I have recently moved to the Philippines, and I am amazed at the resourcefulness of the local people here. I have worked in the engineering field for 25 years and have never had the talent that I see here on a day to day basis. They make use of every available item to achieve the final result of whatever they are constructing or modifying. Nothing is thrown out because it will certainly be used at a later date on their next project. How do they do it without schooling.
My hat is certainly off to them...

welcome to the Philippines mr. menace..
and welcome to mylot! =D
glad that you appreciated filipino's resourcefulness..
well, as the saying goes, "necessity is the mother of invention." when you have something that has to be done and you ran out of materials you need, certainly you'll look for a substitute for that material.
hope you enjoy your stay here in the Philippines..
by the way, may i ask, do you already have your favorite filipino dish..?

ahh yes...Plato said this and it was quoted by non other than Thomas Edison who I would assume had to be very resourceful in his era to achieve the results of his inventions.

Hi menace..
Thank you for the nice words to us Filipinos.. You don't know how much it means to us!
You know, Filipinos are advance thinker.. We don't throw things so easily as we might be able to use it again..
They have a lot in my mind of how they will use it in the future!

hi menace. I'm a filipino, thank you for the compliments you gave to my fellow filipino workers.
actually filipino's are very creative and sometimes because of lack of resources we tend to use every single thing we have. we don.t want to waste any of those. my father also is an engineer and i see how resourceful he is, he doesn't want anything to be thrown away that can still be used for the future.
I really appreciate your compliments for the filipino. THANK YOU

Compared to the common laziness and wastefulness I've seen while living in America my entire life, this doesn't surprise me. The poorer you are, the more resourceful you become because you value your items much more. I've lived in poverty my whole life and I know how to make things last! I can make a couple bucks feed me for an entire week, and I don't complain when I don't have internet or clean clothes because in other countries, some people have never even heard of those.

Yes...I guess some are spoiled and I think this can certainly cause them to lose their creativity.

Hi there,
Welcome to Mylot!
I think wisdom comes from experience and not from education. I have not been to Philippines ever in my life, but I can understand the from your explanation that they are utilizing each and every resource to its maximum. This is very good to learn, especially at the current time when there resources are getting scarce day by day.
Necessity also makes people wiser in their use of resources. Here in my country, India, people are very good at utilizing all resources and creating alternative machines or devices from them. For example, one farmer invented a bicycle which can run on water just by tying canes around it. He has to swim through the river daily in order to go to the work and this compelled him to invent this type of bicycle.
So, when there is a need, there are different possibilities and ideas to utilize all the resources to their full extent. Scarcity also makes people more creative as you have seen in Philippines.

Yes...I have seen.. and as I plan on staying here I will continue to learn and pass what I can on to anyone who will listen. Schooling is not everything as I was taught, it's a step in the right direction but nothing beats resourcefulness.
Thanks for the welcome.

Hi! Im a born filipino and thank you for the compliments that you gave to my fellow filipinos. I think the reason behind our resourcefulness is that were creative and thrifty. It is also a custom here that dont waste any materials or things because we could make use of it in the future. Here are the examples. Plastic bottles are made into vases, monoblock chairs and recycled plastic wares. Magazines and newspapers are made into bags, hats and other crafts. Even water that weve used in washing the dishes and laundry is use to water the plants and clean our surroundings
