Some days ago I asked. Is rice Healthy. Now I want to ask you something related to rice again. Here there is an old saying "Perut bendang" literally translated Paddy field stomach. You will be called "perut bendang" if you are unable to go thought a day without eating rice. People who are "perut bendang" will have difficulty, stomach gas, giddy, uneasiness, clammy hand and many more .... Is natural or is it psychological. Are their mind playing trick on them. Have you ever experience such things.... or are you one of them....

I can go days without rice. As long as I have mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes and peanuts then lots of water. Some might find it hard to go on day without because it has been programmed in their body system to eat rice. Rice is a staple food in my country. However I can teach my body to not to depend too much on it. It's both the within the mind and discipline matters.

So it's just mind over matter. It is still not proven scientifically. some people would agree with you and there are some who would disagree. all in all it falls down to the individual.

Hi noorhizat, I am from Northern India and we produce the best rice in the world by name of Basmati rice , but surprising we north Indians are not much rice eating people and rice is not part of out staple diet , so we donot eat rice daily. As far as i am concerned i like rice a lot but still i have it once or twice a week.

Hi agrim, We have basmati here, I guess the goverment import from your part of the world. We used it to make "beryani rice". They are eaten with either chicken, mutton or beef, you can even have vegetarian version of the rice. This kind of cooking you cannot eat it daily. It is very rich creamy and taste like heaven. Normally I eat this kind of rice at the "mamak restaurant" Indian muslim restaurant.

That is you staple diet. The question is can you go 1 day or more without rice. What will happen if you do not eat rice for a longer time than usual?

I think there are a lot of food that are great sources of carbohydrates. But there are some countries who actually eat rice 3 times a day. It depends on a country's culture I guess. But eating any food will make you survive.

Every country got their own staple diet. We at the Asian side eat rice daily and yes some will eat it 3 times daily, some even more :). We eat to survive, but we can consume other form of food that is available to survive. The question is the kind of people I was talking about do exist and is psychological or natural? Are there people like this in other countries that ate rice as their staple? or is it just here. I do notice that the numbers of people like this is reducing. I thing this is due to the readily availability of alternative food to the younger generation compared to previously.

Hi there! honestly i haven't really thought that there are people who are what you call as "perut bendang". maybe those people who had experienced some symptoms because of not eating rice for the whole day had also not taken any alternative source of carbohydrates. i think it's just psychological because what they had on their mind is that when they don't eat rice they will have difficulty, stomach gas, giddiness, uneasiness and clammy hands. For me, it is okay even if you don't eat rice for the whole day as long as you have eaten other source of carbohydrate like bread and many more.

Same here, I can go many days without rice. It's just some people including a few friend if they did not take rice at least once in one day will have the problem that I said.

What a funny name to call someone lol. I do like rice but I would not want to eat it everyday. My kids cant have rice as it makes them severly constipated so I usually just eat it once in awhile for lunch of dinner while I have made them something else to eat.

I don't eat rice for like 3 months now, I started last December, I eat everything except for rice, but of course I eat with moderation now. I have gained weight since my physician increase my steroids dosage, so I got really frustrated and I told myself that It's high time for me to really lose weight so started dieting. I'm not really a rice eater.

YES. I can finish the day without eating rice. Actually, I tried that for ONE WEEK. I just ate veggies and chicken. I'm missing rice sometimes though, but I managed to finish it until the last day.

Yes my husband has a problem of stomach gas and this is due to more rice now we are eating rice only once in a week. Because previous eating more rice this problem is arise so Dr. was saying eat less rice so this is start. No one can eat rice morning as well as evening rather than chappati only in the exceptional case in Chennai.
