Hullo friends. Good morning , afternoon and evening. I have watched countless shows talking about the difference of suburban and city life. Question is , given a chance...would you prefer to live in a suburbs or the city and why is that so?
Supposedly the wife wishes to live in the city and the husband in the suburbs. Who should give and or how can they make the best conclusion out of it all.
Answer this hypothetical question in your own way. The best response award awaits informative answers. Have a nice day to all.

well, while I live in a large city (15th largest in the U.S.) I don't live what I consider "in the city" because I would consider living in apartments, surrounded by high rises and offices to be "in the city" not living in a neighborhood with houses and apartment complexes around.
Heck, Houston is like the 6th largest city in the U.S. and they have COWS where I would consider inside the city limits!!!
(despite it being the 6th largest city, Houston covers the 2nd largest AREA after Los Angeles)
so, I think that while I technically live in the city, I consider it more of a suburban area because I'm not surrounded by high rises - the area of Austin that fits that description is actually a pretty small area. I have a couple of fields within walking distance if I were so inclined to go there (and get ticks and the like)...
So, I guess I have to say that this is the way I was brought up, and I would rather live in this suburban kind of neighborhood....
I know some like living in rural areas, but unless I was able to have land and horses, I wouldn't want that - and my health wouldn't allow that now anyway...

Austin has zoning so you really don't find livestock in town, unlike Houston - but...
Oh look! Houston is now the 4th largest city in the U.S.!
City - Texas size - U.S. size
Houston - 1 - 4
San Antonio - 2 - 7
Dallas - 3 - 9
Austin - 4 - 14
and lookie... Austin has advanced a rank too!
Fort Worth - 5 - 16
El Paso - 6 - 19
Now you know why Texas is the second largest state in POPULATION as well as square meters!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Texas
BTW, Austin is located on the Balcones Fault
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balcones_Fault
We are on the eastern edge of the Texas Hill Country and the Coastal Plains so if you think of old westerns, you are probably wrong, Lonesome Dove was, however, filmed in the area tho I've never seen it.

Thanks for all these facts and links Elic .. your answer is the best too , amongst one or two others.
Oh OK , no wonder Texas is the second largest .. love it there...I should think so although I've never been. Hopefully someday I will.
I know this will be a stupid question but are there haunted stories in your areas? No , wait don't answer , I'll start a discussion after this..

WOW! 15th largest and Houston the 6th largest in the city ... awesome facts there. Yes ...there's just too many high rises building nowadays and it just takes away the beauty from nature... I mean it's different and I prefer something on the ground and close to the sea or nature , that would be awesome...
Oh yes , too rural will be off for me too ...since I've yet to learn to ride a horse as well. If you ask me , I'd say you have the best of both worlds..if you are bored you can go to one side and then the other..

for me personally, I'd preferred to live in the suburb. why? because it is away from pollution, the air is fresh and no noise. I am glad that me and my husband both love to live in the suburb. So, there's no argument between us of where we should live.

I have only lived in the Suburbs. I would live in both. I dream big. My ideal would be to have a penthouse in the city of Chicago and have a cottage-like house in Up State New York. And A villa In Tuscany. But I will always be in the Burbs in real life. The pace is calmer and in my city people are kind. And with my temper that is best.

It's sururban for me!! I like life there because it's relaxing with lots of scenery and nature. It's a much slower pace compared to the city. City life is exciting because of the shopping, food and endless fun. BUt that's because we have been exposed to it since young. As one grows older, we will find those excitment not as exciting at all. AT the end of it, they are all the same, buildings, lights, lands being wasted away for useless things.. haha =D

What makes the difference between city life and suburb life are the lights.. Without those lights, they are just ordinary buildings, with no history, no culture, nothing to the name. Take a look at MBS, ION, Singapore Flyer, they might look good in the day, but once the lights are out, they too fade into the dark.. haha =D

That's true bro ...miss the kampung days right ...or somewhere close to it. I've never lived in a village before but I've been there and it's awesome..the closest to it will be the suburbs. City life can be boring ...too much wastefulness of lights and whatnot. True2..

