I just recently found out something good for a raw potato. If you have heartburn or plain ole gas you can peel a raw potato and eat it. In just a few minutes your heartburn or gas will start to release. I tried it and it really does work. Have you ever heard of this or tried this? Do you know of anything else that a raw potato is good for? Thanks in advance for your comments.

I've heard that they're good for getting broken lightbulbs out of sockets. If a regular, incandescent lightbulb breaks, they're very hard to unscrew from the socket but if you cut a potato in half and push the cut end into the broken part of the lightbulb, you can unscrew the remaining part easily. At least, that's what I've heard; I've never tried it. Besides, I use those newer fluorescent lightbulbs but, now that I think about it, I'm sure it would work on them if they ever broke.
I've never heard of them being good for getting rid of gas and since you've tried it and it worked, I'll have to give it a try the next time I'm gassy. I'm definitely not fond of eating raw potatoes but I'll give it a try!

I like your potato cannon idea. I guess I lead a very sheltered life, didn't even hold a sparkler on July 4th until I was in my teens! No fun! I'm just glad I didn't know about the potato in the tailpipe idea when I was in my more vengeful stage. (Nah, I couldn't have done that... I've always been too darned nice, dang it!)
Welcome to myLot, menace. I hope you like it here. Word of caution, it's addictive!

Yes...I remember also about using for broken light bulbs. I remember the pastor in my church doing just that. Wow, I had forgotten that one.

That is a real good ideal for the broken light bulb. I will have to remember that the next time that one gets broken in the gargage. I had heard about the cannon thing from my hubby. What else have you done menace? Sounds like a good discussion to start. Thanks for commenting and sharing mental. Keep smiling.

hi rose,
i have been reading the responses and it seems most of us are curious.
i myself have only heard of this heartburn remedy now but i am very interested. do you think taking it like capsules (like cutting it into strings and cutting them again into smaller sizes like capsules) would be good or do we really need to grind it before it takes effect?
i am choosy with what i take in my mouth. when i find it unpleasant to my tastebuds, i just spit it out. but am willing to take it like capsules though.
maybe i will try.
and i like the advise about sunburns.

Hi tiger
Im not sure about that. I wonder if the stomach would absorb it whole like that. I know a trick. Hold your nose while you chew up a small piece and see if that helps with the taste. I actually think it is the juices from the potato that helps calm the heartburn or gas.

Yes, I did know this, it is a good thing to know to because most everyone has a potato in the frig but not medicine in the cabinet. I don't know of any more uses for raw ones. But this is also why I keep regular chips around they do the same thing. I munch on a few and they help.

Hello Rosepedal,
I am afraid i can't risk eating a raw potato since it could give me health problems. it still depends on the person but i am not sure whether i should eat one or not. i could asked my mom though but i think it's kinda hard chewing a raw potato if i have a false teeth. besides, it's better to cook, i can't risk having bacteria in my body from uncleaned and uncooked potato

Hi Knight..I wash the potato well and then peel it. Just a small piece to chew is good. My hubby has false teeth and he does fine with it as well. I know that it worked for me the last time I had really bad gas.
Thanks for sharing and you have a good evening. Keep smiling..

Nowadays eating anything raw is suspect specially because of the pesticides they use. If the pesticide is systemic it gets into the vegetable and unless it is boiled the effect will be there. May be one could go for organic potatoes where no fertilisers or pesticides are used.

Thanks for the tip rosepedal. Never knew the trick or else I would not have emptied my wallet going to the medic. Now that I do not have the problem I cannot try out. Next time maybe. Yah. The other use for raw potato I know of is to use it as printing tool. Cut it in two halves carve the smooth surface, dip in some color and press on a blank paper and look at the result. Hurray! Okay?

GREAT
That sounds like real fun. I have an ideal with that use when the grandkids come over on a bored or raining day. I know that they will get a kick out of that. Thanks for sharing that info with us.

Yes, raw potato is very good in bread. I peel a raw potato and cook it in the microwave, then add 1/2 cup to a bread recipe. This is how I make potato bread, and its quite delicious. Also I try to use ingredients that add nutrition to the bread, such as using buttermilk to replace the water in the recipe.

That sounds good. I have never tried to make potato bread before. Not real sure if I have ever ate that kind of bread. Sounds like something that I would want to try. Thanks for responding and have a good week. Keep smiling.

Wow no I did not know that. I think I would rather pop a couple of tums and see if that helps then to have to eat a raw potato. I wonder how much of the raw potato you have to eat to get the heartburn to go away. If it was just a slice I could deal with that but not the whole potato.

When I tried it I was in some pain with the ingestion. I just took a small slice and chew it up. In matter of minutes it was gone.

I usually just use potatoes the regular way as well. I was told about potato bread which I haven't tried but might give it a shot. Haven't heard of the potato gas curing thing until someone told me and it really worked for me. Thanks for sharing and have a good day. Keep smiling.

I really don't like the taste of raw potato. I can eat them fried, boiled or baked but raw? I'd have to have a REALLY bad case of gas for me to eat a raw one but, like any "medicine", it may be worth the awful taste.
Now, though, you've made me want some mashed potatoes with gravy.

Well, unless you cut a piece off a really small potato or use the rest of the potato right away, you might end up having to throw out the rest of the potato. This is something I have never heard of before. There are times I think it might be worth considering though. (Guess I will have to try it sometime and pass it on along if it helps.)

Wow, I never had heartburn, but it is good to know this trick. I have used potatoes to carve into special shapes and dip in wet paint to use for art projects.
If a potato gets old and starts to sprout leaves, I put it in a flower pot and let it grow. If it is a sweet potato, it makes a very attractive house plant and also the young tender leaves are edible. Not the leaves of a white potato, though. They are toxic, I think.
