Online bill pay and other fancy stuff...

You know when you do those opinion surveys, and they ask you if you are one of those people who embrace new technology, or if you wait until you know people who have used it for a while? Well I practically wait until it's obsolete. After all, why invest in something that you will just have to replace in a year? That, and I just move very slowly when it comes to going outside my comfort zone. So here's how I am when it comes to online bill paying. I don't. I get paper bills, I write checks, and I mail them. I'm used to it, I'm comfortable with it, I like the "float" on the funds clearing, etc. And now I'm seeing surveys about paying bills with your cell phone and whatnot. Here I haven't even embraced online bill paying, and they're coming up with something new. So how many of you are already paying your bills online? How does it work? Do you like it? And has anybody dared tread the new waters of cell phone bill payment? Just curious...

Mobile phones have no coverage where I live so mine is for emergencies when I'm driving and hopefully if there is a problem I won't be anywhere near home but rather somewhere I can use my phone. However, I have been paying bills on-line for years and I love it. I rarely visit the bank and I can transfer between accounts as well as pay all my bills. I can set things up for automatic payments and I can set things up ahead of time so the bill gets paid on the day it's due without me having to remember. I used to do phone banking but it was a real pain in the neck.

I have not done online banking and I think most probably online banking might be safe and easy to do.

We have a couple of bills we pay online, but we do not bank online. I will not do the cell phone thing. For one thing, I just have a tracfone, and I am sure it would not work on it. We even go in person to pay some bills, our town is that small. Oh, and I am not going to use an app to buy a pop for a friend somewhere across the country either.

I just wouldn't be safe with the cell phone thing. I may try online bill paying one of these days, and I already do a lot of shopping online.

@GG...I saw that on a news program where Pepsi is setting up some of their machines to send a can of cola to a friend. Not a very good idea I don't think. I don't think it's going to go over too well.

I just happen to do discussion searches on bills. I know this is already 6 months old, but paying bills would not be an obsolete topic anytime soon. Since moving to California last December, I set up a schedule. Every Tuesday and Thursday, I send out one that is closer to due date. Each payment is sent through writing checks. I have never used online bill pay. I think if you are rich enough by earning six or seven figures consistently, online bill pay would be such a convenience. It may not matter too much for these people, if they use online bill pay. For the rest or for mainstream society with varying levels of living situation, online bill paying should be restricted to a certain amount or certain expenses/bill. Paying bills online speeds up the payment process. So, if you are so closed to the due dates like you forgot to send it and there are two days left before the due date, you can pay it online to avoid late fees. Traditional check payment is a way to delay money being taken from your bank account. It's also a strategy for people to arrange payment to be send ahead of time while they deposit their paycheck or any check into their account. Somehow, many have been doing this. Writing checks may be obsolete in the matter of years. I don't know how common are check payment in other countries and culture. In some developed European countries (don't quote me), the concept of writing checks seems to be going away. I better cut it here. I am curious: Do you ever talk about or discuss about your bills with your neighbors? Do you ever compare yours with them or your friends?

Rich or poor, online bill pay is really convenient. Saves you on checks, envelopes (where they're not provided) and stamps, and allows you to decide when the money is taken out of your bank account. No, I have never compared bills with the neighbors.

I do use online bill pay. The bills are sent to the bank and show up in my account online. I then just push on pay bill and choose an amount and date to send. It works out great. I don't have to worry about mailing them. I can go in and pay them as soon as they show up and have it sent on the due date. It works out great for me.

I just went to touch the notice about what I will have to pay for my property tax bill. No great thrill there. It as just paper and I have picked up a pen and pencil and unless it was gold inlaid and had gold writing, no thrill there either. I pay all my bills online from my bank. I find it is easier because Ido not live close to the post office, our city in their 'wisdom' and to save money has taken away the post office box that was just down our street so now I either have to walk 1/2 a mile do to the next one or a few blocks in the other way to the local one. It also snows here in the Winter, bllizzards and then when the snow melts, there is ice. And when it rains it rains all over, so for me it is easier to pay online, even that one insurance bill that comes once a year. It depends on whether you live close to where you can pay the bills and get the stamps. What you do not live close to the electric company, etc. it is easier to pay online.

Aldo it sort of hopes when the post office is threatening a strike. I have some things on order, a magazine that I ordered online, and do not know it they will get there in time or when I should be home to receive them because if the strike happens, well it would be weeks before I get them. But it is much easier to pay bills because if I had to rely on the mail delivery, I might hae to pay overdue interest charges and I do not want that.

