oh my g just as we were being served dinner yesterday afternoon, darn the
lights went off. we all just smiled, oh well just be patient, soon be
on again. I thought oh darn now I will have to rest the modem and router.
Little did I know that was the least of the problems. It was Sunday and
nobody who knew how to start the generator was there. oh well some of the
caretakers will know how. not!!So we gathered those of us who could not'use the stairs in the vistors lounge.Six pm, 7 pm no electricity., some of the caretakers begin helping those who could walk up the stairs in the dark. I was shaking,I could not take that chance, I am still recovering from my knee injury.oh well the electricity will soon be on. No!!! 9 pm 10 pm. we got the message. no electricity til 8 am. tomorrow. so by 11pm they found spare rooms for us downstairs and finally by 12 am we wereable to lie down. at 3 the lights came on but they refused to let us use the elevators as they thought it too iffy. I had come out to the vistors lounge and just went in, sat down, had a heavy blanket and we to seep there. was woke at 5 so just gave up. first time we have had a power outage here that lasted that long. Am wondering if I am alone in finding out the electricity you take so for granted went out of you for hours too? I really was scared spitless to try walking up the stairs in the dark on my game leg even with a caregivers help as I have not even climbed stairs yet since my injury. and in the dark and without my walker I just couldn't find the courage to do that.
Also what is your take on a retirement center that had no generator set to go on in an emergency with twenty people in wheel chairs and some in walkers who cou ld not climb stairs in the dark. And no plans for a power outage emergency on a Sunday?

Hey there, Hatley! It sounds like it could be very dangerous for the power to go out in the first place at the retirement center and much more when it didn't come back on for several hours. I'm actually a bit surprised there's no generator for times when that happens. As far as priority goes, I think a retirement center should be just under a hospital because there are so many things that run on electricity that assist in places like that. In other words, someone's life is probably depending on that power in some instances. I don't think it's good for a place like that not to have a generator. I wonder if that's up to code? Also makes me wonder if it has to be inspected every once in a while to make sure it meets the city's, state's, etc. requirements. How old is the building - do you know? Hmmm...that's very interesting.
To answer your other question, I remember the last time I lost power. I was still living at home with my parents. A couple of my five siblings were there along with my parents. I can't remember what we were doing when the power actually went out, but I know we'd just gotten home and weren't expecting the power to go out at all because I don't remember there even being a thunderstorm. Anyhow, the power outage actually had a positive effect because we all found ourselves together at the kitchen table with candles all playing board and card games! It was really, really enjoyable. I couldn't tell you the last time we all did that! It seems like we were always too busy...watching TV, on the computer, playing with various electronics, and so on. We had a nice evening of bonding with family just then. The power outage only lasted about 45 minutes, but I was so disappointed when the power came back on since we were having so much fun! Funny how that worked out, but I remember it like it was yesterday.
I'm sorry to learn that your last power outage experience wasn't as nice.

Hi Hatley, no apology necessary on the time it took to respond. I understand everyone is busy, and a lot of times on myLot we're at the mercy of our email notifications. If they don't come, we're out of the loop. Anyhow, I'm glad the power in your building is back in working order! It's a shame you had to wait an extra six hours aftthe fix to use the elevators, but I'm sure it was a safety precaution. (I'm assuming your room is not on the first floor?) Doesn't sound like it was as fun as our "family night" when your power went out. I definitely agree with you that each family should plan a special time weekly at least where no electronics are allowed. Just think how close families could become. It seems like anymore the parents have no idea what's going on in their kids' lives because no one communicates with each other anymore...unless it's a text message here or there lol! I know that night brought my family miles closer in a span of just 45 short minutes. It wouldn't kill some of these kids to sit down with their parents and families to play a board game or two. There's nothing like some healthy competition to keep things alive! Regarding your situation, everything seemed to be set up for a disaster in the fact that, yes there was a generator, but no one could get it going. That's the problem-solving/troubleshooting part of me...when something bad happens, I try to think of what will solve the issue to ensure it won't happen again. I doubt that problem really would come up too often for you. I'm glad everything is back in working order, though, and certainly hope no one was hurt during the whole ordeal.

no several p eople who were on oxygen called relatives to take them in for the night. half of Garden Grove was powerless all night
while across the street the lights were on. Probably a transformer blew out in the part of the grid out building was one. i was just glad when it was all over as yes I am on the second floor. what to me is bizarre is having people who are wheelchair bound living on the second floor. why not all can walk on the second floor and all wheelchair people on the first floor, that would make more sense but then what old facility ever does anything that really makes sense?

i am so sorry I did not see your response till tonight. we do have a generator here but that weekend night the crew here did not know how to turn the thing on. that was inexcusable for sure. finally at3 am they got the handy man Alonzo out of bed and he had it going in a few minutes but they refused to let us use the elevators until 9 am.I can imagine a family really bonding without the electricity to be on computers and playing board games is fun when you all get Oh enthusiastic for it. more families should take a break with out having the power off and reconnect a little bit. lol lol lol oh this building is at least thirty to forty years old. the electric wires are checked each year and brought up to code.