I prefer to live in the suburbs, where life is a bit laid back and not fast paced like that in the city.
In the suburbs, or in our Philippine term , the province, you could easily get a jeepney to get into your office. There may be traffic , but not as long as that in the city. Pollution is very much less. Cost of living is low.
For me, the city would be something to go to, in order to shop for items not normally found int eh province. It is something where you could go to be updated with the modern world.

Nowadays in India even suburbs are also having all the modern facilities like power, computer, internet etc. I may not mind living in suburban. If the wife wants city then I will stay in city.
I desire a village life - say hindu temples, less crowd -- and the modern comforts of AC, internet etc,.
have a good day

I cannot for the life of me fathom why anyone would want to live in an urban center. Small towns appeal more to me. I like to be within a half hour drive of good shopping and within an hour of some nice ocean beaches and lakes and mountains and that sort of thing, but I want my home to be in a close knit friendly place but where the neighbors are not in my face.

Me too ..I love small towns as well , peaceful and relax not like in busy bees environment ... I love my neighbors... if I could have a suburban area (filled with nature) and my neighbors close by that will be awesome...but not like in your face too like you've said. My current neighbors are awesome , so I like that kind of setting...

Well, I live in a rural area, not city, not suburbs. However, 1.7 miles from here is a convenience store and gas station. I could walk there if absolutely necessary, although my body would be screaming before I even got halfway. Still, I would not starve as long as I could get there.
The city closest to where I live is about 7 or 8 miles from here, not far as long as you have a vehicle. Modern conveniences galore, even a mall and movie theater!
So, I get the peace and tranquility of living in the country but everything I could want or need is within 10 miles.
Now, why do I prefer it here? I've wanted to live in the country since I was a little girl. My parents would often take day trips into the country and I adored it. I've never been much of a party girl so living where there is always something going on has never appealed to me. I have, however, lived within walking distance of my job, groceries, laundromat, restaurant, etc. and loved it at the time but I was single, no kids, and putting myself through college so owning a car was not an option at the time. I couldn't afford one so living there was great. Oh, I lived within walking distance of the university I was attending, too.
But, I've always loved growing my own food or going for walks and "finding" food along the way. We had many neighbors with fruit trees, strawberry patches, etc. who had no problem sharing what they had with us kids. Wild blackberry bushes were exciting to find because I loved them and there were plenty where I lived. Okay, I lived in Baltimore City but near the suburban border so it was less like a city than a suburb. Busses ran nearby so transportation was never a problem. They ran from near our house all the way downtown.
I adore where I'm living now as I have 3+ acres and have planted just about every kind of fruit/nut tree and berry bush that will grow in this area. I have my own strawberry patch, kiwi and grape vines. It's ideal for what I've always wanted except that there is no public transportation this far out of the city. I'm okay as long as I never have car problems but my son lives just 12 miles away and I can always count on him to help me out if I ever have car problems.
I agree with another comment about it largely depending on your age. My sons never liked living so far away from all the, umm, action. They're both in their 20's (at least for the next 29 days, then my oldest turns 30) and got quite bored around here because there's usually no one around to even talk to and fishing on the lake or gardening just isn't active enough. I can understand that.
So, has anyone asked you what you thought about this question? If not, what do you prefer?

Thank you my friend. I'm really inspired reading your answer..
Here in Singapore , the housing system is a bit different. New flats are being built and although smaller makes many young couples happy because they have a love nest to reside on. And the closer to parents the better and the system here is in such a way that we can choose to live close by to our parents. So I wouldn't worry too much about the shortage of homes because there will always be one ..either new or resale. There's also the option of renting...for those who are not sufficient to purchase a home yet. And unfortunately there's no suburban living in Singapore ...kind of like a modern city life. It would be cool to have like a big forested area with a home nearby where nature is at its best. But Singapore is a small country so we have to make do with what's available. I like it how you describe living on a 3+ acres ..that's just cool not because of the space but because of the freedom to run around and do things that you want , in your own privacy. Thanks for your answer. If there's a second best answer , it will definitely go to you.

