hi all,
i have to wake up at 4am and be starting around 5a.m. walking. many jeepneys will not be picking up people and passengers on the road. many will be stranded or will not be able to go to the office due to this, hence a deduction on their salaries. the strike is about the continuous price increases that is going on right now. i heard the drivers are demanding for a 10 peso minimum fare.
but everyone is hard up at the moment, no salary increases, no extra income coming in.
how can one justify a nationwide transport strike when only drivers will benefit from it? what is the benefit that will go to the passengers? do you think it is fair?

Dear Anny
I am sure, you could manage to go office in spite of this strike, i am aware of your sincerity in job, if you don't go , work will suffer a lot, your comany will be at a loss, just walk up the distance, but never ask for a lift on somebody's car or bike, why i say so?
Some times the drivers in strike hurt persons moving on bike or cars..
Tell us how you managed?
Thanks for sharing
Happy posting, cheers.
Namastey.

hi kal,
i didnt walk as i thought i would. there were buses commissioned by the city government with police personnel in each bus. but night time was difficult. there were so many stranded commuters and had to wait for buses to be filled before they start delivering people to destination. i was home nearly midnight. after a brief rain.
the night before the strike, (i heard from the news the morning of the strike) there were many vehicles that suffered from burst wheels because in the road, there were scattered pins made from nails to puncture intentionally those who travel on the road.
thanks for your reply.

hi yugasini,
when jeepney fare rises up, everything else around follows (price of commodities) except the salary.
it is not fair, i say, because the drivers just got a fare raised from 7 pesos to 8 pesos a few months ago.
i believe in the new government leaders now who were recently elected. they should clean up their ranks and make the economy go up again. but people should be a little patient. it is very difficult to clear the government of opportunists and thieves but they are getting to that... slowly.
i believe that if people will just work with less complains, there will be achieved more things. we call these people.. "maabilidad" (efficient)
only lazy people will go hungry.
thank you for your opinion. have a nice day.

What? I can't believe that. Is it really nationwide? Wait are we talking about the philippines here? I hope our city will not participate on it! Gosh, 10 pesos is too much. We just had an increase then we will have another one? This is absurd!

Is this really true? Is Cebu part of this? I know you have mentioned nationwide so probably my city is part of this, but I haven't heard anything about this today yet. I do hope we won't be included with this because if so, I will be having a hard time going to the church tomorrow. I don't have work so I don't have to worry of being late, but with others who doesn't have cars, how can they be able to go to work if there will be a strike. I think 10 peso fare is way too high. You are right, there is no salary increase and the prices of everything is even increasing, how can we ever live and eat 3x a day if everything goes up and salary never increases? We all know that being a driver is a hard work and that the gas price is really high, but 10 pesos, my gosh, I'd rather be walking that paying 10 peso fare. That's really too heavy for me.

Sorry for the late response. I have watched the news last week and remembered your discussion, I was off then and had time to watch the news. We were somehow not affected by the strike. There was no news about it at all that day. I really hope they will lower that price of gasoline and diesel so that we, commuters won't have a hard time paying a big amount of fare. I really pray the government will not ask for tax with the gasoline anymore, that will really help lower the price of the gas.

Hi tigeraunt, P10 pesos is too much as minimum fare even here in our place if you ride a tricycle they don't even want to ride you when you are not willing to pay 2 person (P10 per head)when alone. mylotters don't be amazed! those practice is only in the philippines!

hi gelay,
tricycles mostly having no franchise (unlike the jeepney drivers) ask the same fare as the latter and they charge double when you are the only passenger. they call it "pakyaw". grabeh noh? and this is important - they are not even insured. what is going to happen to the passenger in case of accident? they shoulder their own expense. oh my!

well in no way it's fair!
but it's inevitable and a result of bad financial management ...
I really have no idea what I would do if I ever face one of these situations !

Hello Tiger-Aunt,
You just simply can't blame them. The rise of Public Utility Vehicles was done because of Cooperatives and Organizations who have organized a group of Jeepney drivers into making a decent earning while giving service to the passengers before mostly it was dominated by jeepneys. then, came fx and lastly other customized vans and popular vans came in.
Unfortunately, most of them are RUN by Diesel or any kind of gasoline. Unfortunately, unless we popularize Electric Batteries (as power source) and convert every jeepney into one, there will always be Strikes that will affect passengers, thus, disrupts the economy. besides, there's too many PUJ/Colorum drivers to boot already.
They simply don't have a choice.

Wow, I think that is just ridiculous. I don't think it is at all fair because as you say the drivers are getting all the benefits but the passengers are the ones that are suffering. I know that times are hard for everyone now but the drivers should understand that as hard as it is for them sometimes it is even harder for people who use their transportation services. Also asking for the 10 peso minimum fair is a bit extreme as well when they know that most people can not afford it. I mean come on if they are saying they are not making enough money how do they think their passengers will afford to use their services to pay them their salary. Any how thanks for reading the response and what a great topic. Hope this all clears up for you there and that it doesn't go much further than this.
