here in philippines we have ripe mangoes, but friend in india said, they have very small raw green mangoes being sold in the market right now and this they will offer to hindu gods and goddesses along with other fruits and flowers on HOLI, the festival of colors. i wish could celebrate holi, we don't have any such colorful "wet" festivals in our country. people get painted and colors diluted in water and poured on people. i imagine it is so much fun.
what about your place. can you please share?

Sweety
It is a must in the holi puja, people will buy at any cost..
My last holi was in 1968, never played after that..
On this years holi, some students came applied 'gulal' on my forehead, touched my feet
my wife and daughter in laws, my sons, even Subhee did..
I could feel your presense in our family..
Thanks for this discussion.
Cheers.
God bless you, have a nice day ahead.

thank you professor.
you and your family feels like mine too.
some rituals and greetings for an elderly are being practiced and it is very very nice to know. culture is healthy and it remains there and not lost in time.
have a very nice day.

Hi ann, In India we have nearly 100+ varieties of mangoes and right now, the small pickle mangoes are out in the market. In another week or two the markets will be flooded with every variety of mango .As for holi, it is mostly celebrated in the northern parts of India, so here at Mangalore where I live which is in the southern part of India, there is hardly any celebration. But, I love the festival, we used to play holi while in college and get completely covered with colors...it used to be a lot of fun

hi kiran,
am sure when the mango season comes, you will be doing lots of preserves. it is so nice to know you have had that kind of celebrating during your college days.
it sure is fun to imagine.
have a nice day.

Anny dear
You are aware of our celebration, we will celebrate this festival tomorrow, for the holi puja i got small raw mangos with great difficulty, paid five rupees for three mangoes just half inch big!!
Wish you come here once, i will drench you with red color water to which i add rose water.
god bless you
HAPPY HOLI

this sounds really fun i'd love to join in a celebration like this one here in england we are not as traditional as other counties which is a shame as we have lost a lot of our old cultures

hi aquariand,
it really sounds so much fun like going back to being children and just enjoying and having a great time!
i just hope everyone is a participant you know.. there are people in india who might feel like they need to work and leave the fun to others and they get pissed off being drenched in color.
but indians are so full of cultures and they have preserved theirs up to the present.

hi there,
in the city where i am right now, we celebrate Dinagyang , i am sure you have heard about that? :) and in my hometown, we celebrate Pintados. yeah i think i have heard about this festival in India and now as far as i know, i haven't heard of any festivals here where people get wet or splashed by water or do anything with water. i wish we had that too, it is indeed going to be so much fun

hi cherish,
dinagyang is a festival honoring the christianization of the natives and mostly i see are colorful costumes and street dances.
we have a festival where splashing of water is there too (but no colors).. we call the "san juan".
but the indians do it with color. it must be something very different. dont you think?