I was born & bred to be a country girl!!! At the age of 19, I moved to our Nation's capital to escape the country. Boy was I in for a SHOCK!!! I didn't know there were places without grass or trees!!! Being single, I lived in the city for several years as it was convenient & I could walk to any place I needed to go!!! After getting married, we moved to the suburbs because is was more economical for a family of 3. I NEVER got used to the commute to the city, so I was NEVER really happy in the suburbs EXCEPT for being with the husband & child that I LOVED!!! By the time of my divorce, the city was so dayum crowded that I never moved back there & I liked that I had a small yard with grass & trees in the suburbs. On one of my trips back to the old home place, I realized how much I MISSED breathing fresh air, how much I missed feeling the grass tickle my toes, how much I missed being able to buy truly FRESH fruit & vegetables & how much I MISSED my family. As the old saying goes..."you can take the girl out of the country; but you can NOT take the country out of the girl"!!!! So, being single again, I decided to move back to the country!!! Now I have to drive 60 miles to get to the nearest suburb & 75 to the nearest city!!! Well there is one city about 40 miles from me, but it is a "small" city & doesn't apply in this scenario!!!
Now that I'm back in the country, I can NOT imagine EVER moving back to the city nor the suburb!!!!

Country girl yeeeeeeeehaaaaaaaaaw ...hahahahaha ..love country living. Though I'm not cut out to be there because there's no country lifestyle here in Singapore ..wakakkaka..it's only the busy city life.
I like the idea of a yard , that's really cool. To be able to run and do whatever we want there ....without anyone around to complain the noise like in city life. I can understand why you love country living then. You go , country girl..
Love your quote there ... "you can take the girl out of the country; but you can NOT take the country out of the girl"!!!!

I've never visited Singapore, so I did some research. NEVER seen a place with NO grass & only basic trees!!! After my virtual visit, I believe I'd spend a LOT of tine at the Singapore Botanical Gardens & at the National Museum of Singapore!!! I must say that the pictures make it look like a lovely place to visit...but I wouldn't want to live there!!! Now, I think I'd prefer the suburbs if life decided that was where I should live!!! I LOVE all the water!!!!

Hhahahah ...there are private homes near these areas and they are expensive. I'm talking about half a million and more ...yeah too bad. Because land here is scarce that's why.
Now the suburbs in your part of the world is enticing..........tell me about it.

I have lived in both. I grew up in a suburb and my first apartment was in the city...about two blocks from downtown. I enjoy both. Living in the city is fast paced, but fun. I miss my old brownstone apartment. It was cozy and had so much character, including natural hardwood floors and a clawfoot bathtub. It was close to my job at the time. One of the main downfalls was the on-street parking, which meant finding a parking spot sometimes late at night. Living in either the city or suburb offers a variety of things to do, and you are close to ammenities such as malls, hospitals, stores, etc. I enjoy visiting the country, like going to the cabin. It is peaceful and offers an oppotunity to take a break from the hustle and bustle of every day life. But I would not want to live in the country because it would most likely be far from ammenities and work. Now I live in a different suburb than the one I grew up in, but living in the suburb offers me an opportunity to look forward to travel to the country.

I don't know anything about the suburbs. I am from a small town that is made larger every summer because of the amusement park. As for city life versus small town life, I prefer them both. In the city, there are many cultural events to go to. Although I hated Detroit, I loved its night life, the discos, opera, modern dance, jazz clubs, play houses, etc. I don't like the hustle and bustle of city life. Every thing is too fast paced. I love the quietness of small town nights. I love the local high school sports teams, especially football, basketball, and track. It's akin to patriotism because it is our city against your city. Believe it or not, I also like how neighbors are into each other's business. Thus, if someone robs your home, the rumor will hit the streets and the robber will be caught before he steps out of the house.