Well, the utilities are paid by automatic withdrawal, but I still get the paper bills to prove I exist (I don't have a driver's license which is the main ID of choice most places).

I pay two bills online. I agree with you and don't care to do so but these two I trust and am ok with it. I don't even own a cell phone and would not feel comfortable doing it that way. I like to be in control of my money. I have had too many weird things happen and I will just stay with what I am comfy wity.

Now, i seldom write checks to make my bill payments. I prefer to use the online bill payments services because i don't have to rush to the post office to buy stamps. Using online bill payment is very convenient and i only pays through my second bank account. I am making sure that i don't make payment from my main bank account, to avoid any complications. But, i don't dare to make any payment through my cell phone yet. Not sure how safe is it yet...

I haven't tried to get stamps through online yet, since most of the time i am not at home to receive the stamps. So, it is not easy for me to get my stamps that way. I still need to queue at the post office for my stamps.

I have been paying all of my bills online and do not receive hardly any paper bills. I do have reminders routinely set in my cell phone to remind me when it is time to pay a bill. I also get text messages from my creditors that on which date a bill is due to be paid. I am very technology comfortable and have been doing so now for about 8 years. I bank and pay a few bills with my blackberry and I do like it because I have at times waited until the last hour ( I got too busy to go in online) and have made payments with no problems.

I have experimented with home banking a little, and so far I'm satisfied with the result. I like to purchase just through a web page, go to the bank site and issue the payment, much easier and safer than carrying big amounts of money. Of course, it has its risk, but they are different. One fears to be hacked or scammed, while on real life payments one fears a thief to kill you for the money you're carrying. I often don't like to rush to a new technology in most aspect of my tech life. I like more to stay with what I know it works and goes well, rather to try something new and experiment. So, I'm like you, that wait until someone else tries and tells me how great is that.

I am not comfortable paying bills on-line as in thru cell phone I still would like to have my proof of payment once done, it is possible now a days that technology may not yet be perfected the outcome once the transaction is deleted accidentally through airing or signal shutting down or downtime at times. Although, it is good enough that application and request can now be done on line as this eases the load of attending the long queue. However if it just a small amount to be paid, well make it on-line.

I have not done online bill payment, but I think I should give it a try to pay the bills online. I think it is good to pay the bills online as one can save the time of going and paying the bills. I think there are lots of people use credit card and debit card to pay the bills.

I find it much more convenient out of my bank account. If you pay by credit card, then you still have to pay the credit card.

I used to HATE having to go to the utility companies to pay my bills, or mailing cheques. Only my rent is paid by cheque. I've had internet for about 10 years now. One of the very first things I did was to set up online banking so I could pay my bills whenever I felt like it. I wouldn't bother paying bills by cellphone, because I already pay them all online. I love having the money deducted from my account right away and having instant confirmation that a bill is paid. I have yet to go paperless with the actual bills, though. I'm going to do that very soon, because I'm tired of the paper clutter. I embrace technology as soon as it becomes affordable. It's the only way, since our children seem to be born with a mouse in their hand now.

I do pay a couple of bills online. I pay my cable/internet/phone, my utility bill, and my cellphone. The rest are still with a check. It took me a while to come around to the online bill pay thing. I monitor my bank accounts online so it is easier for me to keep up with everything versus balancing a checkbook all the time. I am nowhere near paying by cellphone though.

With the price of gas being so high I pay all my bills online now. They are pretty secure now so I do not worry. After I pay my bills I have no money left anyway so it would not do any good for people to get my digits. It is very convenient for me and I am able to pay them on time.

I'm not the one paying the bills - so I haven't paid a bill period in a long time. Forget online bill paying for me - it's even been eons since I've actually written a check - seriously! I'd say we're half and half on the bills in this household . . . there are some bills hubby pays online - and others are via paper/snail mail. Hubby just got a fancy cell in which he can pay some bills and is loving it. Me, I just want a plain ol cell so I don't have to deal with that stuff - for bills or anything. Ha ha - not sure when I'll "get with it" either!!!!

I have moved on to online billing. I guess it is convenient. But the best reason I have is that it de-clutters the house. When I used to get the paper bills, I usually don't know what to do with them. It would sit in a pile, and sometimes I forget about them. But, I have not moved on to paying from my phone. I do get the bill for my celphone, but I'm still reluctant about it. Something about getting the bill for my phone, on the phone, and paying it through my phone. It feels unsafe!

Mine go into a bill file by year. Last summer we tossed stuff from 1982, 1983, 1984... Did anybody say "clutter"?
