discussions that are clear as mud

How often do you post a discussion and then when the responses come in realize that what seemed to you a clear discussion has been totally misunderstood? I figure that I must just have a different sense of humor then most. In other words I'm not very funny if you can't hear my voice or see my face. Guess I'll just have to try harder.

hi savypat several times I have had people mistake my title for all the
discussion and respond showing that they did not read one word of the discussion,I purposely put the titles into quotes thinking that would clue in readers that the title was not about me at all. but they plunged in and were commiserating with me for having a husband who made me cry nyself to sleep at night. not so.,I was talking about a poor mylotter who was really miserable in her marriage.about half the people realized I was talking about someone else the rest had not even tried to read my discussion. I knew my discussion was clear as I read and reread it and changed a few words before even posting.I have found too that some people do not get any subtleties of humor just pie in the face stuff.

By using the smilies on the left hand side might help get the pint across. it is hard to tell the context sometimes, I agree.

Sometimes I think things get lost in translation. Since there are so many different nationalities in one place (not that its a bad thing), but sometimes how something is said gets misunderstood, or not understood at all. A lot of times if someone doesn't quite get what I am talking about, I try to go back and try to explain it further. I think that it is just interesting to see how others view or understand what I am discussing.

Though on scrapbooking forums, where I tend to spend a lot of time, I never see this thing happening, on mylot it seems to happen just about as often as it does not. I actually also think that there is a reason that this happens. I believe that the reason that it happens on mylot is because of the fact that there are people that are here from all different countries. With that said, I think that there is some degree of misunderstanding that happens because of the fact that there are a lot of members here that use English as a second language.

Yes I know how frustrating it can be when we really take time in writing our discussion in the best way we can so as to entertain , inform..or to interact. We may be misunderstood and/or they may not agree to what we are saying , but this is totally different from not understanding at all cause you just read the response and it is all about a different story.
You just want to say," hey you should have opened a new discussion with this one instead of making this as a response to my discussion!"
I try to be funny sometimes, but very often they don't think it is funny.
Oh well (^_^)

Aww sorry savypat! It is hard when you can't see a person to be able to tell what emotions they are expressing. You have to throw some lol (laugh out louds) or some lmbo (laughing my butt off) in there for people to know when you are joking around. Don't worry, you can't please everyone.

Some people do take me more seriously than they should. I do not start that many discussions. I am trying to remember any of your discussions that were humorous, but none come to my mind. I think that when I do respond to your discussions though, I am on track.

What may appear funny to you, may not be funny to another. I took International Business Management in school and still remember emphasis was put on issues such as slang and body language, seeing these can be interpreted very differently by people of other nationalities or ethnic groups.
If you had made efforts to be understood and others still do not understand you, then simply ignore them and move on. On the other hand however, some people just view things very differently; which is why I have never supported anyone who seeks to robotize society!

Everyones comprehension is different than someone elses. Like I was mentioning to a customer at work how if you wait to buy something you really odds are it will be gone before it's a lower price. This I found true with shoes if you don't grab it when you see it don't expect another size to come in. I mentioned this to a customer as she was mentioning something similar. And I mentioned how you need to get them when you see them as I often see people buying my size in something cute and wonder if there's more (not that I can afford to wonder) and they are usually gone and discontinued. The customer said she was sorry she bought the pair she had as I told her they were cute. But that didn't mean I wanted them, but more a compliment on her choice of shoe.

Hi, pat.....People these days don't read well. They've formed an opinion already when they read the header and their mind set just goes from there.
I try to read the entire post and disregard the header. A lot of the time the header is just there to get our attention. I have a sense of humor as well and will sometimes respond in a light manner. I just don't understand how other people's minds work at times.

The only way is for the topic title to have a close resemblance to the topic in question which invariably is missing in most of the topic generators. Some just read the titles and get down to responding. Ofcourse the OP can always explain in the comment section what the topic is all about.

I have discussions I was so excited tot alk about but they end up in a waste because people just dont read. They just use the title as the basis of their opinion, Mylot has been frustrated in the last few days, its hard to have a satisfying discussion, i dont really think its language barrier, its about people being lazy to read.

Now we know that you have a funny voice and a funny face .
I will not say that I had a discussion misunderstood by every responder, but by some members who are only reading the title of the discussion and not the entire discussion before giving a response, yes .
