I mention, whenever I'm asked, who my favorite writer/s are, and I ALWAYS include Anne McCaffrey. And when I say "Anne McCaffrey" I'm talking about her DRAGON books! Now!!! FINALLY!!! they are talking MOVIE! well, again, actually, but hopefully they are really going to do it this time! They did so well with Lord of the Rings, and the animation in Narnia and the Harry Potter movies, I can believe they will FINALLY manage to do Pern as it should be done! And if they do those right, maybe we'll see Mercedes Lackey's dragon books next! http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=76374 Are you an Anne McCaffrey fan? Do you know about her Pern books? How about the Lackey dragon books?

I read the entire Dragonriders of Pern series (I think) and loved it!! The last one I read was The White Dragon. If any have come out since that, I haven't read them. I ended up moving on to other genre, but it's been like 30 years or so since I read any. If they do make a movie, I might just go. I haven't had much interest in seeing movies made of books I've read (like The Hobbit), but I might just have to watch that!

I like too see them, even if I am often disappointed. Jumper, for example, completely changed from the book, well, MOSTLY changed from the book...

Oh, my stars & whiskers!!! You KNOW how thrilled this makes me! I've yearned for decades to see her works on the big screen, but maybe it's just as well they waited; we now have the film technology to do it justice! Of course, much depends on whether Anne has control over the production so that it's done right! I'm sure all the special effects will be SOTA, but who'll direct? Write the screen play(s)? Act? I do hope they go for quality, not box office draw names, who can't act their way out of an egg! Ooooo! I'm so excited! As for Lackey's books, dragons or Valdemar's Companions--yes yes big BIG YES! Same caveats as for McCaffery! And next, "The Saga of Seven Suns!" If that were made into a series of films--& it would have to be, for the same reason the Star Wars epic needed several--it would, with the right team effort, join the others in history as a classic work. I crave such films. It's high time Hollow-weird stopped going back to its dry well & producing remakes & sequels! They need to provide original, enlightening, fantastic "new" films to make up for their dearth of imagination which has made them stagnant for so long! Now I just gotta work on being patient...& "hope we don't get fooled again!" Maggiepie (still vibrating in place...hee!) http://www.mercedeslackey.com/books/joust.html I would rather see Joust, because I just can't see Misty letting go of control with Valdemar... There's still a lot in the air, but I'm sure you've looked at the link

I am the odd ball in my family as this is not my genre. I know I will hear all about it, I will perhaps go to see it anyway. I love wonderful well done movies.

If you go for no other reason that the great special effects, you will have seen a great movie - if they do it right, and it sounds from the link, that they shall!

I want to go and see a Pern Movie! The filmmaker's CG technology should be well up to the Job of creating Pern's Dragons and the new world they live on by now, with the track record of Lord of the Rings and Avatar in creating photorealistic creatures for the big screen.. I'm not familiar with Mercedes Lackey's books at this time,though..

I'm a big dragon fan and have read many books about them or with them involved. However, I've not read the Pern books. Can't remember why. Maybe because I like to have everything settled within one book and not be carried over into a series. I've waited a long time for this final book of the Inheritance series and that is just three books. I have to reread the first part of a series to get set up for the rest. The Pern books entail so many that I'd have to have them all handy to refresh. I think there were a lot in that series, were there not?

I've read all the Pern books, both in release date order and chronological order. I was introduced to Dragonsong when I was a young teen. I've read most of Anne McCaffrey's work. I was very sad to see that she passed away. The rumor of a Pern movie has been circulating for a long time. I hope that it actually becomes a reality in the near future. I would love to see it. I've played the computer game but lost my copy when I moved.

@magicalart Yeah, this just keeps happening with this series. I think that Anne didn't want them to stray too far from the "cannon" of her books, and now that Todd is controlling the universe he can also maintain that. Personally I prefer that and it would be better as a TV series, so you aren't trying to cram thousands of pages of story into a few hours of film.

@ElicBxn Unfortunately, I believe that is true. I had heard that there was a television series in the making but that also didn't come to be. Another author I enjoy has gotten a television series. Terry Brook's Shannara series is pretty good so far.

I've read most of her Pern novels, though after they averted the red star threat I kind of lost interest and I don't think that I've read any of the later ones where she collaborated with her son. I've not heard of Mercedes Lackey either, but I'll look her up on Amazon now to see what I think. A movie base on the Pern novels would be brilliant with modern CGI. If you have seen Avatar, you can see what a Pern movie might look like as far as the flying dragons are concerned.

I agree, Avatar is the yard stick to measure a Pern movie by. I have read them all, I can't say I think Todd is as good as his mother, but those books are set during an earlier Turn so the Red Star is still a threat.

Wow Hayter has not written a screenplay since 2002 (mostly doing video games). He is a great screenplay writer and should adapt the book very well. Of course if this first one goes well... we are going to see an adaptation of all of McCaffrey's work which would be awesome. Zelo

I've read and enjoyed a few Anne McCaffrey but not Mercedes Lackey. I would like to though. I cannot afford to buy books, they are incredibly expensive here so I shop at second hand book stores or go to the library. Those authors are not readily available in both places unfortunately.

I honestly am not really familiar with the name or the books. I am not much of a reader either though. I am, however, happy for you to be excited about it. Try to enjoy.
