I Love my Daughter but.......

She drives me crazy sometimes. I have just received my Christmas Presents from my in-laws (Yes, very late, but they were worried about International Post/courier, so they waited until someone can come over). It's a Kindle. I love it, since I love reading books, this means I don't have to lug around books when I travel or when I need to go to a hospital or somewhere where waiting is involved. Usually my travel bags are crammed full with two or three books to read on the journey and well, in the hotel (if we are staying in a hotel). My handbag is usually overstuffed with the toys and the food for the kids and my books. With Kindle, I don't have to worry about having enough space to fit 2/3 books anymore! YAY. Don't get me wrong, I still like books better. I read my books when I'm at home, but e-reader like Kindle makes it easier for people on the move (though I can hardly be counted as one, it will serve me nicely when I do have to travel and on our weekly trip to Swimming Pool) My Kindle comes with the Red Leather Cover (bought by my mother-in-law, God bless her, she always knows what I would want, but can't afford). For those of you who owned Kindle, you know the holes provided on the left hand side for the cover to slide in. Very handy, and it is very good for protection. Here is where my daughter comes in with my Kindle ramblings. She is 21 months old, cute as can be, with a devilish streak somewhere. She got hold of my Kindle and prised the kindle apart from the cover. Thereby breaking the thingymajig which locks it to the cover. The down part is all bent, but not broken. The upper one broke and is now stuck inside my kindle, all twisted. I tried to remove it, but it would not budge. So now, I am at a loss what to do with that. Even if I buy a new cover, I cannot use it unless and until I get the thing stuck in the hole. Aaaaaaaarghhhhh, where did she even get the strength!!! To push back the down one to it's original shape, I had to hammer it down (Not the Kindle, the cover)!!!! Thanks for letting me rant. I can't do much with her as she is too young to be punished.

The joys of motherhood, lol.. As for the gift, WOW!! Great in-laws girl. Well she is 21 months old and I see mysd reccomended on how to start on the path to showing her how to take care of certain items. Hey we will never be too old to teach our kids, even mine as grown as they are I still from time to time have to show them the way. Glad the entire kindle was not damaged and that you and mysd learned something new today. There is not a single day on myLot that I don't learn something. In fact I learned yesterday how easy it is to make chicken pot pies. lol As great of a cook that I am, I must admit have never made one before, but am looking forward to it.

It's my mother-in-law...well, they are all great, but she is the greatest among them all. She gets me good stuff every Christmas. I hit a jackpot when it comes to in-laws and well....Christmas Gifts. My laptop is a present from them as well...last year, and I truly did not expect anything this year. Yeah, it's only the cover, which can be replaced easily (as soon as I get this thingy out of the hole ). It was not powering on, and I was so scared that I lost the whole thing....but reset it with a long power press, and it's back on. Like the suggestion from mysD and many other advices that I have read and received from myLot, I have to agree. myLot is a great place to learn and to get advice on any topic.

Hi zralte My suggestion - give the kindle as it is now again to the daughter. Who knows, she may fix it. Why is this my belief - because she unknowingly did something that got it in the present state... so may unknowingly reverse engineer it... But risk factor is high... so beware. Kids are always that way - inquisitive and as they are not much aware of what it takes, their curiosity many a times has negative effects... I would opine that you preserve the piece and later when your daughter is grown up, tell her that she owes you a newer version of this... I am sure you would have a smile sometime later remembering your handing the kindle and her playing with it...

I wonder if I'll live long enough to be a granny....or if I would still be Lotting, provided myLot is still around....or if you and other Lotter friends would still be around.....

That is indeed tempting, thesids. Giving the kindle back to her, I mean. Like you said, the risk is really high, and I don't think I can afford to take that kind of risk. I am of the same opinion. Curious and not really understanding...it must be hard.... Oh, you can bet that I would definitely ask her to buy me a much better one when she is of age that she has her own income.