My oh my! If I'll be in your situation I guess I'd be really upset. I tend to lose my patience in situations like this. Not having a notice for the black out is an inconvenience and then add the fact that there is a working generator that can't be used because the people who are supposed to turn it on is not equipped to operate it. Well, we can't expect people to know everything but when I get really inconvenienced I tend to become unreasonable. However, I noticed that as I grow older I become more patient and understanding with people around me.
I'm not that impulsive anymore as compared to when I'm still in my teens and early twenties. Now that I'm almost over age of thirty I still get mad but usually I keep it just there inside and then I tell my self, "Okay, stay calm. Be cool. Smile. Talk to them nicely." There. I feel better after.
Here in our place we also get a lot of black out. The thing that I hate most is when it is not planned at all and we don't know for how long we need to wait. When I was younger I would usually call the electric company and complain. Now, I deal with the situation more calmly and would just ask for information like the possible time the electricity will be up and running.
I hope that because of what happened they would be more prepared now. Hopefully, they would teach all of the staff there now how to operate that generator. Have a nice day Hatley!

hi lady slipper I think that it w as the weekend and they had the
dumbest of the various people on staff that evening. the president of
the residents had more moxie than the supposed care takers did. he organized a bunch of led flash lights then helped us women to the one bathroom and put two huge led flashlights in there. he was thinking on his feet and they were just panicking . we had ended up sleeping down stairs but they had got the generator working by calling our fix it man. But they would not let us use the elevators til 8 am.

hi ladyslipper yes they had a short power outage and got the generator
going in about thirty minutes, meantime one of the care takers walked down those infernal stairs behind me holding onto the back of my t shirt. she must have thought me an idiot but I was scared of going down those stairs as I was afraid I could fall again but of course i did not but I was still nursing my sore knee too.

Hi Hatley - I hope they learned a lesson with what happened that weekend. Hopefully, all their staffs would be equipped now with knowledge and skills on how to handle this type of situation. Unavoidable circumstances sometimes happen so we should always be prepared not just mentally but also more of emotionally for me. When we start to panic we lose our focus and can't think clearly on what will be the best thing to do when confronted by hard situations.
Have a nice day always!!! :)

I mean in a place like that there should be stand bys for all emergencies someone should be on call 24 hours for that sort of thing
I am glad that you refused to do the stairs as that could have been dangerous

hi fwidman yes if we had all lived on the first floor all would have been fine but most of us that have problems walking are on the second floor. walking up unknown steps, iron industrial steps. spaces between all,in the
dark with only a caretaker with a flashlight and a bad knee that gives way at times scared the living daylights out of me.I am now using a walker as my sense of balance is off and my knee is still sore. and how would I get the walker up there.those who needed oxygen had to call friends or relatives to take them to their homes where there was poser.half of our city was out and power was only restored at 8 am this monring..we have a generator but nobody h ere knew how to turn it on so waited til 3 am then called alonzo to come in and turn it on. they all should have been taught how to do that.

My take on a retirement center with no generator is not good. They should be reported. They are endangering their residents.
They just want your money and know you really have no place to go so why spend the money.
Report them to the nursing home authorities as well as the local authorities.
There is no reason for us elderly persons to put up this kind of treatment.
They are not within code.
I'd report them to who ever will listen..

He came at 3;30 and in five minutew we had power and lights but the nitwits wou ld not let u s use the elevators til 8 am. go figure. a retirement home has a whole different set of rules than a nursing home which is sad as this way they get by with so much crap.

HI Hatley, I am sorry that they didn't use the generator. They need instructions? more than likely it needed fuel too. But, you didn't get the use out of it you should have.
Sounds to me like this place is not a good retirement home.
I would like to think YOu could find another one much better but don't know all the details.
And, I am trying to be good in what I write cuz when I took up for you on mylot I just got a message claiming I attacked that guy...............
Well, it's bout me maybe for me to quit mylot when a person is not allowed to help.

They might get rid of me after this one. But I will stay for a while unless they do that again.

