What do you think of people accessing facebook at work?

A teen working for the summer at our work place spent the entire afternoon in our office (which I have to say, is not her assigned office) on facebook. It's not an abnormal thing since my coworkers also access it, but not as long as that, and definitely not outside their own offices. I'm not a hater, since I have a facebook account myself, and I'm not looking down at the girl because she's a teenager. I'm just about as old as her. But what do you think about those who access facebook at work?

Hi Harck! I work in an office and I access Facebook during work hours. But only during times that I don't have anything to do and I have finished all my work. Work comes first. But if I'm in a different office, well, that's a different story. I don't think I would have the guts to use a computer and access Facebook there. But maybe if I have a good friend there and I'm a visitor and if she lets me use her computer, then maybe I will access Facebook. After all, I'm visiting and not there for work matters. So saying that, I don't think it's a problem if employees access Facebook during their FREE TIME. As I've said, work should come first. And besides, even if people say these Facebook users use the office resources and that's the internet, the office will still pay the same internet fee rate with or without employees accessing FB. ^^ Cheers.

I totally understand what you felt though. It's like, the girl was invading your office. She's from a different office after all. Maybe she knew someone in your department? Or maybe she got permission from one of your officemates?

Well, she's a friend of the girl assigned to our office for the summer. It's like a program they apply for to get work experience. It's not internship or OJT or whatever you may call it in your country. It's like a summer job.

I suppose that's right. I wouldn't want to put too much blame on the girl since I'm not entirely sure if it was her free time or not. All I know is that all her fellows were busy in meetings and planning events outside while she was on our PC. I might just be exaggerating, but I'm over my irritation now.

Dear friend, As long as that teen is not distrubing the work or may if the work is going well, I feel that bit time to relax is to given. Moreover facebook if it is taken in better it is much helpful alos. But if that is adversly affecting the work and the teen tends to be in negative way. I feel it would be better to limit it.

I really didn't mind, but it was the concept that bothered me. Anyway, she was at the PC for almost two hours, but there was no one else using it during that time since everyone else was busy. Also, I might have been a little harsh in my responses yesterday, but I've gotten over it since it didn't happen again.

i do go on facebook once in awhile but not that often. i would be ok if i did because i blog for work and will eventually have to link my blog to facebook so going on there is not a problem at work.

At least it's part of your work, so it's understandable. When it's not and it's bothering those around you, it's not so tolerable. No one was really at fault, but it wasn't very good work ethics. I just wish it wouldn't happen again, or I might just give a lecture at the wrong time and place.

the girl was being immature. it probably was something she did innocently, she doesn't think it's inappropriate to be doing so. yes i'd be embarrassed to access my facebook in another person's office...and worse, i'd be more uncomfortable if i were new in the company...

I see. Thank you for this insight. I won't be so hard on the new kids anymore. I guess she didn't mean it. It was a boring day at the office after all.

I don't understand why facebook is so addictive. It's just too taxing for me. All I want from it is to be updated with what's generally happening in the lives of my friend and family, not knowing every little detail about them. Sometimes, they're just messing around playing on the site. It's not as if it makes their real lives any better.

First of all, why would a worker have to use facebook when it's WORK TIME? That's pretty unfair to the employer don't you think? They're paying the employees to work and not to slack around. If facebook is also part of the work load, then of course it's alright. If not, then the person or employee should act more professional towards his or her work. Age isn't really a matter here. Whether teen or not, responsibilities should be taken care of.

I felt that way too when I was new to the office, but all most seniors accessed the site when we had nothing to do or when the boss was around. I just got used to it, but I don't really approve of it. I've never used the office internet for that purpose. I usually make myself busy with other things that could be done with the office.

I think it's okay to access facebook at work but they have to make sure it won't affect their job and their performance at work. I am a facebook user and I do access it in the office and all my other co-workers access it as well. We are however not allowed to access any other sites rather than the ones we use for work. But since it's so boring at work since not all the time we have customers to attend to so we do other stuff like doing facebook stuff. But I do make sure facebook doesn't affect my job. I make sure I do my job first before I go to my facebook account. And I also make sure my boss doesn't see my opening my facebook or else I am sure they will surely call my attention. they have seen me though but never had been called for that since they know that I do my job first than anything else.

I understand what you mean about those idle hours at work when there's nothing to do. I'm not such an avid facebook user since it's not my thing. I usually read books or draw/write on my laptop at work when during those hours. I've never accessed facebook at work though, although it's more because the office net speed is unbelievably slow.
