Hi all, todays topic is do you still rent movies? As some of you may know, I'm a paid survey taker. Today I can across the topic of renting dvds/blu-ray disc. When I came to this question, I couldn't remember the last time I actually rented a movie from netflix, blockbuster or what have you. With the down turn in the economy I think this is one of the things I've cut back on buying to save more. So what about you, do you still rent movies?
P.S I use other methods on watching new movies such as actually going to the movies or screening movies for free via the web.
opinions please!

I too no longer rent movies. I do before though but since there are so many sites online that we can watch movies for free, I just simply go there whenever I feel like watching one and it makes me feel comfortable watching very good movies on big screens as well. So renting is not a choice anymore. I haven't seen stores that rents movies as well here in my place, maybe they have been closed for people now a days prefer to watch it online and on the movie house.

Understood, the internet makes life so much easier. There are a lot of free sites in which viewing movies online is made easy and again free. Who doesn't love that four letter word? Works for me, and others! Thanks for sharing!

From time to time, especially when I can get a free night's rental from redbox I will. I am not a big movie watcher but have been getting more into it lately and have seen a lot of movies at the theatre, I've not had to pay for it someone else has. I used to have a movie gallery membership before they closed their doors, not sure if they had any where you are.
I don't stream the movies from online, don't have the type of computer that would allow me to do that even if I wanted to, though sometimes I have watched movies on youtube.

We used to rent movies from blockbuster before we foudn out Netflix. Since we have netflix, we get movies or TV shows from netflix every other day, as soon as we finish a disc, we send it back and get another one back quick. We rarely go to movies because watching movies in the cinema is not really my thing and I think it is a waste of money so we do netflix, besides, we don't have a television so netflix is good for us.

Yea, I understand that to people who is interested in movies would like to pay for the ticket to go in but watching movies in the cinema is just not my hobby. If my husband, sister or friends want to go in the cinema, I would go together though.

To each its own. See I don't feel this way about going to the movie is a waste of money. I enjoy the movie going experience. Theaters full with people and great concession choices. Yes going to the movies does cost a pretty penny. But i'm sure I can spend a few buck for a night of fun. Netflix is a great option. I once has a subscription with them before, great experience and if i was to rent again Netflix would be my first choice!

Hi Keshia - Same as you I can no longer remember the last time I rented a movie. There are now a lot of ways to watch good movies like through the net and Cable Channels. However, most of the time I watch movies by going to the cinema with my hubby. kids or friends.
Have a nice day! :)

Cheap is good. I think now there are so many choice more now than before because of technology. I wouldn't mind watching a movie in a theater, online or on dvd. Renting just isn't a choice for me anymore.

Yes, the movie ticket prices are really hight. As I mentioned i'm a paid survey taker, so some rewards offered are movie tickets. Every time I want to see a movie I'll participate in that particular survey sites in order to cash out with my free movie ticket. So going to the movies is free. The last 3 times I went to the movies was free for me. On April 22nd, I plan on going to see another movies, and I have another free movie ticket just waiting on me, because I'm almost already ready to cash out. You have to work around things to benefit yourself. I love a night of entertainment.

I can't recall the last time I spent my money on Video Rentals anymore. But currently I watch movies for free on the internet considering everything in our country (the philippines) is very expensive now. But I only watch Blockbuster movies in theatres. Coz it's worth my money..haha

I have Cable. Most of the movies i want to see , air on one of the many channels i have. I don't need to rent films. The last film I rented was a film I couldn't find. That was a few years ago. Then I found it on amazon.com and I bought it!

Amazon is a good choice. I have digital cable, and movies come and go quite often. Although I do like seeing recent movies, to keep up with entertainment. Renting on the other hand just hasn't been a choice for a long time now.

no, i stop renting over a decade ago. i just watch movies on tv, download or borrow from friends. i guess yes, it just add up to my bills. it's like buying a book and dump it in my corner after reading. that's why i don't buy books too since. just a waste of money. not the type of thing i want to collect.

This is understood, people are now more focused on saving money now than before. So if cutting back with entertainment is what you have to do, that do just that. I've cut back a lot on things as this. Over the summer about 2 years ago, I was at the movie theater every weekend, because of the hit blockbusters/movies after movies coming out. Very fun, now I don't have room to do this anymore.

I stopped renting movies a long long time ago. I don't even buy dvds very often now either. Mostly I'll just watch movies in the cinema or download them on my computer. I also always watch movies on my TV on Sky Movies and other similar channels so I don't really see the point on purchasing or renting movies any more...

I agree. We are alike in this way. I don't rent movies anymore nor do I buy dvds like I once have a long time ago. I too prefer to go to the movie theater for the experience and I just like going out for fun!

I did away with cable and satellite and bought a Roku box for my TV. I now stream the internet with it. I have a subscription to netflix and hulu plus so for 15 dollars a month I get all I ever need. Plus Roku has tons of other channels. Gone are the days of paying 75 per month and not even having a premium movie channel! We love it!

