When you see homeless people holding signs, do you give them money?

I've made a post regarding homeless before but today, I saw a homeless man very neat with a PET dog, chiwawa to be exact and he was standing with a sign asking for money while holding his puppy. I don't know but it seems like he has enough money to care for himself and the dog.. he looked well dress. Would you donate to those type of people that are well dressed and with a DOG! I feel that if someone can groom them and is neat and tidy, I don't think I'd give my money away. I do give money away to those who look like they need it and coming from someone who doesn't work, hopefully the $1 I give will help them with food or something.

infatuated did it ever dawn on you maybe the man is middle classed just like we were, we wore decent clothes just like you and maybe he had the puppy before on he lost his job and 2 he was evicted from his middle class apartment just like we were. I was 83 then and retired and living with my son. We got behind on the rent and we were evicted nada no home homeless middle class people so perhaps hes not horrible and do you have any idea at all what it feels like to have to bunk with friends who are just renting too then finally you stay one week at the Salvation arme hospitality house. okay so my son knew the streets and homeless shelters were not the answer for us so he got me in here at Gold crest where my social security and ssi check pay the rent and board and he is in hope jhaven gov. sponsored with three other men all looking for work my son has a part time job. but look we are still those "awful lazy Homeless" in that we have no home anymore. You who have homes and jobs and do not even appreciate the fact have no right looking down on someone else who has probably lost every thind and a few days before was a working middle class person like yourself.I have a different slant on homeless after seeing what can happen to a middle class person like myself and my son.Judge not least you be judged. a lot of middle class people like yourself lost jobs and apts and yes they looked for work but there are hundreds of others looking for the same job too. do not criticize until you know the m ans real circumstances

Amen. It could happen to any of us and it has happened to a lot of us. I have friend right now living a hotel with her two teenage children and disabled spouse. She really does not need to be working because of her physical health but she tries so hard to find work she can do, also trying to keep her family indoors. It is a nightmare for her. She has a strong professional background but has not been able to find a job. Unemployment is not enough. She has been turned down by so many agencies mainly because she does not have a permanent address, and she's not officially a resident of this state (she came here through the last job she had). There's a lot more to her story but the bottom line is she is one who really needs help and is having a hard time getting the break she needs to get back on her feet.

I'm not criticizing people here, I'm asking this topic to see what people view points are and most answered back they wouldn't from the impression of how the guys dressed and with a dog. Yeah, I may not know the guy and not know what his scenario is but everyone judges people. Yeah, people may not admit it but everyone judges someone and somehow. If I'm walking down the street in a hot neon pink colored pants, I am sure everyone would make some comment in their heads without knowing who I am. And, honestly: I have an uncle and aunt that has 7 kids all under the age of 17, youngest being 2 and they are struggling each & every day- in and out of living with relatives, trying to get their feet but they don't beg. They lost their home, they lost their cars, they lose their pets, everything but they chose not to beg because they feel that they're life is complete even if they don't have money- they're happy each & every day. I know several people who aren't middle class and aren't fortunate but they make it through each day paying their bills & the minimal balances off on their credit cards but they don't beg and complain. If everyone gave a person a $1, it'd help that one person but what about all the other people in the world who lost their jobs? Home? Etc? Although $1 may seem nothing to one person, giving a $1 to someone to get back on their feet means you'd have to give a $1 to every person you see.. it's hard to do. I do donate money even though I don't work and I donate my time at homeless shelters.

I don't usually give homeless people money but I do give them food like sandwiches or something as such. I don't feel like giving them money because who knows what they might do with them. But there are some homeless people who really get mad when i give them food. They throw them away. Actually they really scare me.

I dont know but the guy holding the dog doesnt sound very needy to me. I usually give money if I have it to homeless people who look needy but I wont give money to people who just want easy money. . ppl like that make homeless people look bad. i agree with you infautated.

I just want to comment here that a lot of people are living in hotels now and it is not the luxury stay that people think it is. People are losing homes and cannot qualify for housing right away. Shelters are full and sleeping on the streets is dangerous. The hotel becomes the quickest fix because you don't have to qualify and utilities are included. However it is very expensive. Then your constant battle becomes how am I going to stay another night? If I get the room, how will I eat? They don't have time to go out the next day and get a job (that is a process, just like getting an apartment) so the only thing they can do is beg.