That is a bad experience, most especially during summer when the level in dams get lower that they need to save the water by turning off the electricity, also during typhoons. And so be very observant of your surroundings. Always be prepared with these situations.

It does not seem safe that the NH does not have an emergency generator. One would think that by law they would not be able to run and operate a NH without backup utilities. It has been 5 years since I came home from the NH after breaking my back in 3 places and I am very, very, very careful where I walk as another fall could put me right back in the NH with a new break.

hi whiteheather then you know my great fear of falling again and I was not hurt nearly as bad as you were.oh I fou nd they have a generator
but none of the staff here on Sunday knew a darned thing about how to turn it on and it had not been set to just automatically go on either.in fact this crew did not seem to know how to handle a power outage so our president of us residents did know some good strategies like supplying some light with led flashlights. also when it got really dark in the visitors lounge he assisted us who are on walkers or in wheelchairs to the rest room where he had stuck a huge led flashlight. I know a lot of people here thought I was just being a coward but those who knew me and what I had been through did not. I was so afraid I would fall on those iron steps. they finally did call our maintenance man at three thirty in the morning to start the generator. I also am so careful how and where I walk as I was lucky this time not to break a leg or a hip. So I really do know what you mean, we neither of us need another fall.please be careful so you don't hurt your back again.

of morons finally decided to bed us down in spare rooms downstaris. then around 3 am they did call the maintenance guy who had the generator going and lights on in five minute but we had to wait til 8 am to use the elevators.those on oxygen called family members to take them in over night and thankfully they also had p ower. half the city was without p ower for hours.

Oh that stinks Hatley. The longest we went without electricity was when the remnants of Hurricane Ike came through and we lost power for 4 days..I also think it is scary that a retirement center would not have a generator, but I guess as long as one of the residents is not on oxygen, they don't feel it is necessary. I hope they see that you need this back up, because I know how stairs can really be difficult for some people to use..

It's outrageous! I already have concerns for multilevel retirement centers in case of fire emergency. But, medical emergencies would also come in to play (although, someone in the emergency personnel might be able to operate a generator). I think even a manual cranking system would be better than having nothing available.

Dear Ms Hatley
Well, I was quite surprised and shocked to read out this one. I mean we here always were told (by those who are now in US) that there were No powercuts or failures. And they used to really tell us great stories. And many of us here were what? is that really so? Because here we have more power down time than the power up time not to mention the low voltage supply when it is there.
Reading about the fact that the retirement center doesnt have a generator or battery backup is still more shocking as this electricity is so very vital these days for so many reasons...

hi the sids lost my whole long comment. okay copy paste to clipboard.Yes here in the US we have pretty good electrical power but as p opulations increase in places like New York city and Southern California and everyone uses way too much electricity we have had rolling brown outs in the summers. but to not have a plan and not have one soul with enough
brains to get the generator we do have going is criminal in a retirement center where half the population here are either in wheelchairs or using walkers.but the rolling brown outs were sent to businesses in the summer to have power shut off for say three or four hours in order to have enough power to serve all the residents of the city and our state too. ut this was not a planned thing. I am really curious to know what shut down a good third of Garden Grove. well anyway all is well that ends well.

Oh Dear Hatley....I'm sorry you had to go through that. It is amazing how we rely on electricity these days. May be not so amazing for people in the developed countries.
I still remember when I was just a young girl, there were more power cuts than on. Sometimes days on end....Suffice to say that I come from a not so developed and that too, a small village. Well, those days, we didn't know any better and didn't use electricity as much except for the lights (and some sneakily used for cooking, against the law those days).
Coming to the present, if the power is off for more than one hour...I almost go crazy...especially where I am, it is so hot that with the power off, no fan, no A/c, etc. etc. and nothing to amuse me.
Gone are the days when power outage at night means we can play outside in the moonlight

hi zralte When I was a little girl, we were still using kerosene

not expecting an outage lasting all night. but I did survive as did my

Well, at least you guys had a laugh about it.
I hope the management had taken care off emergency situation like that - by providing at least one person on duty who knows how to turn on the generator. It just seems senseless to me that no one on duty know how to switch on a generator - such a waste of resources.

What type of place is it?
It is so horrible for not having any emergency power supply.
If you place does really not provide any emergency services as maintenance personnel, oxygen machine, power supply and so on, all of you should be placed at the ground floor.
This is good for any emergency evacuation.
In this situation, all of you should complain to the management and publish in your local newspaper to bring the attention from all of the relevant parties inthe hope to improve the existing facilities.
I hope no other incident will happen to any of you during such bad facilities and serives.

