Half a screen

I have an old (I.e over 2 years old) laptop computer here which works fine but only displays half the screen. This make using it quite frustrating as I get the top of the page but not the bottom. A new screen will cost about £150 fitted whereas a new laptop is about £900. So why do I find myself drawn to the idea of the more expensive computer than the straightforward screen change. Do you find yourself buying the pricier option or do you resist temptation?

Do you have any form of insurance that might cover it if it were 'damaged'?
If so could you make a claim for at least part of the price of the new one?

Hi P1key,
For me it will be a scrren change which is cheaper, if there is nothing wrong the laptop, it can go on for much longer time, but buying a new one for £900s? wish I had that kind of money, lol! hugs.

I had this choice last year, a new battery for a perfectly good laptop or a new one. I chose to buy a new one, I don't know why, I just liked the look of it.

There are new advances in laptop technology all the time that would probably make a new one more enjoyable. I would do something good for yourself and just go ahead and buy a new laptop... it will last even longer and the laptop may quit with in a couple more years any way so you will be ahead of the game!

Okay p1key
I could not do the halfer in anything, lol I have to do the full screen that would drive me bananas. If the screen is the only issue and the entire pc is fine I think I would purchase a new one.
I tend to go for the best in value, in others words quality and price have to coincide.

Only if I can afford it. This time around, I got a much much cheaper, and lower quality computer than I would have liked, but I needed a computer NOW, and could not afford to wait and save up for one I really wanted. The thing I'd like on this one would be a bigger hard drive, which I can always buy at a later date.

Hello!!! buying a new laptop may be a pricier option but even then go get it, if you keep a new screen for you laptop then its not sure that it will work like a new one for some more time, because if we change any of the parts (like screen, sound system etc) in electronics, the new ones never last long and even they'll reach the purpose...Think of it again.

I am sometimes tempted by a pricier option but ultimately I go with the cheapest, most effective or best quality so it will last longer. That's strange that it crapped out after only two years. Does it have a warranty?
For instance, I'm so tired of doing dishes by hand. I looked up dishwashers of all sorts--countertop, portable that you can move around and installed. The lowest price I found was $179!! I'll wash them up by hand, thank you..those prices are ridiculous! On the other hand, it would improve my kitchen and probably raise the value of my house somewhat..what a perplexing decision!
Check on the warranty for the screen and well as the laptop and see if you have some recourse. I would choose the screen replacement, not the new laptop, unless the new one has some latest stuff that you truly need.

hi pikey sometimes the pricier one is the best bargain in the long run as it gives uou better preformance than el cheapo. My son gave me a new led slim monitor about four or five years agon and I just love it as the screen is bigger than my aged bulky monitor get am led monitor as they are not all that expensive and light you can move it with one hand and the screen is so clear. I have a Samsung and its terrrificl now the story of my c omputer is wild this is umpteen years old but was free as my son was working for some y oung men building exercise quipement putting in the electronic components. they up graded their computer system so when they were tossing out computers they told my son he could have two of them free. since then my son has replaced all the various parts so it works much like a new computer except I still woe is me have windows 2000
on my computer. money holds me back from upgrading to windows 7 or the other leading program. Are laptops really thagt expensive? of course my son Robbie bought a used one so he got a break.

Hi, Fishy - have you check on ebay? That's where my daughter got the parts for my old laptop and where she got my new laptop. Decent prices. Granted, that's prices in the US vs prices in the UK, but I don't see that the concept would be dramatically different. She got my current laptop (minus the battery) for $119 (about £220). She then got the battery on ebay as well. It might take some looking, but if you have someone that can install the monitor, I'm sure you could get a good deal. However, I think you're concerned that if one part broke down now, another might break down after you replace the first part. Totally understandable. Are there places you can take it who will look it over for you for nothing or a small amount to make sure nothing else on it is going bad?

Hi pIke, I shall not go to such big expenditure. I shall prefer a new screen. But actually in my case I shall buy a new desktop computer with LC monitor. Though it's not portable but you can preserve double document than a laptop. It is less expensive too.

I would usually just go for the complete new option in cases like this as you never know how long the rest of the unit will last. In the past I have replaced half of something or had something repaired only for it to break somewhere else not long after. Sometimes it is just better to bite the bullet and get a new one, particularly when it comes to computers.
I am going through this dilemma right now with my desktop. It is 6 years old, which is pretty ancient for computers and it has seen a lot of use over the years. It is getting really slow. I can either upgrade parts, or replace the whole tower with a more updated version. I was going to upgrade parts, but the more I think about it, the more I think I am going to lean towards the new option.
I just have to wait until we can afford it now!

Half of a screen would cause me to lose my mind to be honest with you. I need full visibility on my screen. Not to mention the fact that depending on the size of your screen, half of it would not be that much. Of course, once half of the screen is blacked out, then the other half is potentially only just a step away from doing so as well. Then again, having never used a laptop, I would have no idea really and have never had that problem.
As for the pricier option, just because it costs more, does not mean that is really better. You could be unfortunate enough to get some model that really does burn out rather quickly. Still, I can see how frustration something like that would be, as I said, I would lose my mind with half of a screen, or even three fourths of a screen. I like my full visibility.

Gosh, that's a very expensive laptop fishy. I would have to take the replace screen option as it's the most affordable. That's the most sensible option too as there is nothing else wrong with the computer.
The thing is, I will not go towards the more expensive item because that means that there are more expensive things to go wrong with it.
I also prefer gadgets and gizmos without all the bells and whistles. Purely simple/basic function is my style and all I require.
