It's a hit and miss with me. I adore ripe juicy watermelons and more times than not I have been disappointed I didn't pick out a good one. I have now learned to call the produce guy over and ask him to pick one. I also ask other customers for suggestions.
The one I picked yesterday was good..not the best, but still good. I hit it like a drum and it sounded like a drum ... lol that's what someone told me to do. I also looked at the spot where it was laying on the ground and it was yellow, not white which I have also been told..plus it was pretty heavy for it's size.
I still wonder what else I can do..any suggestions?? Thank you in advance :)

Most of the people are mixing melons and watermelons. especially the one that wrote it is better to smell them because it is only melons who are being smelled to guess whether they are sweet or not.
By the way the only trick to check watermelons is by tapping them, but you need a lot of experience to judge the right one.

From my understanding, the yellow or the white spot of a watermelon should be as small as possible.
The smaller it is, the better it is.
When you beat the water melon, the water melon must have a good echo to get a good "crispy" type.
In my past experience, I still get a not sweet, white content water melon after doing the steps above.
A more reliable technique to get a good water melon is by cutting it into half.
Once it is cut, we can stop all of our guesses to get a good, sweet water melon.

I smell them. If I do not smell watermelon I leave it for one that I can smell.

Finding ripe watermelon may not be easy, since all the watermelons look alike. Whenever I purchase watermelon I used to ask the vendor to cut a piece and if it looks deep red color, I move to purchase. However, do like this. Select the melon which looks nicely and select a heavy melon. Since the watermelon contains plenty of water, so the ripe melon is heavy in size.

Again..I've never heard of asking the grocer to cut a watermelon for me to see if it's ripe...I don't know how many would do that..but Thanks..The weight is something I will watch. LOL maybe I should weigh a few and see which ones that are the same size are heavier on the grocery scale.
