Two weeks ago, my son was constipated for 5 days then I finally took him to the pediatrican, he siad it is very normal for a breastfed baby to be constipated and I introduced him some rice cereal since he has turned 4 months old so he needs some time to adjust. As soon as we came home from the pediatrican, he finally went...(go figure) The doc said I could give him some prune juice or apple juice that should help. And he is doing it again, it's been 5 days and he still hasn't gone yet, I'm hoping he's gonna go soon... Have you ever had experience like this with you children??

Both my daughters are very prone to constipation. If not downright constipation, hard poo that needs lots of pushing. I am quite used to it. I would be worried sick if they haven't gone for 5 days!!!! I worry a lot if they don't go for one or two days. Give your son Fibre rich foods such as wheat bread, fruits, etc. Fibre is the best medication for constipation. Lots of water will help. Give him plenty of water. Good Luck.

Yes, my doctor told me that too. That constipation is very common in babies, especially when changing over to solid food. My mother said I used to go once in a week when I was a baby!! Don't worry too much about it unless he has a problem.

We did have a problem with our daughter. She was in so much pain from the constipation. we finally had to get suppositories and use a small piece and lay her on her back on the floor on a towel covered with a towel and rub her belly. She went, she was a mess to clean up but it worked. Apple juice will encourage bowels to move though. The above was just an extreme incident.

My daughter had the same problem. It got worse as she got older and I was potty training her. The Dr. had me dive her prune juice, change her diet, give her enema's, and at one point I was giving her Fletcher's Castoria. It was a child's laxative. I finally had one Dr. that had her have some x-rays and he found out that had a problem with her lower intestine. I for get what it was called, but it's where the larger intestines meet the lower intestines and there is a ditch that is caused because the intestines haven't completely formed or met. He said to make sure that there was plenty of fiber in her diet, water, no dairy, nothing that will constipate her or cause her gas. He said that she will eventually grow out of it. The intestines did eventually meet. She went through the problem until she was about 5-6 years old, but after awhile everything seemed normal. It's something that usually happens to premeemies. She was a early baby. DCMerkle

Give him more water. How much water does he take a day? Our son doesn't go up to 5 days. I think the most is 3 if not mistaken. Cereal does help. He takes brown rice cereal & also we've just bought him something with prune flavour too. It's very hot & humid here so we make sure he gets enough water, not just milk.

Hi, So far my son never experience any constipation before and all the time I gave him eat lot of fruits and also eat prunes when he reached 1 years old. Of course, only 1 prune per day. Since doctor recommended prune juice, you can try it out and hope it works for your son. Give him small amount of banana or papaya and see whether it works on him or not. It is not good to have constipation at young ages too.

I am not sure too if fruits would be okay for a 4-month old baby, he might not be able to digest it yet. o_0

Oh,I will be a father soon.In china, especially in countryside, people feeding their child more depends on experience than depends on pediatrican.I let my wife live together with my parents to get good looking after.Because many pediatrican have not a little professional ethics. So I suggest you to ask some old people when your kid feel unfitting and is not ill.you can get better advice frome old people than from some pediatrican.

I have asked my mom, she said that's not right but the pdiatrician says it is very common for them to do this... so I'm torn apart.

Yes I have. I agree try to give him some prune juice or apple juice in a very small amount like a tea spoon or so and see how it goes. I used to dilute the apple juice and add a dash of prune juice to keep them going and not too much or they'd have the runs.

He doesn't like prune juice so I do apple juice but he still barely drinks it... I keep him 1 - 2 ounces at least I try.

Ivy- Both of my children went through that so I just started them early on solids. They both ate rice around 3 months and started adding in the fruits at around 4 months. I also started with apples and prunes. I would just continue on that. Here is an article that might help you. http://www.drgreene.com/qa/babies-and-constipation Namaste-Anora

Oftentimes we encounter that too, and I just give my sons more water than usual. And that solves the problem.
