How much do you use your computer?

@GemmaR (8517)

I think my computer must be switched on for 14 hours per day. I know that sounds like a lot, but it's my job and also how I keep in contact with people, so it is necessary. When I'm not using it, it stays on, hence why it's on so much.. What about you? Do you feel as though you use your computer to excess?

you turn off your computer? I turned mine off while I was on vacation, but I leave it on the rest of the time, because I don't want to take forever to reboot...

I'm likely to get on it at any time of day or night so I like to be able to use my computer when I want to...

Somehow this isn't a good choice, especially if you aren't using it mu8ch. If you want to fix the boot speed, you can try tools that will clean the registry and junk files, thus creating a lighter environment for the boot-up. Keeping computer always on is not exactly good for our planet :) Have a wonderful day!

I only used to turn my computer off at night, however I have recently invested in a MacBook which literally takes 20 seconds to load up and 3 seconds to shut down when I have finished with it, so there's no longer any excuse for me to have it on all day. I agree with makatas; try clearing everything that you don't need and you should find that things run a lot faster than they did before. I have found that, since my family all upgraded to MacBooks (there are four of us), our electricity bill has fallen a little bit, probably because of the fact that these don't have to be plugged into the charger all of the time, which is just fantastic really.

I actually use my computer for pretty much everything. When I think about it, I probably do use my computer too much. I think I spend more time than I should, but sometimes it's can be hard not to be on it.

me too spending too much time surfing net on the computer. It's not only unhealthful to our body. It's also straining to our eyes. Even though I still couldn't refrain myself from using it too frequently

It is actually incredibly hard not to be on the internet. Sometimes, I find myself back on my laptop without even realising I was doing it. I'm honestly not sure what I did with my life before I got my laptop. I must have passed the time somehow, but I really can't think what it was that I used to do. I guess I must have spent more time reading books and magazines, and maybe more time going out with my friends, but either way I don't have as much of a "life" now as I did before I found out about the internet.

I use my computer for everything, so if I am at home it is turned on for eight to twelve hours a day. Sometimes it is excess. Sometimes I feel burnt out, but that is how it is. I feel lost without it as well.

I know what you mean, but right now I am out of work. I use it to file for unemployment, and to look for jobs. I think I need to get a job then I would not be online so much. On the other hand, I like being able to be at home and work between odd little earning sites online.
@GemmaR (8517)

I'm not out of work myself, but my job is online (content provider for a couple of websites) and I don't always have work. It's a little bit unreliable, but I have a lot of other little websites that I use to earn extra cash when my job doesn't pay enough. The good thing about earning online is that the opportunities are endless. Some people earn thousands of dollars every month, it's all about being able to find the job that's good for you, and making it work the way you want it to.

It seems that this amount of time is not abnormal in the modern day world then. It is a shame, as I remember when I was a child going on days out as a family and being able to go to the beach or go for a walk without having to worry about how my investments were doing back at home. But now, all that I am able to think about it my work, and I can only hope that one day I am able to save up enough money so that I don't have to worry about that any more, and so that I can just concentrate on my life and get the very best that I can out of it.

My computer is much related with my job, so I do not think I keep it on for too much. Which, by the way, is around 17 hours a day. Most of those hours I am using it, too It isn't really idle.
@GemmaR (8517)

That is my problem too; I am constantly working online so if I turn it off during the day it will take precious time away from the time in which I should have been working which means that I wouldn't be able to make as much money as I should have been able to do within the same amount of time if I had left it on. I am planning to stop using it at the weekend and in the evenings, meaning that I would get more time to go out with my family and enjoy life; as I think that I am spending far too much time online and it isn't good for me.

Hi. GemmaR. On average daily, I spend up to nine hours a day on this laptop. I am unable to spend anymore time on it after that. My time is restricted by parental control. I have asked my husband about this, and he said that he did not change this setting so that I don't have complete access to this computer. He told me that, he will fix it, but everyday for the past week, when I log onto my desktop screen, the parental control icon is still at the bottom of the screen. That means that I have a time limit that I have to be off of the computer. I can't change or turn parental controls off, only he can. He is the admin of this laptop. Every program is set where only he can alter what he wants to, I have no say so in anything when it comes to this computer. I don't know why he will not turn it off, it makes me really question if he was the one that turned it on in the first place. I don't like being lied to, especially when it is my own husband that is lying to me.

It's a shame that your husband has a control over your account; you're an adult, and you should be able to use the computer whenever you want to! Why not ask him to change it while you're watching him do it then you can ensure that he's actually changing it instead of just telling you that he is? I wouldn't like it if my boyfriend tried to change the amount of time I spent doing the things that I enjoy, as I simply don't think that it's any of his business.

But what do you do online for all that time? Do you chat to friends? Blog? Make money? I would view someone who sat online all day just to chat to friends in a fairly negative light, however I would view someone who used their computer to make money and sat there all day in a much better light. I know it's none of my business what other people choose to do with their lives, but it's just my opinion.

