In my quest to lessen my expenses, I've started doing things myself, like cooking me meals (Used to eat out. Everyday.), fixing broken things around the house myself, and just this morning, I altered my own pants! And I feel great about it! I'm eating healthier, and I'm saving a lot instead of discarding things or having them serviced by other people. But, the best part is, really, I'm having fun! What are other do-it-yourself activities can we do?

I too do a lot of cooking at home, I try to hunt down coupons as well, so I can accomplish some savings there. I have painted a couple rooms also.
Basically anything unless I need an electrician and or plumber. That I will leave to the experts.

Right. We wouldn't risk getting fried, or making the problem worse, won't we? Oooh, I've also tried painting my room before, and placing the wall paper. That was fun, really!

Hello glory. Yes It does feel good to Save funds. Io have pretty much always cooked at home, I have also mended my clothes and I used to make a lot of them too. But these days it costs more to make them then it does to buy them. I have preserved food in the past too. I have repaired fans, coffee pots, and even my washer and assisted my daughter in repairing her dryer. Being a do it yourselfer is fun.

Well, when you take time to do things yourself like this, you can have Fun while saving $$ in the process. Especially if you are making enough in the way of food to where you have something for left overs if you like them without allowing them to go to waste as well. We try to find ways to do as much as we can, even home repairs by ourself if we can as it can save a lot of $$ and usually time having to call someone in as well.

Yup, it is fun and economical. I also hate having food go to waste, so normally, I try to dress up left overs, like, for rice eaters like us, there are lots of ways to make leftover rice much more interesting like making them into chinese fried rice or my favorite, nasi goreng.

I guess DIY is just not for everyone. But, yeah, there are lots of places to look for crafty ideas. I have seen things beings sold that are made out of beads out of magazines.

It really all depends on how brave you are at trying new things, and what tools you may have on-hand. With a little time and research, and a little bit of courage to try, the average person would be surprised how much money they could save by doing more things themselves. I actually like doing as many projects myself as I can. I have a pretty good selection of tools, though, so there are things I can do for myself that other people may not be able to do, and I don't mind buying more tools that I can use to do more things with. I also like learning to do new things. I change my own oil in my truck, and I do as much other maintenance and repairs on it as I feel comfortable doing, or that I have time to do. I do my own yard-work, and I also do my own appliance repairs when I can. I have several friends and relatives who are knowledgeable in a wide variety of areas, so I have people that I can ask for advice if I need advice about whether or not I should try to do something myself, or whether I should just call a professional.

Most people would be surprised how easy most maintenance and repair tasks are if they would only take a few moments to try to do it themselves.

That is right. When you have tools, DIY would be much more easy and fun. But, the more important thing is the courage to try. Some people say I can't do this, I can't do that, but have not even tried! I believe that things can be learned.

Good for you! Much as I'd like to live a normal life, my erratic work schedule does not allow me to do so (sounds like I'm making excuses here ugh! haha). Anyway, washing and ironing of clothes is another thing I can think of, especially if you love this task :p.
DIY is most applicable for me during travels. It's more convenient and most of the time cheaper I think especially if there are some things in the group tour that you're not interested in.
Let's go for DIY!

Hey, you don't sound like you are making excuses. I am busy too and have an awfully erratic schedule what with two boys under 5 running riot most of the time :) If I had the luxury of time, I would love to sew, create stuff, build up stuff, get real down and dirty organized :) pun, but I mean it. But right now, I do what I can and take some shortcuts where I can.
I too catch up on some work when I am traveling, its an awesome way to keep busy or just get a few minutes of quiet!

I do everything myself that I can and it really does save a lot of money. Kind of like that, when something goes wrong, I try to take my time to think about how to fix it rather than running out and buying a replacement. Case in point: A guitar string lost a small piece that kept it from pulling through the bridge. Since the strings probably needed to be replaced anyway, the logical thing to do would be to buy a new set. Instead, I let it alone for awhile, then one day I picked it up and noticed that one of the higher strings was tied behind the bridge - light bulb moment! I got a pair of needle nose pliers and tied the lower string behind the bridge and I've been using it like that for a few weeks now. It looks and tunes fine. I will wait until I'M ready to replace the strings and I saved a few dollars in the process.