I wouldnt give my money away to those people who dont look like they need it but then again who knows if they really need it who knows if every homeless person is really in need of assistance ..I come from a poor country where there is no such thing as welfare social assistance I believe in a rich country like Canada there should be no homeless people as they are given lots of opportunities for advancement in the workplace lots or resources to help them out..My opinion I only give my money away to a good cause like local shelters, hospital and local children charities and many others.

I don't like giving money at all. Not that I am selfish or what, but sometimes, people use them in syndicates to exploit children, old people and with deformities. i'd rather give them food or something to drink.

A well dressed bagger..huh.. I would'nt give any single cent to this type of bagger. Ther are a kind of lazy people looking for easy money. We work so hard to fulfill our family needs. I'm not going to share with this type of people unless the people who really have nothing, homeless and nothing to eat.

Why would I, from the looks of what you have said he can provide for himself and his pet which I guess ordinary people can not afford. There are some people who thinks they can fool others on giving them money on the way they dress up.Maybe I'll give him if it's for some charity or for institutions that do help the needy.

There are people who are called professional beggars they beg for something that they can afford to work for most of these people I think needs some sort of rehabilitation, If ever I encounter I will not give it seems wrong.

I will rather buy some food for him rather than giving money. In our place, every Wednesday there is an old man in a wheelchair knocking on the door and asking for a help. I always give him food to eat like noodles, a kilo of rice, or can goods but not money.

i don't think i will give money to a guy like him. being a beggar means he has nothing to live on, begging is his only choice. but if he is well dressed with a pet, it means his situation is not so bad.

hello ibby, I won't give a cents to that person. If he managed to sustain having a pet dog and a chihuahua ..wow,that's an expensive one i can't even afford having one. Or...might be one of tv shows crank jokes...hahaaha Seriously,i don't give alms to beggars...there's a lot of racket these days using children and elders for money. I once talked to an elderly woman and offer help that i can bring to a home for the aged so she can have shelter and better life, but she refused. So,i assumed that..she's not alone in her life..someone is with her and maybe using her. We must be smart when giving help...bad people might be using those poor victims..let's not give them satisfaction. have a good day

When I see a needy or homeless person holding a sign, I usually do not just give them money. I will however sometimes run to get them some food or something they could use that is a necessity. If it's chilly out sometimes a hot chocolate as well. It does seem a little strange for this person to be there with their dog, well dressed and clean possibly a newly needy person fresh on hard times? I'm not sure. I just stick to if they look needy- I give them something they would need other than money.

I have to say, I've never gave a homeless guy any money. I remember once hearing a story about my cousin. She once gave a guy she though was homeless money. He was standing on the side of the road asking for money, my cousin felt bad and gave all she had. Next thing she new this same guy was getting in his car and leaving off with her money. Shocking I know. Her brothers and sisters did nothing but laugh, but it was so wrong of that guy. This is not my excuse for not giving the homeless money, but I never or hardly ever carry cash anyway.

Yeah I heard a story like this scenario too on television. It's hard to know who is a real person in need of money and who is trying to be a fake homeless person..

hello, Wow! It was the first time I heard a man holding a puppy and this puppy is kinda expensive by in terms of foods and how they care of it through the shampoo etc. Ha ha funny right?. but for me I dont donate at all because I will kind of confuse if he is really poor or not. Me myself I dont have puppy because I know it is expensive. But sometimes I dont even give to those people who are homeless because they sometime abuse the people.

I know right? I was shocked! It was early in the morning when I was going to my boyfriends... he was standing their with his dog nicely groomed & he looked well dress asking for money! I don't even have a pet either cause its expensive, money, shots, ect!

No, I wouldn't. Clearly if you want to get the begging job done right, you would want to look the poorest you can achieve. It isn't some oscar party, so there's no point in tidying up for your begging occasion. Of course when someone who isn't poor and is acting, it is foolable if you do it correctly. Sometimes you can't tell and you give them money. You can't always assume everyone is a phoney, though. I would give them money if they really look in a bad shape, such as shopping carts full of garbage bags and whatnot.

Yeah, that is very true. I do give money to those who look like they can use the extra $1 or so and with shopping carts full of stuff too.