Its astonishing that they should not have an automatic emergency generator that starts when the mains power goes off. Especially as it's a multi - floor building which means that if there was an emergency which took out the mains power, a lot of the residents would be trapped! Thats a really poor situation that you are in!

Oh Hatley, you are having a terrible time in that place. At this time of life you should be enjoying the serenity of your senior years not battling the elements as you have been doing lately.
I think the situation in that place is downright atrocious. It's uncomfortable and dangerous for the residents and there should be procedures in place for all these kind of eventualities. I would be writing to my local member of parliament. Can you do something like that? Write to your local government representative? If you can, while you're at it, get the other residents to write a letter as well. Or just get yours copied and send one from everyone...that everyone has signed of course. The more the merrier.

hi mstickle they had absolutely no plan and were dashing around closing fire door s and not accomplishing a damned thing. finally at midnight they calledCAl Edison and found out that th outage would not
be over til 8 am the following morning. so they bedded us down in spare rooms then at 3;30 am they called the maintenance guy and he had the generator running in five minutes and all the lights were back
on. the irritating thing was the nitwit staff insisted we cou ld not
use the elevators until 8 am. but the back one was already running at 4 am.

I really think they need to plan for that kind of thing in the future! There is no reason that people should have to be left in the dark if there was a generator. They should have many of the staff trained on how to start the generator so that if that happens again the lights can be back on. There should also be emergency lights that go on when the power goes off. I hope that all will be ok now!

hi daeckardt things are back to normal ., I agree all the staff on any day should know how to use the generator and it should be set to
go on automatically when the power first goes off. They have fire
plans but no outage plans and they were dashing arund like chickens
with their heads cut off and accomplishing nothing at all.

hi daeckardt well if they dont and some of the wealthier people paying for their parents to be here pull their parents out of here, it will
hurt their pockets for sure. oNe of the three owners is maybe thirty
and she queens around here in an expensive suit and three inch heels that cost a fortune. Why this irritates me I do not really know unless its because she has vetoed so many complaints about the food here and I am sure she has never eaten a meal here.If the owners had to eat the same menu we do and put up with some of their stupid rules there would be a lot of changes around here. lol

I hope that they have taken action toward training the staff (at least SOME of them!) on how to use the generator. There is no reason you should have to sit in the dark overnight unless power is out in the whole city and even then there should be some kind of emergency backup! I hope that they put some kind of outage plan into effect before it happens again. If not, then some kind of action needs to be taken against management. Have a great weekend!!!

Oh, what a relief! I thought it was something I said. Hehe Just kidding. We do tend to take things for granted. Remember that big black out back east like fifteen years ago or so? People freaked! It was worse that H.G. Well's Day the Earth Stood Still or whatever it was called. I even freaked on that one! Oh, I am glad you were careful. They should have a generator. That is scarey!

hi I learned that they do have a generator but shame on the sunday crew'nobody knew how to turn it on and finally when they learned
that the power would not be on til 8 am they woke up the maintenance
man and he had it on in five minutes. I remember the New York City
black out and how people panicked so. now I understand why. lol lol

These situations are common here in India but we have a system called HOME UPS that takes care of our lights, fans, computer and tv. In your case it was truly bad but thank God you came out of it unscathed.

hi yes thats so true I do thank God and I think he was prominent in my not giving in and trying to climb those steep metal stairs in the dark with only a caretaker and a flashlight. I am having a time enough walking
on level ground in daylight. lol. they have a generator so why was it not hooked up to go on in a power outage.?

There are generators here too for hospitals, and mostly for business set ups big and small. They work fine. They just need to put the switch on! I wonder why they did not do it in your case!We even hire them for functions and celebrations in homes.

they didn't even have a contingency plan for these events?
tsk
a retirement center that doesn't take care of its patrons
i always thought retirement centers were heavenly places where everyone can go about their own business and not have a care in the world

hi chipesterkhan I did too so am bitterly disappointed in the sunday crew who had no idea just what to do. hour by hour it grew darker and the president of us residents was rounding up led flashlights so our
large waiting room was better lit. fianlly around midnight he phoned
CalEdison and learned the outage would not be over til 7 am next day. so they decided to let us bed down in spare rooms downstairs. then at 3 am they did c all the maintenance man who came and in five minites had the generator going and we thought okay we can go to our rooms now but no they refused to let us use the elevator til 8 am although the smaller one was working fine and people were already using it.those on oxygen had calle3d their relatives and were taken home where they had power. half of the city was without power.
