that my husband went out and bought a Marie Callendar Razzleberry Pie. We had that instead of supper with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream on it. I consider pie to be a healthy food . . .
after all this one is full of three kinds of berries. And it is made with wheat. The ice cream is from the dairy group.
Good thing I am a grown up and will not get in trouble for not eating right.
When I was a kid, some doctor told my mom that it sure did not hurt once in a while to just let us have all the goodies we wanted. So the day we went home after Christmas or Thanksgiving, we ate left over desserts all day. We could go in and warm up turkey and ham as well, if we wanted.I guess that is one of my good memories from growing up. That was in the good old days when we would have every thing made from scratch.
Do you ever just indulge yourself by eating desserts all day or instead of meals?

hi gardengerty I remember one of our diabetes nurse educators said if we are good eighty percent of the time we can have one day when we can
enjoy pie or pizza or icecream or whaterver our little diabetic hearts want just so we really do not completely pig out.today I played bingo with my fellow bingo fanatics and had an apricot muffin huge one
and later a cake like creation with fluffy goo in the center and white frosting with lemon flavor oh yes hostess, I finally remembered the name as I have not had one in months. lol tomorrow back to eating only healthy food my son and I often had leftover pumpkin pie with a huge scoop of cool whip ontop for breakfast during the holidays or a stuffing sandwhich lol such fun again once a week not every day. oh my I am drooling on the keyboard. Razzleberry pie my favorite from Marie's wow. now i will dream of it. lol lollhey pass some virtual razzleberry pie through the monitor here at least that wou ld not shoot my blood sugar up.

I like this razzleberry as it does not seem too sweet. I guess today was treat day. The apricot muffin was probably a great thing as well. My mom liked Little Debbie strawberry cake rolls.

Hi Mrs. Hatley
Oh my I was reading your response and my mouth watered right away wishing for some yummy dessert. Thankfully we do not gain weight and or affect our sugar levels while reading.

Rice is our staple food. I have been eating rice since I had my two front teeth and was fed with watery rice where rice was blended to fine grains and cooked with lots of water fit for babies to eat and since then have been consuming rice with other side dishes. I was rarely exposed to other comfort foods until I was on my own. Pies and ice creams were considered luxuries when I was growing up probably because there were too many mouths to feed then and those stuffs were pricey compared to a simple meal of rice and fish/vegetables. Now that the market has been saturated with these varieties of foods, I have trained my taste-bud to savor them and can safely replace pies for that usual meals on my table. Pies? I love eating pies and have learned to make my own pies and it has become a common meals replacement when I am too lazy to cook a real meal.

I enjoyed adding to my diet when I got married and moved away. We ate a lot of gravy and bread as fillers. Others eat a lot of potatoes. In fact, one of the things I was hungry for and made a lot was rice. In my culture and upbringing it was a treat. I can, and do make pies, cookies and cakes. In some ways it seems it is less expensive to buy this pie ready made, because the berries are pretty expensive.

I love pumpkin pie, with or without the whipped cream. You know, all the goodies may be why I got sick every holiday as a kid. Tonight we just had one piece of pie with ice cream, all of our other meals were healthy.

I can't say I do it all day, but when I hit middle school and started having problems, mom figured if I ate apple pie, I was getting apples and some good carbs since she made her apple pies with low sugar, for breakfast, and it wasn't coming back up before 10 a.m.
I had cookies (oatmeal raisin or chocolate chip). For a while instant breakfast until that started giving me problems...
Have I mentioned I have a lot of food allergies?

She was forty when she got diagnosed. She also is lactose intolerant, though she loves milk and cheese, and although she does not test as allergic to citrus, you can see and hear her block up as she eats an orange or has a sip of punch that has lemon in it.

I have a friend here who was diagnosed about five years ago with multiple food allergies, so I understand. She cannot have soy, wheat, corn, and a lot of other stuff. I think she should possible live on broiled meat and lettuce/cucumbers. Yes, I think pie is better than a pop tart any time.

Guilty as charged!
My boyfriend and I on Saturdays for instance can be home all day indulging in sweets and treats the entire day. We so love the times that we do this because he is quite busy and there is that day that we enjoy the quality time and silly times together. I use to have a movie night every Friday with my kids so as a tradition anytime my boyfriend and I can squeeze a Saturday like that we will indulge in fresh pecan pie Ala mode and he knows I so love pineapples so we will have fresh cut and dices pineapples in ice cream and not just once but a couple times throughout the day. I can't let the pineapples go to waste. hehe
Then Sunday rolls around and after Mass I will jump on my bike to work it off. lol

Pecans are good for you, and so are pineapples. I bought one to cut up today. I think it is great. I will try to be back at the Y tomorrow, providing I do not start coughing and make people think I am contagious.

