I suffer from constipation always. Prunes is the only fruit that works for me. But I'm getting tired of eating prunes, besides, they are quite expensive. Can you suggest foods or dishes that I can eat so I don't get constipated? Some say I must drink lots of water, which I am doing already since I am pregnant and I know the baby needs it. I, on the other hand, needs food to help me release those unwanted food in my stomach. My stomach is getting bigger and bigger, I'm afraid to use medicines, because, like I said, I'm pregnant.

Maybe you could try fruits like papaya and melon and other fibrous and watery fruits. They always soften my stool. I think it's pretty normal for pregnant women to be constipated.

Oh, I don't know that about watermelons. Anyway, better safe than sorry. Or check with your doctor.

When I was in my first trimester, I tried papaya. It smells terrible! That's why I stopped eating it. My sister said I must not eat watermelon because it will cause miscarriage due to it's heavy water content. Is this true? I also eat melon but it doesn't have any effect on me :(

When I was pregnant peaches worked for me. Like another user, I am post menopausal, but I had a hysterectomy. I did not become constipated until I had foot surgery and took a lot of pain pills and quit being so active. I use flax seed meal in all of my baked goods. For some people bananas work, for others, bananas constipate. Foods to avoid would be cheese, for sure. Also things that are not whole grain. For some people yogurt helps with all stomach issues like gas, and constipation and diarrhea because it creates a healthy environment in your intestines. I would not worry about too much fruit unless your doctor says so. You need the carbohydrates for energy and for brain development.
Plain or lightly buttered popcorn is very helpful for me. Try not to put too much salt on it. I understand that prunes are not native where you live. You need to try foods that come from where you live. I think pineapple and papaya might help you a lot. I do not know if beans are a part of your culture, but they are high in fiber and useful to fight constipation as well.

Avoid foods that are fatty, and if possible eat fruits and uncooked veggies -make a veggie salad ,the enzymes of uncooked vegetables will help you digest more.

I was always regular until I went through menopause. And then I became constipated. I did a lot of research on what to do. Flax seeds put in your food will help greatly but even better are flax seed oil capsules. I take one every morning and I am as regular as before I went through menopause. Since you are pregnant, I suggest that you talk to your doctor first about your constipation and see what he / she says. If you prefer to do flax seeds rather than the capsules, you can get them in bulk at your supermarket.

Also, you might try Uncle Sam's Laxative Cereal. It is sold in most supermarkets. I have not had it for years but I believe that it is a whole grain cereal with flax seeds. It is very healthy for you and there is a a reason why it is called Uncle Sam's Laxative Cereal. It has been around a long time and is tried, true and trusted.

Yes I have tried apples, but they only make me more constipated :( Lucky you!
I eat only few veggies lately since our food are commonly fried. About fruits, well, I thought fructose is good for the health. Anyway I'll just follow your advice then. :) Thanks!

I would suggest walking between a half mile to a mile each day. Just brisk walking....That will help "move the bowels". Also do a search on foods that cause constipation and try to avoid them...

I don't know if I must walk briskly because I'm almost 5 months pregnant. But maybe I can walk at a leisurely pace for a mile, will that do?

Eat only fibrous food like fruits and vegetable. Avoid meat because that will only worsen you inability to digest food. Also drink lots of water each day. You should also take Virgin Coconut Oil as a daily food supplement. This is very effective in cleansing you colon and this will totally solve your problem about circulation. Remember a clean colon is a cancer free colon so if you don't wanna have cancer make sure you have regular vowel movement and Virgin Coconut Oil has been proven many times to be very effective in solving constipation.

If you like corn, maybe that´s your answer. In Summer I eat corb on the cob, a bit of salt and a bit of butter while is still hot. I also like corn and tomato sald. It is made with either corn on the cob or with the frozen whole kernels (cooked) and cut up tomato. Season them with some oil, salt and minced fresh parsley or coriander leaves.
Corn has a lot of tough fiber. But I hate to eat food just because it´s healthy. This is yummy AND healthy.

If you've got dilemma with constipation, you must know about the foods that alleviate constipation. There are some changes that you can make to your diet in order to ease some of the symptoms of constipation. These plain changes can make a world of difference in your digestive health. One of the main reasons that you may be experiencing constipation is a deficient of fiber in your diet. Fiber rich foods like fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains are harshly lacking in our modern diet. Most of us depend on wrap up meals and fast foods to get through our days. Even meals at restaurants can have low fiber counts. As well as fiber rich foods that alleviate constipation should be your first step in changing your diet. Fiber is a food that alleviates constipation, and it also helps avert hemorrhoids and lessen blood cholesterol levels. Dietary fiber comes from the parts of plants that aren't digested in the intestinal tract. Fiber combines water to your digested food and makes stools softer and bulkier, so making it easier to pass. Even though there is natural fiber in all fresh foods, a few have more fiber than others. The top of the list for fiber rich foods that alleviate constipation includes raspberries, blackberries, strawberries, rye, broccoli, green beans, and apples with the skin, stone ground whole wheat, peanuts, walnuts and turnip greens. Make it a routine of including more fresh foods in your diet. Start looking at the diet information on the sides of packaged foods to see how much fiber you are getting. Your every day intake of fiber should be between 25 and 30 grams for adults.

Hi LilacFaye, COngratulations to you! Is this your first time? Pregnancy does coause severe constipation and is really trying. What I did was I used to keep eating handfuls of raisins (dried grapes) whenever I could and I expect they are less expensive than prunes. A very good home remedy that we Indians have for severe constipation is to drink a cup of hot water to which a spoonful of clarified butter is added. This works really well. Also eating lot of veggies should do the trick. Do take care of yourself! :)