Hi Zed!.
I spend my childhood in suburb area, I had good memory about it. Now I life in major city and I find it give more than my old town in term of facilities. My house is just few minute from big hospital and just half hour to city center.
City has more job to offer its mean more chances even the living cost. Its so hectic sometimes and its so desperate to see something green to refresh my eyes.

I prefer to live in the suburbs where you get the best of both the rural and urban life. In suburbs you get to experience clean living with fresh air and the laid back lifestyle of a rural life. You get to personally know your neighbors. It is very conducive for a child to grow in a suburb where he can play with the other children in the neighborhood and not worry about pollution. Prices of houses are even cheaper than the those offered in the city.
What is good living in a suburb is that it is just near the comforts of the city. You can always experience the city life and it is always near to the best schools in the country. Basically you get the best of both worlds living in a suburb.

I just love the way you describe this. Living in a suburban area is totally the way to go.....here in Singapore houses like in suburban styles are pretty expensive , so we are just left with boxed looking apartments ...I really love living on the ground floor , last time here there used to be houses on the ground floor as in like in a shop level and people grow trees beside , fix a gate or two and decorate nicely. It looks so homely but unfortunately there are no more ground homes anymore. It gives me the feeling of a suburban area pretty much , if only as a gimmick. Thanks for coming to this discussion..

Both of them have their ammenities. I have lived in both of them. I would have to say that the city is more convenient. The suburbs used to be more quiet but not anymore and it is too far from things since gas and everything else went up.

10 years ago, I much preferred the buzz of city life and actually lived there. I could walk into the center within 10 minutes. But for the last 5 years since my heart attack, I prefer to live where I am living now, out here in the suburbs. We have a small village but there is everything we need in the way of foodstores etc. I missed the noise and energy when I first moved out here a couple of years ago, but now I am so pleased that I made that move. Must be getting old! _Derek

hi zed we did live in tustin Calif on the darned busiest street in the city but we were in the burbs just over the city line. trying to get out of our apt complex and into the stream of traffic was truly a waiting game,. Also we had to call a sheriff if anything bad happened. So just find a lovely small city and compromise both of you. I am talking about the hypothetical husband and wife here. A small city here is like a large'town informal and everyone here had a large garden and fruit trees just like in the burbs but you were also close to police, fire dept, churches, hospital and paramedics.best of burbs and best of city si'klet then comprise.oh and the library. even had a live theater. no movie theater but stage plays.

Sheriff ? Cool ...reminds me of one song ..teehee. I like it if the hypothetical situation of both the man and wife can compromise and try to get the best of both worlds; both city and the burbs. Cool. I love stage plays , they are just awesome. Yes , there are those things to consider when choosing the city or the burbs , the things that come with them..

I like suburbs better. I guess because it is a little of the best of both worlds. There often isn't the same amount of traffic or crimes, but you are usually pretty close to the city in case you decide or need to go there. I live in the suburbs now.
I think that if a husband and wife were at odds as to where they wanted to live, they should sit down and weigh out all reasons to live there or not based on their ambitions and future plans. Decide together that way there is no hostility later.
Take care.

That's so true Jenin .. as long as both can compromise and do things which are politically correct and not unconventional then people won't talk. Hehehehe..sometimes I wonder why people care so much about image. Just let them talk if they want ...when they are tired they'll stop. So the most important thing is the happiness of both couples. Why worry about other mundane things...hmmmm...thanks Jenin.

Hi Zed,
I would live where my husband wants to stay coz being a flexible person, I'm pretty sure I could adapt to whatever environment I'd be in. But on the condition that we go to the city (or the place where I want to stay in) every once in a while just so I get the feel of how to live there. Good day!

Well currently iam, living in a rural area taking into consideration of city and ruraly life I find the suburbs that is rural life to be more peaceful and relaxing. I have been staying in rural for 21 years and tell you tge truth it is a good experience to live. In rura we are all been saved from polution noise and so on. But there are also many benifits staying in urban area we get to expose new malls new producrs and so on. My dad is working in aborad and for vacations I go to my dads place at that time I get to enjoy urban area. So basically taking urban and rural into consideration I find rural to be more interesting.
