Last Summer I left a couple of red lettuce seed. Then I rubbed the seed into a container with good soil. Now I have lots of seedlings. I am experimenting a bit, thining them at the container and planting the small seedlings to see if the´ll surviv. Up to now, I have some that I placed in containers by themselves. And today I planted some in my raised beds.
I do hope they will live. I will cover them so they are not harmed with frost this Winter.
Do you make your own plants from seeds or do you buy grown plants?

oh gosh I must be the first? I love red lettuce. when we had a house with land I used to buy red lettuce seed and raise seedlings and have a lot of good red lettuce for yummy salads, here in California you can grow stuff almost year round specially in S outhern California. We have also bought grown plants but really they did not do as well as what we grew from seeds. alas all thats gone now. I am in this tiresome retirement center and planting days are past, sigh. also am widowed and my son is coming to see me today, highlight of my day now.

The climate where I live is very similar to the one in Southern California. That´s why I´m going to give it a try to red lettuce in Winter.

Some things we grow from seed. But our growing season is sooo short that it's easier to buy the plants. However, if we want the season to last longer then we buy plants and then also plant seeds so we have a longer time frame to pick our crops.

Same here.
It's said not to plant till around May 15th.
I usually have most done mid April.
This year due to cold and snow I didn't plant things till the 4th or so.
HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB!!~

I´m so sorry for you two . I pretend to have these lettuce as Winter crops. If I cover them at night I think they will survive. It doesn´t snow here in Winter but sometimes it´s cold (O C). That´s all.

You can even eat the small lettuce you thin out. That´s what I´ve been doing.

How exciting to see things grow that you have planted. I know how proud you must be to see the little seedlings sprouting into a real head of lettuce. I wish I had the time of the space to grow a garden of my own vegetables. So, unfortunately, I am still buying vegetables that everyone have touched and squeezed and fruit flies have landed on. Yuck! just the thought makes me want to grow my own vegetables.
I wish you much success with your garden.

There are people growing some veggies in containers. Lettuce takes little space as their roots are small. If you use a small container and good soil it will be enough.

Maybe your mother is tired. It takes a lot of energy to do something when there´s noone to share. It happens to me, now that I live alone.

Half and half usually.
Tomatoes I always buy plants.
This year I bought cukes, cabbage, and broccoli plants.
I planted pickle, sweet corn, onion, carrots, and bean seeds.
I did not start any seedlings indoors at all this year either.

I start my seeds at the terrace and it has a policarbonate roof so they have light and it´s covered from the frost. As for buying seedlings, sometimes I buy onions. I´ll see if there are broccoli plants. That would be nice.

That looks so nice, marguicha. I wish I had the room to put some stuff out this year. I would love to have some lettuce, corn, okra and tomatoes. But I rent and there isn't enough room. Don't even have the space to do any container gardening. I could put some out on my little porch but it doesn't get the sun until the evening. Good luck with your lettuce.

Between you and Grandpa Bob's planting I am getting very jealous. But happy at the same time. lol..
I am going to have to make a trip by you and or he to get some lovely veggies. Gosh I love red lettuce a great deal my friend and hope you get to see a lot of it in your planting.
I use to do both, the seeds and plants, gosh I miss my house so much mainly because I use to do a lot of gardening and veggie growing.

I have pleanty of room at my house to have you here, friend. The lettuce are tiny yet, so you have time to earn money for the trip.
