What if English is not a universal language?

Can you imagine our world in terms of how we could communicate with each other especially to those people from other countries if English is not a universal language?
Do you think there could be too much effort in translating some documents, manual or instruction so that when they export the products we would be able to understand it by our own native languages?
What if we are only using our native languages and we have not been trained into English language since it is not the universal?
What would be the case if there is no universal language at all?

This situation has happened in the past, but it wouldn't be possible now.
In fact, our world is now based on interaction between different countries - think of airplanes, business, pacekeeping and so on. Using the same language to communicate is essential.
If every country used their own language, the situation would be absolutely chaotic; translating documents and communications would be much more expensive and in many cases it would be too slow to make many exchanges work properly.

English is an international language for all aircraft operations worldwide. Even if it is a aircraft of a countries national airline on an internal flight, all communications between the aircraft and air traffic control must be in English.
This reminds me of a funny, well it's funny to me being English, anecdote. An aircraft of the German national airline Lufthansa was flying into a German airport and the pilot spoke to the airport traffic control in German. The controller told him to speak in English, and the pilot protested saying that he was a German flying a German aircraft into a German airport - why should he speak English?
Before the air traffic controller could respond, a (very British) voice broke in and said: "Because you lost the Bl**dy war!"

Oh yes! very chaotic especially in airplanes or even ships. If in own native language has its misunderstandings then how much more if other pilots can't communicate well with other agents from another country.
Though I have problems in comprehending the accents of foreigners just like British people or sometimes it could be Americans. That is what you called communication barrier.

If English is not the universal language, I'm sure there will be another language emerging as one. Surely people will come up with a common language because of the need to communicate. I think Mandarin will be a common language since everywhere you go in the globe you'll find a Chinese guy anywhere.

The fact that China is the biggest population around the world then I have no doubt if Mandarin could be a universal language compare to English. Aside from that they have big businesses around the world that they need to negotiate with different people. At times when I am applying job online they were looking for applicants who is also fluent in Mandarin aside from English.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but is not Chinese, (Mandarin or Cantonese) a tonally inflected language? Which is to say the meaning depends on the exact tone and inflection given to the word. That would make it much more difficult to learn and speak effectively than english which, notwithstanding the large worldwide Chinese population, makes it unlikely that it will become a universal language anytime soon.
The advantage that english has is that because of its flexibility, it is easy to communicate in it even though the speaker might have only a slight grasp of the language. This is not the case with many other languages where you must have a good grasp of the language before you can communicate with any effectiveness.

Hi Metatronik, I'm fortunate that I understand English. Even though my language is not that good, at least I could communicate with people whose native language is English and many others who is English speaking. I'm so glad that English a universal language so that I can enjoy reading and writing posts here at mylot during my leisure
Books of law and science, etc are written in English. As what I know no matter what languages there are translated to, if there is any question in dispute, it has to be referred to or based on that written in the English version. This is the great power of having the accepted universal language.
Last Sunday afternoon we met a foreign tourist eating meal at a same outlet. We were happy that we could interact using the universal language, English. If he could speak his native language, French only, it's sure that we wouldn't have a pleasant chat at that moment.
Happy posting and have a nice day

That is an advantage for having universal language at least we can be able to interact with other people from another country even if English is not our native language.

Really Metatronik, I think there isn't any problem to chat with foreigners who speak English. I did meet and chat with tourists from different countries who understand English harmoniously in the most popular local mountain resort here I wish my dream of learning two more foreign languages would be accomplished, so that I could watch movies from those two countries without looking at the subtitles until missing many fascinating and touching scenes for the distraction

Miscommunication and misunderstanding would always be a problem if that is the case. There will also be no unity between the countries since there will no proper talk from our leaders that will happen for they are having difficulties speaking with each other. It would really be a problem, good thing English was learned from almost all the countries and spoken by many as well.

Good thing about it even if we are not required to learn other languages then we can still communicate with other people that English is not also their native language but a second language as well.

hi,
of course the possible thing that could happen is all people in the whole world could not understand each other because they will use different languages, and all people have misunderstanding,of course it will the cause of fighting.

Sometimes they were already using the same languages but they tend to misunderstand each other then how much more with not having the universal language? And yeah it will not cause the war but disaster or accidents as well might also happen.

I'm from Romania but I like english a lot. If my friends need subtitles for english or us movies I understand them quite well. And you know what the funny part is? That sometimes I know the word in english and I don't know it in romanian... And I say the phrase with the english word and the people stare at me.. It's pretty funny! English is an universal language and I cannot see how people would understand each other without knowing this language

There are many words and terms in english that do not have any equivelent in other languages. For example, I was recently watching a Pakistani newsclip about some oil tankers that had been attacked and destroyed. The commentary was in Pakistani -apart from the words "oil tankers."
Now I come to think about it, "newsclip" is another phrase like that..

That is totally normal that you just know in English language then you don't know that meaning in your own native language. It also happens here in the Philippines because there are English terms that we don't really know what is that in Filipino.

English is Universal? I live in the States and I work in a store that is right next to a Chinese Restraunt and I really don't think that English is universal to them. The come into the store and try to communicate and it is like playing charades....it is very difficult. Sometimes they see humor in it and other times they get very frustrated when I don't understand what they are asking me. Just the other night one of them came in and wanted "Meeka". Now I really had no idea what that was. Saying it louder and slower did not help. Finally he pointed to the lottery machine which narrowed things down. We have 2 games that start with an M and so I figured it had to be one of those. It was....Megamillions. Now when they come in asking for Meeka...I will know that they want Megamillions tickets. I think if they come to our country they should at least take the time to learn the language.

Maybe you don't understand them because of the communication barrier. There was a time that I find difficult to understand the Koreans. I am too slow when it comes to accent. In our country that is our second language. Not to mention that is one of our major language aside from math and science. But then our own native language Filipino is not our major subject. That is actually bit ironic in our part.

This one makes me laugh but it has sense. I mean why not? So that we can be able to communicate with other people as well from another country especially the countries who does not use English as their second language.

hello,
OMG! I cant even imagine how will people communicate to each other if we dont have a universal language. It sounds really difficult, thank God we have this language which we can understand each other even we are in different country. I think our life will be harder if we cannot speak one language which may understand by everyone.

Exactly the point, we can't communicate to each other especially to the people from other countries. More so we will find hard to negotiate in terms of business by exporting and importing some products would be somewhat impossible to happen.