That is so cool! I string my own guitar and violin, but have not come across that kind of situation.I would have naturally bought another string. In your case, you saved some money! Kudos!

Personally doing things like this can be quite rewarding as well as help save a little $$ in the process as well. I know that when you cook meals at home, even if there is only one or two people there we find that we sometimes like to cook extras for another meal, and freeze some of the stuff like homemade Spagetti sauce for other meals as well.
One nice thing is my husband works in Maintenance at a Retirement home so he has learned how to repair a lot of things so in turn this helps with many Repair costs around the house for sure. Sometimes he even is allowed to bring home some of the items they replace that still are good which is a plus for sure.
We also do Recycling, and save our cans and turn them in from time to time for a little extra $$, try and make shopping lists and get our groceries all at once except for the small stuff, and try to find other ways out there to cut back and save where we can. In this day and age for sure every penny saved counts.

Wow, that is good to hear! It's a good thing, indeed, when you acquire skills at work that you can apply at home. It does help a lot especially in cases of emergencies and no one is there to repair your stuff.
Recycling is good. It not only saves money, but it also helps the environment! I really love activities that care for the environment and when I hear of people actually doing things for this cause, I give them commendation!

Hi gloryacam,
A penny saved is a penny earned. So it is very important to save money, even if it is very small amount because over the years this small amounts become big. As for cooking is concerned that is my hobby too. ALso i like to eat freshly prepared food , so there is no better thing than to cook yourself. It is not only cheaper but you also know what spices and oils and quality of ingeadients like floor, vegetable and meat. Also you can make to your taste. So i like to cook as much as possible.

You are so right, my friend! I need to save, too, and lessening my expenses helps me increase my savings. Not much, but it will do. Yes, I love to cook, too and it's really fun to do, and the food tastes better, too, because as you said you can make it to your taste.

That's right. It helps so much in budgeting our money. Yup, and you do get to appreciate these tasks especially if you're one who was born not really doing these things but having them done for you.

It really does depend on what your abilities are. For example, my husband used to work in a mechanic's shop when he was younger so he has learned a lot about working on cars. For that reason, we've had our 2003 Honda Civic since it was brand new and the only times that we've ever had it in the shop were the two times that it was involved in an accident, so it was body work. He does the oil changes and all of the other routine maintenence is done at home. In addition to that, we bought a house three years ago that is a fixer upper and since then we've been doing home projects ourselves, we gutted and refinished the bathroom and the next project is to do the kitchen.

Wow, that is so great. Yes, special abilities and skills are a plus at DIY projects. Well, for me, the reason I can mend my own clothes and prepare my own meals is because I really liked Home Economics class back in HS. I didn't know that it would be of help to me later. It's nice doing things around your house, because when you have guests, you can say, oh, and I made these.

Yes that's true my friend.. doing a lot of things on your own helps you feel much better but the thing is you should make this as a habit and not get bugged over a period of time... I do my own cooking, I iron my clothes and sometimes I wash the tiny little ones like my scarf, shirts as such, I clean my room everyday, water the plans and so on.. its a good exercise and a feel good factor as well..

Right! It is a good exercise, really! Well, I'm moving towards doing my own laundry because I just need to squeeze it somewhere in my schedule. I know I'll manage to. I iron my clothes, too. Can't risk them burning holes into my clothes.

Hi my friend,
Do it by myself is good and it make us feel more fun. However, if we can do it with an other person, it will be more happy.
I used to live alone, I did every thing by myself. I feel fun. But I sometimes still feel sad. Then, I move to live with my friend. We did everything together. I realize that this give me a couple happiness.

In my case, it's different. I live with a friend, and then she's no longer constantly around because she needs to be somewhere else. Now I find living alone much better for me.
