Hubby has taken to watching old movies and I have caught a scene or two. I was surprised at how much violence there was in these old films. By old I mean after world war 2. Now days I don't think there is anymore violence I just think it's much more graphic. Lot's moore blood and gore in full color and sound.

A spray of bullets is still a spray of bullets. Newer movies just let you see the effects where older movies just let your mind fill in the blanks. There's not a lot of difference.

How about domestic abuse in old movies? I recently watched "The Quiet Man" starring John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara. The main part of the movie is a brawl between John Wayne and his new Brother-in-law. But the part of the movie that really raises the eyebrows is the part where John drags Maureen across the moors. I am not sure if that scene would be shot today. Or, how about the "Three Stooges". Now that was a violent series.

I think the three stooges was some of the worse stuff to come out and it was considered OK for children. No wonder we live in such violent times. After all it's all in fun, right?

Really? I think that violence in the movies nowadays is much more severe. I have seen many old movies and the violence is there but not to the extent that it is in todays movies. There is more realistic things about the new movies than the old ones.

Old movies are always a fun to watch with and this also mean that in the days when we were not there we can see the culture of those days by the movies we see. And yes it is not in color so the life less display does not mean much to the younger audiences .

Yes, there was a lot of violence in those old movies. But it was not as graphic and if you pay attention, a lot of violence was implied. You rarely saw someone strangled or stabbed, just a shadow on the wall. They had no problem with showing a shooting, although many of those were heard by the viewer instead of scene and the imagination filled in the rest. The old silent movies had violence, too. I love the silent movies as well as the movies of the 30's and 40's because they didn't show anything more than a kiss and the rest was left to your imagination. Silent movies dealt with unwed pregnancies, affairs (some quite shocking) and all the other things we see in movies now--they just did it with more class and so did the talking movies before around 1955.

Well....a war movie would have to have violence, wouldn't it? But I think so much was left to our imagination in those old movies. Today, they want to show you every piece of flesh that is torn from a body as it's blown to bits.

Hi savvypat. I believe violence has been in the movies, past and present. It is in the approach I think that they differ, and perhaps because of the possibilities present technology offers. Personally, I shy away from movies that are too violent and gory. But there are a few times when violence is so much a part of the movie that if you remove them, it affects the movie. And good movies have a way of presenting it that makes the audience take it as part of the movie and not just to whet the appetite of movie goers. One such that I could mention is the movie "300." I see the art behind the battle scenes. Missed mylot and mylotters.
