What is your favorite kind of dog?

I am definitely a dog person so I am going to ask this instead of a question about cats. I have four cats and one dog, but the cats really belong to my husband, except the one who wiggled his way into my heart in the pet shop. Fortunately, Skoooter, that's his name, doesn't have a clue that I hate cats and he lets me cuddle him and love him up all the time, and he purrs loudly and constantly.
So, back to my question: What breed of dog do you like? My favorite is definitely bassett hound. I had one as a little girl and would like another someday. My second breed of choice is Golden Retriever. They are so handsome and smart.
Right now I have a Golden Retriever mixed with Stupid. His name is Maxxx and he was adopted from the animal shelter. He is about four years old. I don't know what the Stupid part of him is, but in any case he is very very loveable and does have intelligent moments. Only moments though, there is no lasting intelligence in this dog. I still love my doggie very much though.
Of all the breeds though, for a family pet, I still choose a mutt adopted from the animal shelter, as long as its healthy and good natured. Most mutts have the nicest personalities...or "dogalities". I have to admit that my mutt Maxxx (Golden plus Stupid) does have a very pleasant nature.

I have 4 other dogs but Charlie got one of my females pregnant before I had a chance to get her spayed. So I may keep one of the puppies because it will be a part of Charlie.

Thanks for your response.
What a gorgeous dog. I love black labs. So sorry about your loss. I hope you will consider getting another pet soon because all the love you have to give has to go somewhere and your new pet will understand your emotions and be a great comfort.

What a sweet sad sentiment and a beautiful tribute.
I know its not really the same thing but I used to raise hamsters. I had one beautiful female whom I loved dearly. She eventually came to the end of her beautiful life but I was able to keep one of her babies and I eventually fell in love just as much with baby as with Mom. The Mother was named Elizabeth Barrett Browning. The baby was named Emily Dickinson.
Emily lived longer than any other hamster I had. I didn't breed her as much since she was my pet. She lived well over a year instead of just months like most I had. She eventually developed an absess in her cheek from a cut caused by an oat grain. It got so bad I had her euthanized at a pet store that specialized in birds and rodents and was equipped to perform this service humanely.
I later researched this and found out it is really bad to feed hamsters oats because of this very peril. If you have hamsters it is better to feed them bird seed mixed with rabbit pellets because most commercial hamster food has oats. I used to buy seed and pellets in bulk after that and mix them myself.
Tip: If you do this mixing it is important to make sure there is dry corn kernels and sunflower seed in the bird seed or add them as those are two staple foods to a hamster.

My favorite would be a Chow Chow. I also like German Sheperds, Huskies, Rottweilers, and Malitpoos.

I love them all, except I am not partial to the little yappy breeds. I like a dog that can be hugged and wrestled with and go out in the boys and play. This is not meant to offend small dog lovers, but we have a family joke. When we see someone walking a small or toy breed we say, "Look, it's trying to be a dog!"

My Maxxx is a huge baby too. He is cautious of noises that are unfamiliar and moving objects which he has never seen. He thinks he needs to police the entire neighborhood and barks at ever car that passes our house as well as pedestrians within one hundred yards, especially if they have dogs. He barks at strange cats but not at our own.
As for the mailman, he is one of Maxxx's favorite people. Maxxx knows the sound of the mail truck and gets excited from the moment he hears it on our block which can be as much as 15 minutes before it actually gets to our house. When he sees the mailman he barks and dances. The mailman usually doesn't touch him but he always smiles and talks to him. If Maxxx is in the house, at any time of day, if we say Maxxx! Mailman! he gets all crazy and runs all around the house barking.

I forgot to add, my dog Maxxx loves to sleep with his head on a pillow. He has ownership of the couch with his choice of pillows, and he likes to lie on our bed sometimes claiming my spot and my pillow. He often sleeps between hubby and me, down around our feet or over on one lower corner all curled up in a "circle of dog". It's totally adorable when he tries to look small. He does weigh about 80 lbs and comes mid thigh high on me, I'm about 5 feet, 4 inches tall, so he's not too small at all.

My husband claims to hate dogs but he is quite friendly with my Maxxx on occassion so I don't really believe him. He says he hates dogs. On the other hand I say I hate cats and I just love my Skoooter. He's such a sweet baby kitty. He's actually well over a year old but he's still my baby kitty. He doesn't know that I don't like cats.

Hey Steve, it's me again. What up?
I have been meaning to comment on the fact that your dog is a jack russell. They are wonderful dogs. I have never had one but I have met a few.
There used to be a children's educational program called Wishbone. Wishbone was a Jack Russell. It was live action filming and the dog was assigned a human voice. The dog loved to read, and would then convey many classic stories to children by acting them out, and he was always the main character in the playacting. The dog in this series was dressed in many different costumes and followed many directions and obviously had much training. In a way it seemed maybe a little abusive treatment of the animal but at the same time one has to admit this animal was very intelligent and patient. He always appeared healthy and well groomed. I used to watch faithfully with my kids.

If I had to choose a favorite breed of dog then I would have to say that my favorite dog breed is the Golden Retriever. They are gorgeous, loyal and also very loving. I own a chihuahua and yorkie however, because I do not have the space for a large dog. But I still love my dogs very very much.

Thanks for joining in this discussion. I used to know a couple that bred dalmations. They didn't have 101 but at one time I remember going to their home and they had almost 20. I remember all these puppies and the parents running around the yard and house, and not being kenneled. I was just a little girl, so this was quite overwhelming, but fun.
A few years ago a friend of mine had a lovely dalmation named Walter. Wonderful dalmation name, I think. He was a nice dog but he got jealous when she got married and babies arrived on the scene. He wasn't even that old, but apparently he turned vicious so they had to get rid of him. It was extremely sad.

Thanks for your response. I once had a Siberian Husky. We adopted him from a kennel that bred them. He was only a year old and he once won Best Puppy In Show at a huge dog show. The problem was after the award, it was discovered he had cataracts and had to be retired from breeding stock and show. He never did get to stand at stud. He was a real pet, very expressive with deep brown eyes, grey with classic Husky markings except he had unusual racoonlike rings around his eyes. At a little over three years old, he accidentally got loose because he smelled a female in heat somewhere. He walked into an oncoming car he didn't see. The driver saw him and tried to stop but was unsuccessful. Poor dog. The driver was very apologetic, but really there was nothing that could be done.
