suki has a cough!

Our mutt suki sounds like she has a cough. We often find her coughing up loud and when I try to listen to her she seems like she has labored breathing. We know that she has somewhat of an ashtma as a puppy and it is usually triggered when she is excited (at least that's what we think it is!).
She does not eat the usual stuff anymore, she has become picky, and if she does not like what is served to her she will ignore the food. She only drinks milk and asks for bread! Trace of tears are showing at the sides of her eyes giving her a really ill look. She has lost weight of which I can tell because she used to have this big bulging tummy and healthy coat.
I whispered to her ear that she should not feel sad and depressed because I already am and I want her to be alive and healthy again.
Then we've noticed a progress this evening. At dinnertime, she asked for my father to feed her and we were delighted. She also went out of her sleeping area to be with the other two dogs. Though she is not back to her usual self, at least she was not sleeping the whole day today. I just wish she will be back in her usual shape because we tend to worry when one of our dogs are not feeling well.
She still coughs though from time to time.

It sounds like she has been sick since she has a cough and not been eating as she usually does. She needs to drink water no matter what. Water will flush whatever ever is in her system out and she needs this to be done. Drinking milk is okay but she really needs water everyday.
I'd try boiling or baking some chicken for her. This is good for her when she is sick and even when she is not. It will help to put the weight back on but you don't want too much weight on her. She needs to be slim but fit. Ask the vet or do a search online and find out about her breed and see what she should weight.

I forgot to say the milk will also cause her to cough more, it will cause a film in her throat and it coats her throat too and will cause her to cough more.

yes moondancer she has also been drinking lots of water. My father makes it sure that there is fresh water for them everyday. I have seen improvements in her today because she interacts with them now. I do hope she will feel better now.

That's good. I'm sure suki will be fine. If her allergies get to be bad the vet can give her a shot once a month. That will help her. :)

How old is Suki? Is she a puppy, or is she an adult or older dog? Coughing and labored breathing in an adult or older dog (or even in a puppy in extreme cases) can indicate problems such as collapsed trachea or a heart condition. I recommend that you have her seen by your vet.
