Hi, I am 26 weeks pregnant. Recently I noticed that my urine is like a noodle soup color or like a yellow crayon and has a foul smell. I don't know yet if my UTI is cured already coz I haven't visited my OB for a month. Though I already taken antibiotics for a week and stopped coz I feel like I'm okay my abdomen doesn't hurt anymore.
What do you think is the cause? Is it really normal to pregnant women to have a foul smelling urine?

Hi ceres, all the advice that you got here is very relevant and you should never take a urinary tract infection lightly, even when you are not pregnant. It can lead to kidney disease which may not be detected until you have severe kidney damage. The course of antibiotics that you got should have been completed and not stopped because you felt better. What you did was partially destroy the bacteria causing the infection and then they recuperated once you discontinued the antibiotics. Go and see your doctor immediately like yesterday! Drink lots of fluids including Cranberry juice, (100% juice), you can also have dried cranberries or any other cranberry product. Cranberry prevents the bacteria from sticking to the walls of the urinary bladder and allows your system to flush them out faster. Its some time since you posted so I hope that you have been to see your doctor already. Please follow all the instructions that you got and if the medication that you get does not clear it up after you have completed the course, go back to your doctor even before your next appointment. Kidney disease during a pregnancy is not advisable at all!
I am not trying to frighten you, just to impress on you the importance of not treating your symptoms lightly.
On a happier note, Congratulations! I hope you have a beautiful, healthy baby and your labour will be a short one!

Perhaps you should wash the chamber pot with bleach to remove any bacteria that would cause the urine to smell after sitting in it for a while. If after that it still smells well its not the chambers fault. You should be taking your maternal vitamins and minerals and your doctor should have recommended treatment for the anaemia, you don't have much time left to correct that and it can cause complications during labour if you are anaemic. If you get tired and dizzy from walking how will you get through several hours of hard labour? Have you mentioned this to your doctor?. Its very important that he/she knows this. You say you only drink 2-4 glasses of water but perhaps you have other fluids? Milk or juice? If you can juice some of the dark green leafy vegetables that are available and have some every day along with your fruits and regular vegetables, (if you cant juice them, just steam and eat a mixture of the different varieties every day). Its important that you have your fruits to provide vit c or you will not absorb the iron. You also need to let your doctor know about the crystals in the urine. The urinalysis will show them up but its still important to mention it.
Still make an effort to find the cranberry, its really very good with urinary problems.

well thank you... I wonder if I can find cranberry juice here in the philippines. I am in my 6th month now, going 7. Hope labor dont hurt that much =D. Thanks for the advice. I wasnt paying a visit to my ob about a month now, I got anemia and if I go out and walk long I get tired and dizzy. I dont know if the smell of my urine is cause by bacteria in the chamber pot. When I pee it doesnt really smell bad, but when stayed too long in the chamber pots it really smell fishy and notice there are these "sugar-like particles floating". I can only drink 2-4 glasses of water a day.. T_T

Congrats on your pregnancy, it could be a urinary tract infection. So it would be best and advisable if you see your obgyn, as maybe it isn't but foul smelling urine is not normal.
If it is UTI very treatable and common for some women during pregnancy. Best of luck and I should add that if it is, it will not go away on it's own as burning, itching and irritation will be the following symptoms.
Best to you with your pregnancy.

Sweetie you can not have UTI the entire pregnancy as it will interfere with the pregnancy and cause a load of issues with the baby. If it is UTI it will get worse as a lot of discharge and really bad foul smell each time you urinate. It will cause a lot of burning when you urinate.
You will need an antibiotic and your OBGYN will know what is completely safe during pregnancy. Do not worry like you caught something. Not at all, this is common during pregnancy. Not every woman gets it but a lot do. It has to do with the Urethra cleaning it self and sometimes it gets into the urinary area.
It would be best to contact your doctor and with a few day it will be gone. Please do that as it can get very irritating and uncomfortable.
I do not want to scare you in any way, simply best to be safe then sorry later. Best of luck and I wish you a wonderful pregnancy and happy blessed baby!

You can't take the meds that are left over, you will have to take a complete course from scratch again.

I remember when I was pregnant, my urine was smelly as well... I remember I asked my midwife but I forgot what she said. I only remember to drink tones of water all the time.

i strongly suggest you visit your OB because she's the best person that can give you advice regarding your concern but i sugeest wether your UTI is cured or not, drink lots and lots and lots of water and cranberry juice, you can also try coconut water and I know everything will be okay... just see the doctor as soon as possible and pee and when you have to pee, this helps washing your urinary tract off of germs or any unhelpful organisms...

In my pregnancies I got a bottle from my GP and gave a sample of my urine to my midwife for testing. One time she found protein in my urine and that got her concerned. She therefore sent me to hospital for extra testing. I think that you should speak to your midwife as soon as possible. Then she will be able to see why you have foul smelling urine. It might be a side affect of the antibiotics you had when you had a urinary infection. Good luck to you finding out about your problem.

i think it was just normal because i have heard also about it from my wife when she was pregnant then she also has something like that but doesnt feel anything abnormal...but its much better if you try to consult your ob-gyne just to make sure...

Hey ceres32, firstly congratulations on being pregnant you will be enjoying the feeling of being a mother in a few weeks. This is a great feeling for any one. As for the problem you are facing I must request you to take no chances and visit a doctor as fast as possible. I know many who took this kind of signs lightly and then had to suffer. Don't be scared and get to your gynecologist as soon as possible. Plz don't take any chances. Even if many ladies will say that they had such experience and its nothing to worry but still you should not take any chance as it may not be the same with every lady. So its in your own well being that you go to the expert and get a check up. Prevention is better than cure..take care

Hi, please see your OB again. Pregnant women are more prone to infections. And do not by any chance take certain medications w/c arent prescribed by your OB, it might affect your baby in anyway. So the best advice would be go and visit your doctor, better to be sure than sorry. Good luck! :)

I also don't have UTI before until I got pregnant in my first baby and I got UTI. My grandmother told me that pregnant women are prone to UTI and its normal but you have to remove your UTI. Medicines that prescribed by your OB can help and also drink water from coconut because water from it can help to cleanse our body specially our kidney and it is also good for you and to your baby. Just avoid eating too much junk foods, soft drinks, and salty foods. Happy Mylotting
