I am not a choreographer by career but I was in ballet for 12 years and some other things for 6 so I have created my own dances many times over the years! My best suggestion for you is to turn on some music that you like, close your eyes (make sure there is nothing to trip over) and just let it flow. Just start moving to the beat and see what comes.
Some other suggestions- go out and rent some dancing videos but try a style that you have never done. Get some african dancing (they are just awesome!) or even go and watch some capoeira (a fighting style that looks more like dance). Anything to get you out of your norm.
I hope this helps- good luck to you!

Taking classes with new teachers, seeing pro and amateur performances, watching old dance and musical films. YouTube has a lot of stuff on dance.
I love looking at the very old dance styles as it brings something old back again and people think it's new!!

Hi Im Toya I do choreography and dance and give workshops sometimes - well to get inspiration i would think of themes for the class and projects and get the class to think of their own ideas aswell..working with a theme and doing a routine or performance is quite good and helps with imagination - another thing you could do is get the class to use their own short pieces of choreography even if its just a few moves and then create a routine or short piece joining their moves and steps together..hope this helps write back if youre still watching your post if you need more ideas