Hi zralte! You know kids are so innocent that even if they cause so much harm, you cannot help it but smile. I can understand your agony, when she in a way dismantled your Kindle. She could not have imagined in her dreams (if she happens to see any .......lol!) that what kind of deep damage she has done to her mother.. I think, you will have to buy a new one or will have to wait till you can afford to go for a new one. It is good to hear that you are a book worm and freak as far as reading is concerned. I believe 'reading' is one the best hobbies and there is nothing like 'reading' books because reading gives us mental stimulation and mental exercise, which other hobbies cannot. I am also very found of reading books/magazines/newspapers and I enjoy reading newspapers rather than watching the news on TV. Have a nice day! dpk

It is interesting to hear that you would read even with a torch light.. It is good that you can use your Kindle without cover.

Yup, I love reading since I can remember....apparently loves to read even when I was too young that I don't have memory of. My mom loves to tell the story that I always drag around at least one or two book wherever I go. I remember that I used to sneak a torch under a blanket to read secretly after my mother told me to go to sleep .... aaahh... those were the days. I think she does have a dream, my daughter, that is...because sometimes she would laugh out loud or cry out loud in her sleep. As for the kindle, thank god, it is only the cover. The kindle itself is fine, it's just that I can't use the cover anymore, no, scratch that, I can still use it, but it is no longer properly secured.

Kindle - My Amazon Kindle before my daughter broke the cover attachment
You are a dinosaur!!!! I heard about Kindle a long time back and I'm usually among the lasts to hear new things. It is the e-reader from Amazon. Cute little thing. Here's a pic of mine before my daughter did her special thing with it.

Learnt something new today! I guess that here they are not talked about much as the emphasis seems to be more on those for taking pphotos and videos rather than reading. Back to your topic! why is your daughter too young to learn that certain things should be treated with respect? When my son was young it was never too early and I remember several occasions when his father would get cross with me saying that he was too young to understand. I argued that if he was old enough to want to damage something he was also old enough to realise that he could not to everything that he thought he could. I don't read as much as I should and I doubt that I will ever have a Kindle. Will they put libraries out of business?

I do tell her. Give me some pointer as to what method works. I tried all methods I know. I thought of giving her a time-out, but I'm not sure she would understand. Any help is appreciated when it comes to children. Kindle - I personally don't think that they will put libraries or printed books out of business. I still love reading the actual printed book, rather than the e-reader. I like having my own little library as well. So, it is not going to stop me from buying printed books (sadly, I don't know any libraries nearby, I would go to a library if I have one nearby with good range of books).

That is the problem when we had small kid at home. They just couldn't see things and they will try to destroys it. Tell me what did small kid don't destroy. Even their toy doens't last long. Because of this, I still using old fashion phone which only allow me to talk and text. But it is durable. Even after being throw hundreds of times, it still not damage.

Hahaha, that sounds like me. I use very old Nokia. It has taken a lot of abuse over the years. Slide on the floor, thrown, etc. I don't text, so I'm happy as long as I can talk. Books are the worst, torn pages, coloured, you name it. I wouldn't have it any other way though. I know I will miss this time in a few years time.

Speaking about torn book, hehehe... The other day we are going to some bookstore, my son look at mickey book. The book was seal by small tape to prevent people from reading it. Before I know my son force open the book and then I heard the terrible torn pages sound. Oh my God in my mind, the book are torn. Then I have to buy the book. You are right. Before we know our kid will grow up and go to school soon. Then we missing them as being a small kid.

The latest craze is tape, you know, cellotape, brown tape, etc. If I leave it anywhere they can reach, you can bet that the next minute it is going to be all over them and sticking everywhere. As our business is based in our house, we have lots of brown tape lying around. Shopping with them is a nightmare. I don't do it unless I have someone with me. On my own, NO WAY. Not for any money in the world.

Very true. I often thought about how hard and frustrating it must be for younger kids (about 1 to 5 years or may be even broader range). Everything is so new and well, they don't really understand much at that age. Taking the kindle instance, she was just trying to find out what would happen when she separate the kindle from its cover - how would she know that forcefully prising it would break? My husband used to joke about that. Child: Hm....let's find out what will happen if I drop this watch/phone/book, etc into water. Parents: NO. Child: How else am I supposed to find what will happen if you don't let me do it? That sort of thing.

Hi jaiho, she can't even say 'I Love you, mom' yet!! She can say something to the effect, very unclear... I am just glad that she didn't break the kindle itself.
