I am so sad at the moment. I made such nice dough for my chocolate chip cookie but as i took it out of the oven the base was burnt and the top half was only slightly brown. I have no clue how to evenly bake cookies..My oven was on the right temperature. Mylotters, do you have any idea about this?

Wrong cookie sheet. I have done that before, because I was using a dark color pan which makes the cookie bootom burns, I use a silver color cookie sheet for baking cookie, it never burns.

Sorry to late in responding to this discussion...HOPE you HAVE NOT burnt anymore cookies. The solution is simple...the rack in your oven is too low....just raise it up to the next notch up. The cookie sheet is too close to the bottom burner...not centered so that it will cook even from top and bottom. NO more burnt cookes....Cheers...and ENJOY!

Good on you!!! Something else I might suggest, is to purchase a inexpensive oven thermometer. Often, your oven can be out by a few degrees, or quite a few degrees. I have to calibrate my oven, when baking...as it gains degrees, the higher I turn it...so the oven thermometer helps me to adjust to the right heat! Another thing to keep in mind, the higher the fat/oil content in your cookies...like shortbread with high butter content..the faster they cook, so you must keep an close eye on the first batch...! Happy Baking!

Hi. sweetme329. You should remove them from the oven when they start to turn light brown. When you do this, then you can place them onto the stove to cool off. They will get softer on their own. I had to do this every time that I bake cookies because when I leave them into the oven any longer than usual, the cookies will be hard when I take them out of the oven. Also make sure that you are using a non stick pan too. I am so sorry that your cookies did not come out correctly. I know how you are feeling, this has happened to me too.

Cookies are so delicious when they come out just right. I have found that I need to make sure of a few things when I'm baking cookies. Make sure that you preheat the oven to the recommended temperature. Line the cookie sheet with parchment paper. If you don't have parchment paper, get some. You'll never be sorry. This way you do not have to prepare the sheet with oil which can get too hot and contribute to the bottom of the cookies being burned. Take the cookies out of the oven just shy of the recommended time in your recipe. I will shave off as much as a minute of the cooking time. The cookies will continue to cook even after you've removed them from the oven. Let cookies set for about 5 minutes before you take them off of the baking sheet. This saves you from having torn and shaggy cookies. I hope these steps help.

I forgot to mention also to place cookie sheet on rack in the middle of the oven.

Thanks for your advice, i definitely like the idea of placing the cookie sheet on rack in the middle of oven. Also, i need to double check the temperature.

I was having that same issue. I set the timer and always watched them the last couple of minutes or so. Just because it says 13-15 minutes doesnt mean anything to me. It helped no more burnt cookies.

I had the same experience before when I was just starting out. Let's see, could be that you placed too much grease on the pan...or the oven could be too hot when you placed the pan inside...hope that helps, sweetme.
