Many people argue that a college degree is practically a requirement for not only getting jobs in life but for developing life skills and critical thinking skills crucial to leading a successful life.
Others argue that its a waste of time and money and that many college students shouldn't even be in college.
So what makes a college degree important or unimportant?

Well I've got a college degree I spent a fortune on & am presently doing ABSOLUTELY NOTHING with it. I'm stuck doing grunt work while there's a bunch of guys up in the office who haven't even taken any courses in the field they're working in. None of the people who graduated with me who weren't working in the field already are now. In other words, it did us no good.
Most businesses don't even consider education for employment. They want experience, college doesn't count.
Unless your working in certain fields it's not important.

Yeah but haven't you looked back on the excellent experiences of college? Not only the knowledge and skills you've obtained but the overall experience of college life?
To me that is priceless; anyone can make some cash doing anything. A college educated person has both education and an ability to make cash.

Of course a college degree is important. Many companies require a college degree in order for them to hire you. If you're gonna ask why, it's because it's a proof you studied a certain course that complies to their specifications.

It just depends. My son just got his degree and it's taking him pretty far up the ladder in the two years since he got it...but he did it while working. And his place of employment paid for part of his schooling. I however have a friend who does financing for college students and he said that in this day and age...with the job market the way it is sometimes they won't get anything in their field...and it might take years to recover their monies back!

Good if you have the means to go for a degree! I don't and never have but I have not been overly worried about this. I guess it looks good on your cv at the end of the day but you know how it is, there's a lot of talk about tuition fees and the cost of actually going to university. It would be nice if everyone could get to university but as I understand it a lot of people are making it out in the world now without having a degree to their name.
I don't fancy the idea of going for a long term loan in order to go for a degree as you are going to have all that debt once you complete your course and you will have to pay every single penny, nothing will be written off! I'm not that disappointed that I didn't get to experience university life! Life goes on I guess! Andrew

I grew up in a culture where there was so much importance in getting a college degree. So I did.
Now I've moved on to a place where a college degree is not as important, as the kind of person you are, and the kind of work ethic that you have.
But for me, being a person who is not originally from around here, I've come to realize that my college degree is good for one thing. Which is to get me to the door of employers, the rest I realize is up to me.

Well I think that there are some jobs where a college degree can be a deciding factor. If you have two people and one of them has a degree, there is a chance that the employer might go with the person with the college degree. It does show that they have had the dedication to stick with something, all of the way through, no matter how difficult or how much pressure it was. A lot of employers can be impressed with things like that.
Then again, it really depends on the field. The entire economy has really changed the state of the game. There are more people now than ever before pretty much fighting over scraps. Not to mention there are a lot of employers where having a degree might be a detriment, due to the fact that you would be educated and therefore a bit more wise to what your rights are. Not the case with every job but it is fairly common. In the end, it depends on the field.

A basic degree is required in my view to secure an employment or to get the knowledge to do business. It will be good if one stays in the field in which he studied. After joining a company what is required is performance, ability to accept responsibility, positive thinking. My stand is basic degree , if possible should be acquired.

In my country, it is very important to have a college degree because most of the companies requires a least a college graduate to have a decent job. Only a few people are lucky enough to have substantial amount of resources and decide not to go to college but to start a business. For most of the people here, it is much easier to get a college degree to have a more predictable decent income.
But personally having a college degree is a treasure that no one can steal.

I think it is extremely important. The only substitute is a self educated person. Those who would take the time to discipline themselves and be self educated, would probably obtain a degree unless there is some reason that is not possible. The knowledge, the discipline, the thinking process and a better job all are pluses to having an education.
