My dogs are getting fat.

The older my dogs get the more weight they are putting on. Of course I still walk them at night and we have a big yard for them to run. My Vet gave me a great idea I thought I would share with you all. I give them half the food I did before and mix the rest with cooked carrots and green beans. It fills up their tummys but has half the calories. Plus carrots and greens are good for dogs. I have 2 shepards and 1 hound and they are doing well on this diet.
Any other suggestions out there?

My previous dog was a picky eater. She was thin all her life (maybe a little too thin, I'm afraid) and I thought it would be a blessing to have a dog that eats without fuss. Now I have Binne and she is a big eater. She would eat everything but I have to be careful with her weight, because she might become fat overnight.
She gains weight so quick, if she receives something besides her usual diet, the next day I can see how her waist has thickened.
I also replace part of her dog food with fruits or vegetables. I give her sliced apples, water melon, peppers, and recently I discovered that she also likes to eat lettuce.
I think I heard before about green beans to be a good food to make dogs loose weight but I didn't know about the carrots. I'll keep in mind your vet's advice, just in case our diet is not enough to maintain Binne's weight.
Thank you for sharing this.

I love the small dogs that think like big dogs. My stepdaughter has a palmeranian and he thinks he can beat up my shepherds. Makes me laugh.

I have got two miniature poodles. Secret is aged 6 and Magic is 5 years old. Secret is about the right weight though Magic is very overweight. Instead of giving then two medium to large meals a day I give them three small meals a day. I like your tip of giving dogs cooked carotts and beans. Good luck with getting your dogs lighter weights.

Well maybe giving them less food. One of my dogs has this problem also but its because we love her so much lol. But she is still nimble enough.

I have an eleven year old dog who does not look her age at all. No, I'm not kidding. People mistake her for being five years of age. I feed her Old Roy dog food with high protein. I rarely feed her scraps, and she is far from overweight. Right now she looks like that way because of her winter coat, which has yet to shed.
I think it's the mainly in the manner of how much you feed your dog. She gets one cup of food twice a day. And she wrestles with my other dog, and runs around the yard. When I am able, I take them for walks, generally a 30 minute to 60 minute walk. One time it was a two hour walk...
I don't think I could get her to eat carrots or green beans. She's very picky and prefers meat over anything. My other dog on the other hand is a garbage disposal. He'll eat basically anything.

I think that if you put the vegetables in with the usual dog food that she eats, she will invariably swallow some of them. Some dogs learn how to filter out the veggies though. I had a dog that did that. She'd take a mouthful and the veggies were spit out but the dog food went down. Now how do they do that?

Hello, Synderblog, its nice to meet you.
I recently read a hub at Hubpages that I will like to share because it is related to your question.

(This is not my hub and I have inserted a link in your discussion because I think that it will help you because it consists of some tips)

That's a good idea, I'll try that to have an easier budget. Anyhow, perhaps you need to run with them to give them a little muscle, I the way they say owners usually hold the leash just a little bit so that the dogs could create muscles. I don't really know how to describe that.
Anyhow, that's a good idea, I can't wait to try it to my dogs.

Dogs like to chew on things, so you could just give them whole raw carrots, potaotes, beans, parsnips and such and see which they like the best. Make a game out of it and have them 'go fetch' and I think they'd soon start eating their fetch. Their digestive systems are so strong that they can handle raw veggies and meats.
I found that starting them out with the vegetables when they are still puppies worked best for me. Liking different foods is mainly an acquired taste. The puppy doesn't know but what that is what all food tastes like and so eats it because it's put in front of him.
I had a cat once that would steal my green beans both raw and cooked. I learned this one day when I was snapping a mess of fresh beans I had just bought. She kept taking a bean and disappearing with it. I thought she was playing with them but when I investigated where she was going, she was eating them. After that I started putting the cooked beans in with her food and she scarfed them down.