That doesn't sound dumb at all. There's nothing wrong with wanting to do things to the best of your ability, particularly if you have a talent for something as beautiful as drawing. My brother is an artist, too, and he spends absolutely hours when he's taken his photographs on his computer cropping, editing, airbrushing, and whatever else he has to do (I don't really understand it). But the results are beautiful, so that's a wonderful thing to spend your time doing.

Hi GemmaR, my computer is switched on in the morning whenever I wake up unless I'm away from home. Yeah, it will be turned off only before I go to bed in midnight It means that my pc and I go to bed and we have proper sleep at the same time of 7 hours or so My laptop doesn't consume much power as it's set to rest mode when it's not in use. It's really inconvenient if we get our pc to shut down and start several or many times in a single day. The procedure is quite boring if doing this often for I surf net and work on the screen on and off during my free time only. Thus, even though my pc is switched on 14 hours the whole day, actually I don't spend that much time surfing net on it. Happy posting

Yes I agree that it takes far too long to shut down a computer and then restart it again and again in the space of a day. Fortunately for me, I now have a MacBook and it turns on in 19 seconds and shuts down in 3 seconds, so I am finding that I can just switch it off and turn it back on whenever I wish. But before, I certainly don't think that I would have bothered at all. I do some other things as well, I don't spend the entire 14 hours online every day.

I use my computer for more than 14 hours daily maybe because it is part of my job. But sometimes even on weekends and holidays I spend the same amount of time on computers.
@GemmaR (8517)
14 May 11
I use my computer at the weekend too, possibly a little too much. The problem with working online and not having any fixed hours is that you can sometimes spend all day every day online getting addicted to the amount of money that you may be able to make online in that day. I guess it's better than just sitting doing nothing, however it can still get a little annoying when you get to the end of the day and realise that, once again, you haven't done much and haven't got any work done either.

14 hours a day is way too much. If i'm online for that long period of time, i must make sure that my earnings are enough to pay for the electricity bills, and the left overs are my real income. IF not, it's a waste of time and money, defeating my purpose of earning online. I'm spending about 3-4 hours online, enough for me to do whatever is there. haha
@GemmaR (8517)

I am in 100% agreement that I spend too much time on my computer. But it's my job. If you imagine people who work for 8 hours per day in the office, they might spend a couple of hours online when they get home too, which would add up to the same amount. I am trying, at the moment, to reduce the amount of time that I spend online by doing more exercise and spending a lot more time cooking healthy foods. I am also learning how to play the piano, and am aiming to take an hour away from the time that I spend online to practice my music instead. It sounds like a much nicer thing to do to and will also save my eyes from being strained by spending too much time on the internet.

20 hours in one day? When do you have time to eat and sleep? Did you know that you're supposed to get eight hours of quality sleep per night to allow your body to stay healthy and alert during the day? I know that I thought my 14 hours per day were excessive, but 20 hours certainly is using the computer far too much. You should try spending less time online and more time sleeping and see if you feel any better for it.

Mine stays on all the time,it seems. I do cut it off from time to time. Not very often,though.
@GemmaR (8517)
14 May 11
Yes mine is on all of the time apart from when I'm asleep, too. There's no need for it really because it only takes ~10 seconds to turn on (I have a MacBook Pro) and I often take an hour or so for breakfast, and hour for lunch and a couple of hours for dinner. I really should turn the computer off when I'm not using it, as it wastes the battery and I will have to buy another one before long if I'm not careful.

I do feel sometimes that I use my computer in excess;no matter how interesting the internet is,we have to avoid becoming addicted to it because it will definitely have a negative impact on our social and personal,so now that it's a beautiful spring in my country,I'm trying to spend more time outside at least in weekends and forget about the computer at least for a few hours.
@GemmaR (8517)
21 May 11
Certainly the internet is having a negative impact on our social and personal lives. I don't talk to my friends half as much as I used to anymore, and I will be lucky if I go out with them twice within a week. During term time, I don't really go anywhere apart from University. The rest of the time, I will just be on my computer either learning or studying. When I've earned a little more money (I just need enough to see me through the next year at University, then I can take a break) I need to be able to do things which aren't anything to do with my computer, and encourage my family and friends to do the same.

I hardly made ??friends with the computer, and for a while, I felt somewhat frustrated by his apparition. Then I went through a period where I imagined he could do more than I thought and I dressed in a halo of hope for a future clear and easy to live. Do not go anywhere without my laptop bag and take, because no computer, no internet, not worth much, are always armored devices that I connect to the network without wizarding can no longer live. We take better care of the modem for internet, rather than lipstick and laptop sits prominently near the wallet with money and cards. And if you were to choose the subject that I would not ever break, is as clear as I sat in the bow on the list, obviously computer. I know today to properly evaluate the virtues and to use it fully, just as he is able to do for me. Happiness is, however, elsewhere. Life begins, sometimes when you disconnect from the internet and close the lid of your computer, even if it will be the best, most accurate, most reliable friend.
@GemmaR (8517)
21 May 11
I don't think I would go as far to describe my laptop and internet connection in these terms, however I do agree that in the modern age, your laptop might be one of the most valuable and important possessions that you will ever own. The things that you can do on it are more than you can do on any other device, and I doubt that there will be anything in the future that allows you to connect to people as quickly at the internet does today.

yeah i also use it a lot.just try to keep the usage time limited.
@GemmaR (8517)
21 May 11
Well, I do certainly try to keep myself to a strict limit when deciding what to do with my day, but then I always think right I could either go and read a book for an hour, or I could do some work online and earn an extra $20. I always choose the extra $20 over reading the book. But, for my own peace of mind, I have to start spending time off my computer, as my life is becoming boring. Sure, I have lots of money in the bank thanks to the internet, but sadly I just don't have any time to spend any of that money due to the fact that I spend my days online making more money. But I suppose I will sort myself out soon.

