What is the difference between 'Silver' and 'Sterling Silver'?

I got a pair of earrings from this store (not a jewellry store) and it says 'Silver' on the pack. I don't think it is silver because the price they charged is very cheap, not the silver price. I also saw some earrings which are marked as 'Sterling Silver' that are expensive than the stuf I bought. I'm confused because I thought sterling silver is not pure silver. I'm allergic to fake jewellry. I get itching, so I have to buy the right one.

What sachii said is true about Sterling silver. I'd just like to add that there are lots of alloys which have been sold as silver. I'm not saying they are not real, but these alloys contain only a small percentage in silver. There could be another reason why the earrings you have bought are cheap. It could be that the earring was from their old stock when the silver price was low. Now that the silver price has increased big time, the new stocks will of course be costlier and the shop sold the old stock at the old price therefore, you get it cheaper. If you have any doubt, take it to a jeweller and have him run a test.

I am thinking about taking it to an expert to run a test. I should be very careful about it because I am allergic to cheap metals. I got the earring from youpearl.com and it is listed as siver, but I might be allergic to non-pure silver. I don't want to loose the earring because it looks good on me.

Hi daliaj! Sterling silver is an alloy which contains about 92.5% silver and 7.5% from other metals. Sterling silver is harder than pure silver. Pure silver easily bends or deforms when you apply force / pressure on it. The pure form is not ideal for functional objects such as spoons, it is best if it will be used for wires for conductivity. Sterling silver is cheaper than pure forms. Happy mylotting!

Thank you very much. This is a good explanation. I am not used to sterling silver because I lived in India all my life. Now, I moved to USA and I see sterling silver here, which is a new thing to me. I am allergic to fake jewellry that makes me more picky when buying ornaments.
