Too much abbreviated words in discussions on Mylot

I read discussions on Mylot everyday. I have realized that there are too much abbreviated words in discussions.
It's difficult for me because I sometimes can't understand them. English is my second language, so I can't know all words. With abbreviated words, I can't use translator tools or dictionaries too.
I think that we shouldn't write abbreviated works in discussions here. Because we're from many difference countries. And English maybe is not good enough to understand all words. English should be written following traditionally.
How do you think about this issue?

There is a good way to discourage people using cellphone messaging "Txtspk" and unnecessary abbreviations on Mylot-and that is,not to respond to their discussions!
For the most part,I'll write in plain English, but there are times when I will use an abbreviation..for example,I'd sometimes use "OTOH" or "IMO" (On The Other Hand, and In My Opinion!) Admittedly,I'd probably get paid better if I was more verbose in my discussions, but at the same time,I don't want to bore people with long winding discussions,either..

Hi tkonlinevn, I agree with you. Though I may be a little guilty too. I sometimes used abbreviated words like IMO for In my opinion, etc. I don't normally use abbreviated.
Like the previous responder mentioned, some people are used to texting. So even when they type, everything is 'Texting Language'. I noticed that some abbreviated words used are another word having completely different meaning!

My younger sister usually write a strange language to her close friends. This language including of abbreviated words and slang. I can't understand it. I think that there are only my younger sister and her friends can know it.
When she write to me, she use normal language. This is logical. But we shouldn't do this if we write to many people.

I agree with you, English is hard enough to understand without people doing what I call "text speech". I do not know all the abbreviations and English is my mother tongue. What many MyLotters seem to not understand is that the quality of your discussion affects your earning and how people respond to it. If a topic is not important enough to be thoroughly spelled out then it is probably not a great discussion any way. I tend to not respond to discussions that are so chopped up. It makes me feel impatient to even read them.

I also agree and only suspect that characters also account for the earnings. It does cause me to be inpatient especially if I am not aware of what the abbreviation is.

Maybe you're right. But we're here not only income but also sharing, right? I hope that I can read many discussions without slang and abbreviated words

Hey tkonlinevn,
Humming.. I never really come across abbreviated words a lot sort of rare for me if not maybe because english is my first language I just can understand it right away. You are right if everyone just types in traditional English then it would make it a little esker for the people that are learning English and have English as a second language.
I AGREE Got my Vote
Me: I don't think I ever really type in abbreviated words I try my best to keep it traditional English since some people text a lot they can't help themselves but to abbreviate words to a simple Lessing typing way. Remember with testing you have a box with a limit of 160 words on most phones some phones allow you to have pages but, that's off subject. I think that's just the main reason why.
By the way your English is excellent

Hi Payout,
Thank you for your kind!
English is my second language. And I always try to learn more and more because I'm not excellent in it. I don't like to write abbreviated words even with my native language. I think that full words are the best when we study any languages.

Hi tk,
You're right, abbreviations should not be used liberally here. I, myself is guilty of that when I type HDD instead of "hard disk drive," MS-OS instead of Microsoft operating system," apps instead of "applications," UV when I mean "ultraviolet" and many others I can no longer remember. I feel I'm ignoring the suggestion "Please be as descriptive as possible."
Sorry for the inconvenience.

I think what you have mentioned here are mostly universally accepted abbreviation. No one really say Hard Disk Drive or Microsoft Operating System or Ultra-Violet, do they? Those abbreviations can be searched on any search engine and the search engine do recognise those.

I agree with Zralte. We mention to an issue in order that we can have an optimistic ways to solve it. I can search HDD or MS-OS etc... on search engines and dictionaries. But I can find 'yr bfr' etc...on them.

I stopped abbreviating words years ago, the only two words I abbreviate are lol and lmao. Other then that I stopped, it's stupid to be honest with people that still do it. People try making there own words a lot by abbreviating and it gets real annoying.

I don't normally come across the discussions that use abbreviation. I think the newbies usuaaly use the abbrevation, not so much the old mylot users from all I seen. I don't like to write discussions in abbreviation either or in my resonses for that matter, I find it irritating. I used to send text message in the short form but I have got rid of this habit long time ago.
Your English is excellent

Sometimes abbreviated words can lose their meaning and the effort becomes lost. Sometimes wriiting out the entire words makes more common sense. Getting in a hurry to get the words out can defeat our purpose of using them in the first place.

I agree. Some of the discussions are hard enough to understand, without using abbreviations. English is my first language, but I know for a lot of Mylotters it is not. How will they learn English if they don't use the right words? Like you said the words can't even be looked up in a dictionary. If they don't learn the langauge then some of the discussions will always be hard to understand and respond to.

That's right. Slang and abbreviations are always challenge with learning English persons. So, we need full English words here, place for all people over the world.

I don't use abbreviations because I don't know about them. I am not a native English speaker and it's quite difficult for me to even understand when I see such shortened words. But usually I understand them from the context.
I don't think it is a good idea to use them (I mean, for those who do this) because it is not a polite thing to do regarding the people who do their best to write correctly in English.

i have also experienced interacting in discussions full of abbreviated words. the internet allowed us to do it. the way to overcome this situation is to ask the meaning of it from the poster. that's the way i do when i am in doubt.

English is my first language, and I completely refuse to use abbreviations at all. I think they are useless and detract from the beauty of language. And, as you said, many people on MyLot are not native English speakers, and abbreviations only serve to confuse you and others who speak English as a 2nd language and make it harder for those who do not speak English as a first language to understand.

I agree with you as well. I try hard to type everything fully and sometimes even add explanations if I am aware that what I'm talking about isn't widely known outside of North America. I know I greatly appreciate the explanations of people from other cultures when they let me know what they are talking about instead of jumping in discussing some festival I don't know about.
Great idea -- we will all learn more this way!

You are right that people should not keep on posting abbreviated words here on mylot but then too there are many of those which are easily understood like
LOL, an abbreviation for laughing out loud or laugh out loud is a common element of Internet slang
many people understand such abbreviation and many don't all we can do is ask the someone or try search engine to find what it means
it hectic to understand but it helps to type fast another eg: would be
we don' say The National Aeronautics and Space Administration but we use (NASA)
all we can do is search what they means but yeah that's way we use mylot search engine and also learning some new abbreviation