I don't know if I would call it excess but with 4 of us at home using the same computer...it is pretty much switched on for a very long time....from the moment the first one wakes up to the time the last one goes to bed. I try to limit my computer use now and that as well as the children. So, there are days when it's switched on for 14 hours and days when it's switched on for just a couple of hours in a day.
@GemmaR (8517)

My family all used to use the same computer, but it soon became pretty clear that we were all going to need our own, as every one of us was doing different things and my younger brother is doing his GCSEs and needs to use the computer a lot for his homework, so him and I were having a lot of arguments about who would use the computer at what time. So, I bought myself a Macbook Pro 13", which is the best investment I've ever made. Although it cost a lot of money, I have already earned back what I spent on it just because I am now able to spend a lot more time online each day. It really is paying for me, and I am very glad about that.

Sometimes. And I'm not talking about work. I have a Dean Koontz novel sitting on the table. Long time ago, I'd be at least halfway through it. But I come home from work and trhe first thing I want to do is get on my laptop. Listen to music. Go on you tube. MyLot. I get home from work around 5. pretty soon I'm ready for dinner. But every now and then I'll get a grip, keep the laptop off and either watch tv or do stuff around the house.
@GemmaR (8517)
14 May 11
I find it difficult to sit down to a novel, as for some reason I just worry about how many page views my blog's getting, or how much traffic is flying past my articles, and I seriously cannot settle. I guess that's just a problem that a lot of people have in this modern day though, and I am sure that one day I will be able to control my urges to check my computer every half hour or so. I do like to take time out and cook, though. When I say that my laptop is on for 14 hours that doesn't necessarily mean that I use it for that long. I take time out to go to the shops and to cook and eat meals; I would never be on the internet while I was eating a meal as I strongly believe that meal times are for family.

I use my computer about 14 hours per day too. I work on here every day of the week and it takes me many hours to complete all of my work. I try not to leave it on when I am not using it though, to make it last me longer.
@GemmaR (8517)
14 May 11
It takes me a lot of time to complete my work, too. It's a shame though because a lot of people don't understand what I do, and actually many of my friends are convinced that what I do isn't a job because I work for myself and don't have strict hours. Even though I probably work for longer hours than they do. They also don't understand why I can't always drop everything when they have a day off, because I work from home they just think that I can drop everything and take a day's holiday whenever I feel like it, when in actual fact I often can't because I am very busy and rely on my own hard work for my pay check at the end of each month.

A lot! I'm forever using my computer and I make sure that I am logged in on a daily basis, first thing in the morning. I always have to grab my morning tea though and then I take this to the computer, it kind of makes my computer experience that much more enjoyable! I don't currently use my computer for work related purposes although I would like to. I do however enjoy writing and so I like to try my hand at a little fiction writing. I think to suddenly not have a computer now, this would be an absolute disaster for me, I just cannot imagine this at all! I'm into computers in anycase, I'm referring to the maintenance side and I handle all my own maintenance when needed so there's no charge for technician fees and so forth. Andrew

It depends on how much time available for me to online. If my offline matters needs more time to settle them, so i won't go online for much longer hours. So, my computer was switched on ranging from 2 - 10 hours per day, depending on my available time. During school holiday time, usually my computer able to switch on for more than 12 hours since i am very free at that moment. I am really impressed at how you are able to spend so much time to online from your home.
@GemmaR (8517)
14 May 11
Well it might sound impressive that I spend so much time online, but I have to as it's the way that I earn my money so I have to really. It's only like people going to work in an office for that amount of time. I do take a lot of breaks during the day, and I will go for a walk around lunch time so that I don't end up just staying at my laptop for the whole day. I actually wish there were more hours in the day so that I could earn more, but sadly there aren't, so 14 hours will just have to do for now.

There is nothing unusual about your practice of keeping computer switched on for 14 hours. My system remains on even longer. It depends upon the type of work we do. With so many online activities, if one is accustomed to use computer, naturally the computer should be on all the time we work on it. It stays on even when we are not actually working on it, for short durations. When the gap of idle time is likely to be more, it is preferable to stop it for protecting the system, thats all.
@GemmaR (8517)
14 May 11
That's true, I guess for the people who don't need to check their work and investments every couple of hours keeping your computer on isn't needed, but I have to check my traffic updates several times per day, and if I find that there's not much traffic I have to change my tactic, or perhaps spend a little time promoting. I've also got a couple of iPhone apps on the market as well. Not major ones, but enough for a pay check every month, so I keep checking back to make sure that they're still selling, too.
