What does Poke Someone mean?

Yes, believe or not I just joined facebook last week, my friends finally convinced me to do it. So as I was getting everything together on it I saw that I could poke people. So I poked a few people and now some of them are avoiding me like the plague. What does poking mean? I thought it just meant something like an innocent hi. I searched online and there are lots of different answers, I really hope it isn't some of the worse ones. So what does it mean?

I did not understand what poking means too, but I guess it is an informal way of greeting someone or trying to instigate interaction on this social networking site. I don't use it either. And haven't even realized that many people have started poking me already. LOL

Really? that is an absurd way to interpret that. BUt if that is, then I am glad I haven't got around into poking people on facebook.
