Selling crafts online

has anyone had any success with selling handmade items online? I'm really into my crocheting, and I've now got a few cuddly elmo dolls, some baby hat and boot sets and some ladies jackets that I want to sell online. I've found a free to list and sell site especially for crafts, but just wanted to know if anyone knows what sells well for things I can make in the future. I'm thinking: - baby booties - baby hats - things that look cute for babies - maybe some shawls - cuddly versions of popular TV and game characters - especially collectible ones Anyone with any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I would remind you that TV and game characters are copy righted - that might be a problem for selling them...

to give you a "for example" there were some cute little things on a Doctor Who episode called "Adipose". A fan knitted (or was it crocheted) a little Adipose of her own and was giving the pattern online and she got SUED!

That's one of those details like Elic mentioned that keeps me from trying to sell a blanket that is called "spiderman" and same with blogging what names can you use or not use?

I'd thought about that, but if I changed an aspect of their appearance and didnt call them by their name, that should be ok. I'm probably sticking with baby stuff initially though. Thanks for your comment, I'll bear it in mind.

Hello la-chique. Baby items do sell very well, people are always looking to show off their cute little bundle of joy. My advice to you would be to think outside the box. There are many that are 'blinging' items for babies, dummies, dummy holders etc. Do a little research into baby crafts, take a cupple of ideas and see if you can change or improve them somehow. Make your items unique to all the others in that category. Popular characters also do very well. For inspiration and ideas try some of these terms in your search engine - Amigurami, Kawaii crochet, kawaii baby crochet (kawaii is a japanese term for cute) I see you are a fellow UK resident, hello =). Take a look at Etsy.com and also we have our own version for UK crafters only Folksy.com. I would love to see some of your work. I learnt the basics as a child but never really took it on. I would love to have time to pick it back up though.

Awww la_chique those are beautiful, I think the hat is my favourite. I have never heard of Zibbet so some new information for me. I will deffinately check back to see your other things. I am now considering getting out my crochure hook and picking up where I left off, though I think it will be a while before I am making anything like you have. Good luck in your ventures xxx

I've crocheted so many things over this past year. I just bagged everything up this week and stuffed them in a closet. I need to get a camera and learn how to put these things for sale online. I've got baby stuff (everything) and adult hats, socks, scarves, afghans, caps, washcloths, dishcloths, market bags, produce bags and whatever else you could think of. Your Elmo dolls and other copied TV and game characters will run into selling problems as I think those things are copyrighted. Baby things always sell well. I have several full layettes done and then some individual booties, caps, sweaters, etc. It's time to get the cottons and other light yarns out and make the summer weight stuff. I'm having some trouble with that as the yarn prices have all gone up and you have to sell stuff in order to buy yarn to make stuff.

Postage or courier fees are the killer! Unless you live in a mega-city, there wont be enough customers. Art and jewelry can have a higher price (including postage) but I doubt if your products will appear economical. There must be an easier way to market your crafts locally.

I would try local craft fairs, street fairs and flea markets, too--I think you might do better there. I would definitely suggest a site such as etsy over ebay, which, in my opinion, is just too generalized for most hand-made items to do well. Good luck!

Hi.. We have been promoting site called www.regalindiahandicrafts.com. Its a site which make jewellery. I too have purchased for myself as you know, girls love to wear jewellery. I have left a small task, please go and do that task as it is valid for UK users. A feedback would be very good but leave that on the site itself. Let me know if you are interested, we can ask the owners to contact you. PM me if interested.

My friend is quite successful in selling her beaded accessories online. I'm hands on to it too because she gets the raw materials from from me. There are only few that she sells because she makes her jewelries and accesories as a hobby not as business. You know what I mean? She say that if business gets into her head, she'll not be happy doing so and gets disappointment. At first, it will not be as saleable and when you'll be known online, you'll find yourself out of stock. I suggest that you go online in your business. Crochet are a rarefind nowadays. When you found one, it is so expensive. Goodluck! :)
