My mother do smoke since I was a kid, maybe because it is the only way she can cope up with the stresses she encountered. But as time passes by, I can see the effect of smoking on her health. She started to have cough, and we really do encourage her to stop smoking but not abruptly. I witness her trying, But still she continues smoking, I wonder why she can not stop smoking.

It is really hard to do stop especially when you have been accustomed to doing the thing. But it may still happen, she can still do it with your support. You and your other siblings should show her that you have her support no matter what the effects of stopping it is. Show her you love her and that you don't want anything else bad to happen to her if she doesn't stop.

If you yourself have never smoked, you will never understand ow addictive it is and how very hard it is to quit--especially if the person started smoking at a young age. I was 15 when I started. I have tried a few times, sometimes lasting a few days--sometimes only part of a day. My longest quit was for about 4 weeks. I have a love it/hate it attitude about my smoking. But I really do need to try to quit again.

Like any form of addiction it is certainly an addiction to nicotine. I am sure she would love to say one day I am done and be done with it forever. Unfortunately she is addicted to it and simply can't. Some people actually have the will to completely stop on their own.
While some people feel that they cannot so seek some help to do so. She may want to contact her physician because there are some medication treatments that have help some to completely stop the habit.
I wish her well with this.
