried many countless remedies and they do not seem to do a thing for me.

A magnesium supplement might actually help. I have found that it will help my headaches a lot.

I'm sorry you have to go through that, and I can understand about not wanting to get addicted to narcotics. I'd be pressing my doctor to send me to a specialist, I mean daily headaches can really be stessful in itself :-( I do hope they can find a cause! As for magnesium, I do take a calcium complete supplment to keep my bones strong, or at least prevent as much deteriation as possible, and it has vitamin D and magnesium in it.

All those products only treat the symptoms, but there is nothing wrong with taking them occasionally. You have to know that they do not cure a cold. Your hot "tea" actually will do you more good. It is giving you anti oxidants and antiinflamatories. I have a cold myself. A good hot soup with garlic in it would help too.

Yes, you can get rebound headaches if you take pain relievers too often. Your ginger and garlic are both anti inflammatory. Honey kills bacteria. I really prefer to eat my medicine. I like to have turmeric, and cumin and all kinds of peppers.

My mother in law did say that eating red peppers is really good for you, I must try it.

I do take medicine, even over the counter, when I must or when it provides the best help, but I feel like eating a well seasoned diet helps me avoid taking it so often. In fact, I am glad I came back to this discussion. I keep candied ginger for things like colds and sore throats, but I forget that I have it, because I do not get sick often.

Your hot tea and garlic sandwich are perfect for fighting a cold...maybe some paracetomol for the headache. Chicken soup is good too. Hope you are feeling much better by now.

its good if you don't take it (maybe only at night to help you sleep) because when you blow your nose, you are actually blowing out the germs and by taking a product that dries you up, it doesnt really get rid of the germs.

Hmm, that makes sense, actually, they say all we can do is let a cold or flu run its course, and that's probably part of the reason. Ya, night time is good espcially I want to get to sleep, a dripping nose can be so icky! :x

Hi. Masihi. When I get sick, I try not to take any kind of medicine either. I try to allow the cold to wear off on its own. Or I may drink some hot tea like you are doing too. I love tea, I think it has more healing elements in it than medicine does anyway. If all else fails, I will have no choice but to take me some medicine. I hope that you are feeling so much more better now.

There is nothing wrong with taking these products occcasionally but if you use them too much, I think thaqt they start to lose their effectiveness. Therefore, it is important to use these products in moderation.

Yes, that is true, which is why I want to switch to natural foods/cures instead of chemicals.

You are not going to become addicted to Tylenol Cold just taking it as you need it. You'd have to be using it daily multiple times to do that. Be at peace. If you need it, then by all means, take it. Fortunately, your cold will not last long.

It's not addiction I'm too worried about but my immune system becoming resistant to it or just being habitual. I know that eating Nature's foods are much, much better for you, and while I'm on this planet I want to live a good quality life, and a healthy life, as well. Besides, I love learning nature stuff, anyway :-)
