What Is Going On With Today's Music?

Hello, my name is Keisha Davis. I am new to this website and this is my first discussion. I'm 24 years old and I grew up mostly in the 90's which was the best decade of music for people in my generation, at leaste I think so. Can anyone please tell me what in God's name is going on with today's music? It seems like after 2005 half of the music gradually went down hill. I for one blame the music industry for allowing these talentless, pitifull excusess of music artist to sign contracts in the first place. I remember when being an artist required real talent. I feel the real macoys aren't getting the credit they diserve, you know the ones that have the talent and the voice. I saw a ton of potential and talent in alot of 90's music. I know it's all about what sells, but what about talent? It should take more than a pretty face and a nice body to get ahead in the music industry. Even what is being played on the radio this decade has gotten cliche and stagnant. It's the same crap; top 40's. It has gotten so lousy that I have invested in an ipod so therefor I can downlaod whatever music I want for free. I've completly given up my radio. I know to change the station, but it's hard to do that when everything on the radio is almost the same. 90's music and radio was so much better. For starter's it was a wider variety. Don't get me wrong, I'm not downing every artist we have today. This generation's music could use some work. I remember when music made sense, and I remember spending hours listening to the radio. That's not happening anymore. Why? because I feel that the music needs to go back to the way it use to be. I don't hate all of today's music, just some.

I grew up a lot in the 90's/2000's (ur 4 years older tan me, nearly 3).... I agree it is the music industry but at the same time music fans are fickle. The Music industry has become so stagnant and commercialised something that really took off in the 80's, and the 90's weren't any better, especially with Grunge, Alt. Rock, Club Music and stuff. The 60's and Seventies were a brilliant period for music especially Rock music but, like you said about Radio, it only really has an interest to what is in the charts and doesnt give a damn about other forms of music especially proper Rock music unless they are specialist Radio stations. Which is why, I dont follow current trends and only listen to bands from 60's like The Beatles and The Who, 70's like Deep Purple and AC/DC and the 80'such as Whitesnake or Dio... I do liksten to the odd 90's band sometimes like Foo Fighters but nothing from modern bands/groups is really interesting.... except for Airbourne....

I like some 60s Pchysedelic rock and 70's rock, too. You have a point about the radio, however. The only stations that haven't sold their soul was specialty stations.

I understand your feelings about this problem. Sometimes I just get bored with the "same ol' same ol,' & just stop listening to current trends. I find that eventually (about 3 to 6 months later) I take a chance, & turn on the radio to listen after enough time has passed, & I joyfully discover that while I was on my sabbatical, something new has arrived, & I feel my spirit reawaken. In the meantime, I make do with music I know I really enjoy on DVDs & tapes I already have. It works for me! No, capitalism doesn't equate with greed. This is just greed. Maggiepie "The difference between the almost-right word & the right word is really a large matter; it's the difference between the lightning-bug & the lightning." ~ Mark Twain

I listen to a ton of my CD's and listen to my ipod untill the battery needs to be charged because of this "gibberish" we call today's mainstream music. LOL

I grew up during WW2 and I've totally given up on what passes for music today. I love to have a catchy tune running around in my head, and to be whistling along as I go about my work. Alas if I wanna whistle I have remember the 40's 50's and 60's. Maybe I'm just too old, but I miss the music of yesteryear!

Not too old - you just know what real music is!

You get it, my friend. I like some 50's and 60's music myself. The older you get you start to have a greater appericiation for the music you use to listen to. A catchy beat is what I look for, too; and of course it has to make sense.

There have been music decades, the 40s,50s,60s,70s,80s and 90s. I doubt you will hear much about 2000 onwards in the future.

I dont know why but the 80's are definitly back. with their dace music and even how people are dressing. only thing that botheres me with everything going 80's these days is how so many movies are comming out in 3D. little annoying. I know how you feel about the music. I used to listen to the radio constintly a few years ago and now I hardly ever listen to it.

Well, I just had to have a bit of a chuckle at this. Every generation thinks the same as this. The thing is, when you are young, or younger in your case, you don't have the experience to form a critical opinion about anything because everything is new and you have no yardstick to measure it against. So you use what you grew up with as your experience base for judging the worth or otherwise of everything that comes later. Not that I'm disagreeing with you but since I've got a much longer perspective on the matter than you do I can see that your complaint could be levelled at most pop music no matter when it was composed.

I agree completely! I am 24 and in the same boat. I hardly ever have the radio on. I have had an ipod for years but I invested in a transmitter so I could play my Ipod in the car so I wouldn't have to worry about the radio at all. There are very few people with real talent who can get on the radio because they don't have the looks or the financial backing. All I care about is the sound and the meaning. Everything seems so...bland. My favorite band (Hanson...and give them another chance. They have come a long way from Mmmbop) have finally gotten back on the radio after more than 10 years. However, I still can't listen for them to come on...I go nuts just listening to some of the popular stuff today. Its horrible and I wish I could find some more music I enjoy...its so hard. I do wish SafetySuit could score some radio time...they deserve to be heard.

I wish alot of these underground artist would get the recongistion they diserve. It's the underground artist who are being ignored because I guess the record companies don't feel they have what it takes to "sell".

i wasn't a music savvy back in the 90s. it's because i was a kid then. about decades later, i became aware of the different genres and get to like some of them. i agree that music today is somewhat stereotypical and none-sense (most of them). even artists today are into good looks and popularity, not by what music they produce/perform. they even get to desecrate classics with their i-don't-know-what revivals and clumsy remakes.

Hello TranquilChaos and welcome to MyLot, To everyone who posts responses at MyLot, I would like to say that I am very proud of the fact that one of my daughters has decided to join me here at MyLot. She grew up in a household that listened to every kind of music from Soft Rock, Pop, Jazz, Gospel and my most favorite Classic R&B. I have to agree with what you said here, I like some of today's music and artists and some of it is just terrible. Welcome to MyLot and I hope you enjoy your stay here, it looks like you are off to a good start with this topic.

I agree with you for the most part. There are bands of today I love. Linkin Park is one of my favorite. But there is so much music that has maybe one line of words and the rest is a repetitive techno beat, or it's about the money and women and it's no brainer thoughtless music. I love the 90's music too. I still listen to my Duran Duran and my Depeche Mode and all. Luckily my kids like that stuff too..Thank you RockBand and Guitar Hero! I totally back you up on this subject. I was starting to think maybe I'm just getting old and don't get it. lol
