When did you learn to cook? I learned at a young age the basics of cooking and also from watching my mother cook.. We had no sister that's why we are the ones that cook for our parents. I also learned a lot from cook/recipe books.

my mom taught me how to cook. when i was a kid and used to see mom doing the cooking got curious to know about cooking. first she taught me simple things like how to make tea, then bread-butter for breakfast. then came the serious stuffs like cooking rice, chapatis and curries. I really liked adding new things to curries, sometime they mage curry better and sometimes they just spoiled the flavor. All in all it was great fun, i still do bit of cooking on Sundays and still try new combinations.

I learned from my mom too, and school. I love cooking too, I always cook for my family- and even though it is sometimes tiring it's a really nice reward to see your family eating and enjoying it.

I'm not a cook but I wanted my 12 year old preteen to learn. I thought signing her up for a beginner cooking class. I also found a website www.howto-cook.org that offered some nice articles. Do you have any recommendations that would be helpful?

Yeah, it's really and advantage especially to a teenage girl to learn basic cooking and then gradually moved to more complicated one. This can only be learn from cooking classes. It's a good idea too if you sign up your daughter for a beginners course.Well if you want to learn the usual home recipe just for the family you can just consult recipe/cookbook but if your thinking of a more sophisticated menus you can enroll in culinary school but mind you they charge higher fees. Thanks for your time my friend.

I don't cook very well but the only thing hubby says I am good at is italian food as I grew up in an italian falimly (stepdad) his mom taught me how to make sauce so anything with red sauce I am good at but not much else so I guess when I have time I need to learn how to cook other things

At least you have a specialty as your hubby praised you with regards to Italian dishes. I love the taste of Italian food too but sad to say I'm just an avid eater not good on preparing it. I think what made Italian food famous is on how they prepared their sauces. I hope I can learn to cook Italian dishes too.

Like majority members here, i learned my first cooking lesson from my mother. My mother is a great cook because she can modified and cook anything as she like and still tastes very delicious. Besides that, my mother had lots of cook books which makes me have the chance to learn to cook more many types of dishes. But, i learned to make fried meat tastes deliciously from my father. He taught me how to mix the sauces to make the fried meat tastes very delicious.

It is just like saying you know the song but the song does not want you to sing. And so in cooking there are those who cook but does not taste good and, there are those who cook even without them tasting but ends up good. I think cooking is like an instinct that is already adapted if you were born to be a cook, and to others by mere experience are developed into being a cook as they are used to it. I learned cooking as I observed my father who was a cook then, and also from my mother who only cooks simple dishes and as she always experiment ending up in a very delicious recipe of her own. I do collect recipes too and watch videos to follow some techniques and arts in cooking.

Yes, it's easy to say you know how to cook but it's hard to be a good cook. One must have the patience and determination to be really a good one.Like you said there are those who cooked without even tasting it but ends up good. They are the real ones because they follow the measurement required for a dish to be good.So you must be a good cook too same as your father.I have collection of cookbooks too just in case i want to try new dish for my family. Thanks my friend for your time.

Well, you said your father was a cook then so he must have the genes of his grandfather. He loves to eat so maybe he wants to cook something that he like to try by cooking it himself and he could do it by learning it in culinary school.Tuition is a bit high in culinary school but it's in demand now, maybe he wants to work abroad or in hotel as chef.thanks again my friend.

I have a son who will be taking a culinary course this coming school year and as I keep on thinking that my son is very wacky and crazy, I can not help it but laugh at him because when he cooks the mess is insurmountable and I am hoping he will get the discipline from the school. He only loves to eat the reason why he enrolled to that course and I hope the tuition fee will not be wasted.

So it's your grandmother who taught you how to cook soup as a starter for meals and of coarse the basics I guess you've learned while watching your Mom's cooking.Lending a hand in cooking is also a kind of bonding for the family.Yeah, you must have a fashion for it in order to enjoy cooking, so after college you have more time for cooking. Thanks for your time my friend.

Hi. stanley777. I learned how to cook from watching my aunt and my grandmother cook for us, when I was younger. But, honestly, I learned how to cook on my own. I learned by making my food taste unique by learning tricks that make my foods that I have prepared delicious.

Good day cream, Yes when we were young we can easily learn things just by watching or helping especially cooking.Like you said you watched your aunt and grandma while they are cooking and later on you experimented on your own maybe trial and error until you perfected each dish according to your taste.Yes, it's very easy if you have the fashion and remember try to be happy too while cooking as the saying goes and it will turn out what you like it to be.Thanks for your response

Believe it or not, I got interested in cooking from watching Graham Kerr on the TV show "The Galloping Gourmet". That's kind of what got me started and I have picked up a lot of tips from other cooking shows along the way too. Another show, "Wok With Yan" got me started with wok cooking and stir fry. I also picked up some things from my mom of course but mostly, it was the TV shows. I have a few specialties but mostly it's just everyday dishes but I certainly don't go hungry.
• Philippines

Yeah, now a days cooking is common in TV shows.I've watched also "Wok with Yan" I don't know if the show is still on TV.I like the way he explains his way of cooking giving tips every time and his wok which he usually uses. It's really fulfilling after you finished a certain dish and your family or friends appreciates the meal you have cooked. Thanks for your time my friend.

So you learned from your mother and friends.Yeah, Italian food are mostly healthy and of coarse delicious too.I guess their secrets are from the ingredients they used and they practice slow cooking too to bring out the flavor from food. Thanks for your time my friend.

