This was a debate given at a orphanage for the 15th year building ceremony. Since the orphanage was nearby home, we got a chance to go and spend time with the kids. This was topic given to the kids and each one expressing their own thoughts which was really admirable. Many said wish to be leaders, some said its better to be followers of great people. But amazingly a kid answered that he wanted to be Unique on his own way with his own principles and ideas. So if this question is put to you, what would you answer?

I would be that unique someone and following my own principal and ideas. Wow, I like this boy. He is after my own heart... Seriously, it is hard to be a leader, and at times it is also hard to be just a follower. I would like to have both roles in my life where in some aspect I lead while in others I follow.

Hi jennyze, Thats so great to hear that you were same like that boy. That boy really surprised me and what a broad attitude he has got at this age. He wanted to be unique and make up his name. Nice to hear you have same thoughts of him. Thats a logical answer, we can play both roles depending on the time..

Yes, I believe that a leader is also a follower. How can someone be a leader if he/she never follow... order, rules, guidelines...

Thats a pretty fact, we have to be a follower sometime to develop into a leader. So who is your favorite leader or role model you follow? The person inspired with his principles?

There are plenty of people who for safety's sake should be followers always. But when you think about it a leader is actually a follower. Each of us must learn from someone before venturing into a leadership role. Also, everyone has "an axe to grind". Whether that be a politician's popularity pole, or their success in office. The Pope follows what he thinks God wants. The royal family in England have to follow royal protocol and stay in good light with the public to stay royal. A good leader is first a good follower. They will listen to the opinions of others and cherish good advisers.

Hi 2004cqui, Those are great words! You are right, a good leader is a good follower at first. That can shape them to gain the leadership qualities as well. I totally agree with you without any second thought. Thats an highly impressive answer.

everybody is both a leader and a follower. A leader in his own life and a follower of laws and rules stipulated by the government. For team work, I would like to be a leader after being a follower for years or so.

Hi fadetoblack, Thats a smart answer! You have given a simple example to explain entire concept so clearly. You are right, follower then becoming leader is right balanced way to succeed as follower as well as leader.

Halu besthope, while reading this topic it comes to my mind a phrase which is "he's natural born leader" that i was heard from one of a guest speaker when i was graduated during my elementary.but for me, leadership qualities are develop "after birth"through the decisions we make.We choose people to follow, which ultimately shapes our leadership abilities, therefor,to become a great leader must learn how to become a good follower. and to be a good follower you must carefully select a good leader, becoz this leader will shape your character and ultimately teach you to be a great leader. there are two qualities;a dynamite leader and a non-dynamite leader.for me i will choose to be a follower, and i would choose a leader which is dynamite leader.Becoz i'd choose a dynamite leader, i do believe that i will be develop as a good follower and that qualities it is sign my skills to be a great leader someday. thanks GOD BLESS

Hi sydalg, You have worded it so politely those valuable words! So you go with dynamite and non - dynamite qualities. Thats a best way to emerge as a skilled leader for which developing as a good follower will pave the way. I totally accept your points meant so meaningfully

Just being a follower means that you are led by somebody else. you adhere to their opinions and ideas. There is nothing wrong with being a leader and following your own voie and heart. there are times when being a leader is what you need to be. Other times just following the crowd is easier to do.

Hi Sender, Thats balanced answer. So It highly depends on what our heart wishes to be. Either follower or leader which ever we find it easier and freedom, we can follow that as both has its own good. Appreciate your answer

For me, that is something to be discovered within yourself. One must have the guts, determination and discipline if he/she wants to be a leader and must also be an example of a good follower. The leader takes almost all the credits whenever his /her followers accomplished something. So for me it's better to be a leader.

Hi Stanley, Nice to hear you wish to be a leader. And true, it totally depends on what we are. Based on which we can decide to be either a good follower or good leader. So do you have any inspirable leader or personality?
@Harold_ks (1673)

It depends on who has the more superior knowledge on the issue or event. If I know that I have less knowledge on a given scenario, then I would choose to be a follower, but if I know and I am confident that I have a wide and competitive knowledge on the given situation, then I would choose to be the leader. It's not good to always be a leader, as well as to always be a follower. Both should be experienced. :)

Hi Harold, You pointed it right! Its not to stay one way so we cannot enjoy the joy of other role. So follower and leader both plays a sides of coin. We need to be either to get a better shape of experience.. So who is your leader whom you have been inspired on any main aspect?

Well nice answer by the kids. there are really rare and unique and i am sure the kid would do what he just said. Be unique and follow his own principles and make a new name for himself! As for me i would prefer to be a follower rather than a leader. I don't think i can manage such a huge responsibility on my shoulders and quite frankly i am rather good at following orders rather than giving them! Cheers!

Hi Raviteja, I would say you have a honest answer. Not everyone wish to be a leader on all cases. I agree with you. But without your knowledge you would be a leader. Ask how? I would say as a good parent, as a good dad or mom. Your kids may identify you as their leader or role model. Correct me if am wrong? Yours is a valid point, as most of us prefer to be a good follower rather than a leader. Thats a impressive answer.

I don't want to be either, but to some extent we all get to be both in life. Sometimes we lead, sometimes we follow. No-one can be a leader in all aspects of their life, though I'm not so sure about being a follower. Maybe some can be just followers...If they can, I feel a bit sorry for them, as I think we all should have our own individuality and independence (of thought, if not of action).

Hi Liliac, You have well worded! Thats the real practical of life. We need to lead as well follow to understand the life better. Individuality and independence is main identity of each individual. I believe in these two which is important to shape up oneself. Thats an impressive answer liliac

In this case, I think I would like to be a leader after first being a follower. There will be some phases for the transaction from a follower to a leader. At first, when I lack knowledge in dealing with a certain situation, I'd better follow someone who is sophisticated with the stuff. After several times of experience, I would try to become the leader of the team facing similar conditions so as to solve the problems smoothly and share my thoughts with others.

Hi sfleric, Thats an experienced answer! True experience brings in lot of transition from one stage to other. Everyone wishes to grow up. So initial stage being a follower, as a learner. And gaining the experience, you can qualify for the leader and by that way you can be a knowledge bank for someone's search! Beautifully said!

For me you will never be a good leader if you never been a good follower.I don't believe that leaders are born, a leader should have experiences and trainings so that he will become the best and effective leader.

It is really great to be with kids debate which enlightened the topic on being a leader or follow the leaders. In my case I would follow the leaders and on gaining experience automatically will become a leader. I feel this is the right path to be a leader.

I would be a follower first, in order to be a leader. You cannot lead, if you don't have experience from the superior you follow. But of course at the end, I want to be a leader. You have a nice posts. Have a blessed day!

Hi Valleyofberaca, Thats a experienced answer. Its not easy to lead without good experience, so as a follower you can gain lots of role and knowledge. So If you think you have to follow, who is your favorite leader that you have in your mind?