OMG the things that parents tell children that we take literally.
My brother (who lives 3,000 miles away) and I were talking about old times and somehow the subject of brushing your teeth came up. My brother's wife is IMHO OCD and says that you should brush pretty much after you put anything in your mouth and that started the discussion...
So I remember something from my childhood and ask my brother... what's the maximum allowable number of spits when brushing your teeth? And we both in concert say "TWO".
My mother was there and said "Where did you two hear that?"
My brother looks quizzically at me and says to my mother "YOU used to say it all the time".
My mother laughs and says "That's because you guys used to spit 30 times a night... you STILL remember that?"
"Yeap and live by it!"
So to indulging... that is another story.... the story of a doctor who was trying to make a point and a football player trying to sell Coke (cola).
Remember "Mean Joe Green" guzzling a 16oz. Coca-cola and giving the kid the jersey and all that (I think it was redone w/Troy Polomolo). Between that and my doctor saying when I was sick to drink a bathtub full of my favorite soda I learned how to down a 16oz in oh about 7 seconds.
NOW there are 20oz bottles (the history of Coke and Pepsi and how we went from the different sizes is fascinating but beyond this post). There are 57mg/caffeine and approximately 200 calories. I could (and did) down a 6-pack in less than 5 minutes.
Um... 342mg caffeine and 1200 calories in 5 minutes....
Maybe there should be a show "Parents Say The Darndest Things"
Zelo

You must have been prone to dehydration. Actually, when I had croup with my colds the doctor would write a prescription for mom to get coke syrup at the pharmacy/soda fountain. It is a bronchodialator. However, it would not have been that much. It also helps with digesting fatty meals. Wow, some things get taken to extremes.

If you do not fill that urge often you will end up eating a whole lot of other things to make up for it. It is much better to eat what you want.

Hi Gerty!
You are making us feel envious by revealing that you had so many goodies. Hope you would have enjoyed the treat thoroughly. I cannot sustain on desserts all day, I would need some solid food to satiate my hunger.

Oh, that was not all we ate all day. We ate a brunch type meal of chicken salad with fruit in it. We went grocery shopping, then we came home and ate salmon with a potato and peas. So we had two regular meals before we finished our day with the goodies.

I'm laughing with you at how you've justified your reason for eating dessert instead of a meal! LOL You are right though, it is healthy food but with a lot of sugar in there too! But ohhhhh so gooood!! LOL
Yeah, I've eaten stuff like that instead of a meal. I think we all have at one time or another. It doesn't hurt to do it every now and then so enjoy yourself! LOL You only live once! So make it worth your while....

We do eat healthy most of the time. I think someone else mentioned the 80/20 rule. You eat well 80% of the time and the other 20 % you eat what you want.

Mmmm...sounds good! I haven't tried having just desserts the whole day, but I have tried just chips and ice cream and instant cup noodles. Wow, your pie is really healthy! I wish I'd known that when I was so kid so that I would have argued that with my mom then.

I am glad we got to do that on holidays, because we did not have money for many treats. Pie can be pretty healthy if it does not have too much sugar in the filling. The crust does have a lot of fat in it, but then you can eat a small piece.

I prefer pie over cake. One day once in awhile of just desserts is not too bad. If I had that much icecream I would probably have really bad heart burn. It is fun to spend a day sampling sweets, though.

I think I would feel GUILTY if I did something like that, not that I haven't sometimes thought of doing just that. I really enjoy good food, and that includes most anything, including dessert type food. I would probably pay dearly for doing that to myself, though.

The most I ever did was defiantly eat dessert before dinner! My mom wasn't a tyrant but she said dessert was for after dinner. So when I finally got out on my own I would have dessert before dinner--or way before, like for breakfast!
I think a change from routine is good for you!

There were foods I was hungry for that we seldom or never had when I was growing up, so I was sure to make them. I taught myself to bake rolls, I make huge sticky buns as well. I guess that is an okay way to be defiant.

Sounds good!
I do that just about everyday. I might squeeze in some healthy food between desserts! I was doing much better when I was focused on my diet, but right now I just don't have time to prepare any meals for myself. I prepare dinner.. but I usually leave for work just before it's done so I don't get to eat it. I come home and snack on whatever is quick and easy.
I know.. I'm awful. Maybe eventually I'll get back in the habit of eating right.

I do. I get a free 6 inch every time I work.. and I get 50% off everything else. Most days I will just get my free 6 inch and that's it, some days I will get my 6 inch and bring home footlongs for me and the hubby.

Ah, ha....you caught me. Some days I'll just eat a piece of left over pie or cobbler or cake. I just don't seem to have much of an appetite every day. When I was growing up we didn't have (or weren't allowed) snack-type stuff (potato chips, nachos, Ho-Ho's etc.) and/or desserts at every meal. For a long time in my adulthood I didn't care much for sweets. Since I've aged a bit, I find I have somewhat of a sweet tooth and I usually keep something sweet on hand. I make pies, cakes, brownies and other stuff regularly. If I run out, it's time to make something else. Right now I have a last piece of apple crumb pie and then everything is gone. So I think I'll make some brownies tonight. Or another pie. Or a cake of some sort. I have a great new recipe for a coffee cake that's to die for. I've made it twice in the past two weeks.

We did not have snacks or "junk food" growing up. Cake every Sunday, and canned peaches, usually. But watch out at Thanksgiving and Christmas. It seemed that in addition to cakes, jello, and candy we also had probably a pie for every person.(over 20 ) So that is why the day after, we got to eat dessert all day.
