http://www.wyff4.com/irresistible/27105425/detail.html She's only known as LK with little other information known about her except she has ovarian cancer. From reading about her situation, I agree that she might have mental issues...yet this is NOT the first I've heard of this type of situation. Our laws state that a woman's body belongs to her & therefore she has the right to have an abortion. Yet this woman who has ovarian cancer is NOT being allowed to control her own body by choosing to NOT have a radical hysterectomy. She wants a child so bad that she's convinced herself that God has cured her cancer. Even if she still has cancer, should it not be HER decision how to treat or NOT treat her own body??? I would probably want to go for the treatment to save myself, but I know I wouldn't want the government stepping to force me to have a treatment that I feel is NOT good for me!!! Who knows, maybe in her belief that God has cured her, she may well be cured!!! What are your thoughts on this woman possibly being forced into a hysterectomy that she doesn't believe is good for her???

This is a tough one! I don't think she should be forced to have treatment, that her body is hers, but I also don't think people should kill their babies. I would say that people should do what they want unless another life would be affected by their decision. But that's just my ideal scenario--if we start telling people what they can and can't do, pretty soon they'll be able to pass laws that prevent us from eating ice cream or skydiving.

I only mentioned abortion in the title because it is legal to have an abortion & the argument was that a woman has the right to control her own body; but this woman is being told she has to forget having a baby & because she doesn't feel an immediate hysterectomy is best for her & the unborn child she plans to have, that she has to lose the right to control her own body. I understand that it's not a viable child yet. I also understand that she will NEVER be able to get pregnant if she listens to this doctor. I feel that if she is willing to risk her own life in the hopes of delivering her baby, that should be her right. I don't think that the fact that she feels God has healed her makes her mentally ill!!! Pastors/Preachers are considered to be very sane when they talk to God & He answers!!! I just don't think the courts nor our government should have the right to tell this woman that she MUST have the hysterectomy!!!

Well, ultimately, your body is yours. In the end, all your decisions will always be yours, it's because of rules that's why you can't decide for yourself. I also wouldn't want any treatment I don't feel is necessary but if an expert says that I need those, I'll ask for an explanation why and if it's good enough for me then I'll take it. If it's not then I'll do whatever it takes to avoid it.

OK, you've determined that what the expert recommends is NOT the best thing for you & you don't want to have it done. The expert claims you're crazy & you end up in court with the judge saying you're incompetent to make such a decision. What would you do???

In my understanding this woman was not adjudicated as mentally incompetent. She had a temporary guardian assigned to make her medical decisions. Her lawyer says that she understands the diagnosis and the consequences of having or not having treatment. The way the article is written, it looks like she is being railroaded into having surgery. I think she wants to have a child (and her husband has agreed) and then have the hysterectomy. If she truly isn't bonkers and is competent then the doctors and nurses and judges which seem bent on making her agree to surgery, should just back off and let her be. Not enough information given tho for me to be more definite. No age given, no recent history of her behavior in other fields, no reasons given for these people to be lined up against her wishes.

I'm seeing more & more a trend growing where people are being declared mentally incompetent when the court system wants to force them to do something that there is NO law that will put them in jail!!! When I was working in DC, 2 mentally challenged adults got married & the wife got pregnant. The courts tried to remove the baby from the home because the 2 parents involved could not possibly be fit parents as they couldn't teach the child the basic rules of life. One of those radical groups got involved & in the end the child got to remain in the home. This child made straight A's all the way through school & even had perfect attendance!!! He worked hard & sent himself to college. He said that any time he tried to lay out of school, his Mom would insist that his education was important & make him go to school that day. There are times I feel our judges should be declared mentally incompetent!!!!

abortion is legal? ohhh---as far as I am concerned it's not in the eyes of God and in the eyes of our Human Laws. That woman has the right to refuse if thats her decision, she knows how she feels. But anyways, i don't have any idea regarding your Law, may be it depends on the situation. I am reffering to our Law that each and every one of us has the right to refuse when it comes to medications.

It seems we have many rights here, but not the right to refuse medications & procedures that we don't believe in!!!