Cooking is pleasure when done in leisure with no p - Cooking is nice.
I cooked when i was a student to save money and also got bored eating outside and such. Cooking student bachelor style for me is simple, basically simple wok and throw everything inside and after cooked throw everything inside a bowl or plate which is more convenient and less hassle stuffs to wash later.Basically learn from online and tv show.Cooking is pleasure when done in leisure with no pressure or expectation.

I remember when I was a kid about 5 years old, I always watching my mom when she's cooking our meals. We are cooking in an old style kitchen using woods others called it as dirty kitchen. The first thing I learned from my mom is how to cook rice when I was 6 years old. During my college days, I also learned some ways of cooking from my Aunt and my sisters.
• Philippines
17 May 11
So, when you are young you already have a fashion for cooking.Yeah, during the early days we used firewood in our dirty kitchen. In those days the taste of food is more flavorful I guess because the dish is cooked slowly with low heat especially if cooked in earthenwares. So you have learned from your mom, aunt and siblings. Thanks for your time my dear.

When I saw your post, I racked my brains out to recall when was the first time I cooked. I still have not remembered it. What I remembered though was that my father is the regular cook of the family, while my mother is good at making desserts. I think I first learned to cook when I was 7 or 8 years old and the food was rice considering that rice is the regular food on our dining table. I learned more about cooking from cookbooks and from the internet.

So you learned it from your father I guess, imagine at age 7 and preparing desserts from your mom.Yeah, now a days with the availability of cookbooks and internet learning to cook are made easier. Thanks for your time my friend.

It's a shame that I don't know how to cook. When I was young, my parents didn't want me to cook because I'm afraid of cooking meat. If I cooked at home, they could only have vegetables to eat.Haha! And I often got my fingers hurted when using a knife to cut those cooking materials. Now I'm learning cooking from my husband because he don't want me to eat instant noodles when he's not home.
• Philippines
17 May 11
Oh, I see. It's good your husband knows how to cook.Anyway it's enjoyable I guess with your husband in the kitchen teaching you how to cook.Just be careful using the knife for cutting the ingredients. Thanks and have a nice day my friend.

Yes, with the availability of recipe books I think anyone can learn to cook if you really put your mind to it.You can even experiment on some dish which you yourself have thought about. So you taught yourself how to cook through recipes and cookbooks,Thanks for your response.

Neither of my parents cooked, so the art was foreign to me for awhile. My grandmother taught me some things, but mostly because I asked to learn. I learned how to make scrambled eggs, chocolate malts, dough, among other various cooking things (such as what it means to "simmer" something, how to tenderize meat, etc.). At twelve, I went vegetarian. Since my mom survived on foods revolving around cheese and bread and my dad was a full meat and potatoes type of person, I then taught myself how to cook. I taught myself how to bake, make veggie lasagnas, vegan birthday cakes, how to make soups, entrees, and side dishes from scratch. I liked cooking once I knew how, but I wasn't ever patient enough to wait while food cooked before I ate it. I met my husband when I was just sixteen, and taught him how to cook within our first few years together. Thankfully, that's now one of his chores of the house...he has the patience! The things I learned to cook from others before I went vegetarian (and then vegan a few years later) are now things I no longer need to know. So I guess you could say that everything I know and put to use today, I taught myself. I'm so glad I went vegetarian, because otherwise, I doubt I would know how to make more than a TV dinner today.

So your family must be well-off I guess, they must have hired some helpers to do the cooking for your family or maybe since you said your mother foods revolves around cheese and bread so no need to cook. Most grandmothers I know really are good cooks and your grandmother taught you because you said you want to learn.Preparing the ingredients you needed for cooking a dish consumes longer time than the actual cooking itself so one must have patience in doing so.Since you went vegetarian I guess it's different from what your grandma has taught you and everything you know about vegetarian dish you taught it yourself. Thanks for the response my friend.

I don't think anyone really taught me how to cook. Maybe that is why I am not a very good cook, and I don't enjoy it. My parents got divorced when I was 8 and I stayed with my father. So it wasn't my mother. My father cooked for awhile and then I took over. I watched my father for a little while, but I guess I just learned from trial and error.
• Philippines

Yes, sometimes learning how to cook comes naturally or due to circumstances like in your case. You said you watched your father how he cooked your dish and when your turn comes it comes easily. Thanks for your time my friend.

I learned to cook (a little) the same way I learned to read (a lot). First, by watching. Then, by doing ... Practice, Practice, Practice! `Tis a pillar of Buddhism, so foundational it is! So my mom & dad taught me a lot, and my grandma (my dad's mom). The basic lesson is 'patience when all things are in place,' with 'the proper places for things' (salt in the boiling water, layers of toppings on the pizza, proper mixing of ingredients before laying them under the heat to mingle, etc.) being added to that base.
• Philippines

It's good for your my friend, imagine both your parents and your grandma taught you the basics which is "patience" and I guess you must be enjoying it too.Preparing the ingredients is time consuming I know but once its done and put in place accordingly it will be finish in less time.Enjoy you cooking my friend and thanks for your time.

I learn to cook from my mom, not just cooking but also baking and doing food garnishing. I remember when I was in grade school, my mom did not allow us to play outside, instead she wants us to join and help her in shaping cookies. after baking we are all happy eating the outcome of our shaped cookies. Cooking is the best way to have a bonding time when your family.