I've heard about Roku box, but I know very little of it. It sounds like its working for you and saving money at the same time! Thanks for sharing!

I no longer rent movies either. These days we have a media player which plays files straight onto our TV set, so we download movies and TV series as well.
This is the modern age and the rental companies will be suffering from this. But we were also fed up with renting DVD's, getting them home and sitting down all excited, only to find out that halfway through the film, the DVD stopped working! This has happened to us many times over the years.

I can agree with this. Renting dvds that not working properly only happened either once or twice, so I guess we got lucky compared to you guys. You are right, there are so many other options opposed to just renting. I watch movies online for free, can't beat that. Its free and in the comfort of your own home.

there's a lot of sites on the web where you can download or watch movies for free. If i really like the movie, i watch it on theater but if i just want to watch certain movies i just watch it on the internet.

We are alike in this way. If I really want to see a movie I think is worth watching at a movie theater I would go spend a few bucks there. Otherwise if im still interested in a movie, but its not as good as I know it could be, ill just watch it for free online.

Oh ya, I still have my Netflix subscription. I love it and I rent movies all the time. It's a lot cheaper than going to the theater for every new movie that comes out. They come out on DVD so fast nowadays that's it's not that big a deal to just wait for it. I don't really miss going to the movies anymore. I have a big screen, surround sound home theater system w/blu ray so that's good enough for me.

To each its own. I don't mind going to the movie theater for pure experience and entertainment. I use to unsubscribe to Netflix for their free trial. It was a great experience, and you are right, moves are coming out on DVD really fast. So many options to keep up to date with great movies, can't really complain.

Agree, I've made a lot of cut back and entertainment was on of them. If I want to see a movie I would just go to the theater, or watch them online for free. Renting isn't an option for me anymore, and buying dvd I think I brought one (which was free) in the last almost year?

I rent dvds in the past 10 years ago. But now since the economy is down, I just pay my astro bills which showing 10 channels that costs about RM70 equals to USD25 if I am correct. It saves me some money rather than renting every single day. And the movies is new in astro too.

Thats great to hear, any method is best as long as it is saving you money. This downturn int he economy has made a lot of changes, some for the best, some for the worst, we just have to learn to work around that.

I still rent movies! I won't get Nexflix! I tried it and they screwed me over with the price! My computer is not set up to get movies either! If I do rent movies, which is not alot,I go to Family Video. They are cheap! I never liked Blockbuster! They are expensive! We used to have two Blockbusters. One went out of busniess a few years ago. Now the second one is going ou of busniess! I'll stick with Family Video!

Blockbuster is expensive and its to bad to hear netflix tricked you out of your money. In my opinion its because of Netflix that blockbuster is out of business. A couple blockbusters closed down in my city I can think of 2, and one hollywood video. If sticking with family video works for you, I say stay with it!

Well i don't think anyone would rent any movies anymore. With all the latest updates torrents and other such software it would be such a waste for someone to download movies any more now. just simply keep it for download and then you would have the movie is another couple of minutes. Rent movies is more for the mushy romantic couples who like to snuggle up to each other and watch some romantic movies. That's what i think. It's been 3 years now since i have watched a rented movie myself!
Cheers!

Well I guess I would have to differ. Some mylotters comment that they still are renting movies, but from local cheap markets. Some do and some don't. There are a lot of new ways to work around renting movies. As you mention watching movies online is popular. I do this, because its free and you don't have to leave home. This option works for me, plus I don't mind a night of entertainment as going to the actual movies theater.

I don't download movies at all online. I do screen them for free. Who can beat free? Its there its free, and easy to do. I'm all for watching free movies online. NO illegal downloading is involved.

I still occasionally rent from redbox because it's at a lot of grocery stores, so it's really convenient to get a movie there. But I definitely don't rent as much as I use to. I use to go to blockbuster or hollywood video nearly every week. It was a fun experience because I would take soo long to pick the movie I wanted to watch, even though I would eventually end up watching all of them!
Now I don't really enjoy the experience of selecting movies, because there is always a line, and there are not many selections on redbox. I miss the old days.

Redbox is another option I forgot about, and its really cheap and as you said convenient. I wanted to mention it was fun to browse around blockbuster and there are so many choices you really don't know to choose. I do remember that experience, but there are so many other options opposed to just going to blockbuster which is why a lot are not going out of business.

I still do rent movie when I failed to watch it in a big screen or perhaps downloading it quite takes a long time to wait. But I'm afraid that pirating it might be one of the reasons that declined abruptly. You know, you could have a clear copy via web like utorrent or any free movie sites.

I watch movies online. I don't ever download them, I just screen them for free. I've never heard of utorrent, but I use other sites like surfthechannel or fastpasstv.com
