Do you know that fish is the healthiest way of eating animal protein?

I was looking at pictures to send to a friend and came to a picture I took some years ago of one of my favorite dishes. We have a fish (white and lean): the congrio. It´s an eel it has the most awesome taste you can imagine. I don´t eat it too often as it is rather expensive and not everyone knows how to prepare it to perfection.
One thought led to another and I started to think on how many times a week do I eat fish or sea products of any kind. I guess in my case it is about two times a week, but that includes seafood and even some sea algae.
How about you? Do you eat out of the sea´s bounty? Are you aware that fish is the healthiest animal protein we can eat?

I am sure that is true, but I have heard that some fish is not as healthy as others.
Some of them have unhealthy omega fatty acids that would cause the opposite effect that you expect from getting the omega-3 that you hear about. I was going to buy one type of fish because it was cheap and my brother told me that this type of fish was not healthy. I didn't want to mention the name of it without finding some kind of reference. According to wikipedia,"farm raised tilapia (the least expensive and most popular) has a high fat content (though low in saturated fats). According to research published in July 2008, farm raised tilapia may be worse for the heart than eating bacon or a hamburger. The research suggests the nutritional value of farm raised tilapia may be compromised by the amount of corn included in the feed. The corn contains short chain omega-6s that contribute to the buildup of these materials in the fish. "Ratios of long-chain omega-6 to long-chain omega-3, AA to EPA respectively, in tilapia averaged about 11:1, compared to much less than 1:1 (indicating more EPA than AA) in both salmon and trout." Wide spread publicity encouraging people to eat more fish has seen tilapia being purchased by those with lower incomes who are trying to eat a well balanced diet. The lower amounts of omega-3 and the higher ratios of omega-6 compounds in US farmed tilapia raise questions of the health benefits of consuming this fish.[16]"^ Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center (2008, July 10). Popular Fish, Tilapia, Contains Potentially Dangerous Fatty Acid Combination. ScienceDaily. Retrieved July 11, 2008, from www.sciencedaily.com. The entire article can be seen at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tilapia. I do like to eat fish, but I prefer ocean fish or wild grown fish in general as they don't have as much of the problems that exist with any farm grown animal. I don't eat as much fish as I should, but it is hard when you don't feel like eating anything at all...

Hi Deb,
When I started to write this post I thought of the many fish our oceans gives us for free. I don´t think farm raised fish are as good as fish that have eaten the food that their species shold eat as a natur law.

I guess that is why I prefer salmon and halibut. Both are ocean fish and while the oceans are not as clean as they once were, I'm sure they are healthier than farm raised varieties of the same fish.

In front of me right now is a plate with three small tilapia and a small cold pasta salad. I usually try to eat fish a couple of times a week. Some kind of poultry a couple of times and maybe a burger the other times during the week. I do eat vegetables a lot if no meat, seafood or poultry. Have been trying to cut out the red meats 100%.

Tilapia is an awesome fish although I get hungry soon after eating it. But as my diet asks for fish and small servings, I have discovered broth as a way of fighting against hunger

Fish is very healthy in its natural state, but unfortunately, the oceans are polluted with mercury and other things so that seafood isn't as healthy as it would be otherwise. I love seafood and fish of any kind so I have to be careful to not eat it too often.

Everything we eat nowadays is pollute one way or the other. Is seems that we have to choose what is less dangerous and stop polluting if we can.

I would like to eat fish more often, but it is most times rather expensive, and the wild salmon that would be the most clean one and full of Omega3, is even more expensive. So I take a shortcut, buy the cheapest fish and some shrimps and then eat salmon oil from gnld.com
It is one of the cleanest fish oils one can think of, made of only the edible parts of the wild salmon from outside the Norwegian coast..
We should eat three or four fish meals a week, according to the scientists I have listened to, so that would be about 2 capsules of the oil a day.
If we take them with Wheat Germ Oil, it will be a great combination..
I try to eat much more fruit and vegetables than before, so hopefully the healthe will improve more and more!!

Yeah, I think it is the selfishness of man that has caused most, if not all the pollution..
An interesting thing is that the oceans often have the ability to clean themselves without our help, but the pollution has to stop.
Another interesting thing is that the Bible told us in advance, as it has done many times, that a time would come when some human beings would destroy the earth. And in that time God would stop the destroying. It is only in the latest decades that man has been able to destroy the eart..It looks like is time for the big cleaning soon!!

When I was a kid and the planet was less polluted, we had fish very often as it was very cheap. I live in a very long country with the Pacific Ocean from north to south. But first there was overfishing and later the oceans became polluted. There are some fish that can´t get rid of some of the heavy metals they eat. Those are not eatable anymore although some of them were awesome. I do wish we would try to make our planet more fit to live, even if we do it for selfish reasons.

Some of our wonderful fish have been polluted here too. I used to love a fish that was filling in spite of being a white fish. The meat was tender and tasted heavenly. But now it cannot be eaten for pollution problems.

At home, we alternate eating fish and meat as main viand. Wheneve we eat fish, we know that we are eating healthily.
Some fish will be boiled in water, with a tamarind seasoning , tomatoes and lots of green leafy vegetables. That by itself is already a complete meal because it has protein and fiber from the vegetable.
Eating fish, no matter how plenty will not give you fear that it will increase your cholesterol level.

I love to eat fish and lots other seafood, I have eaten it twice a week at times but I try not to eat it so much due to the mercury in it and the high cholesterol. Otherwise I'd eat it everyday. My favorite fish is salmon I eat it once a month. Fish has the omega 3 fatty acids in it,it's good for the heart.

yep i already know it though their also vegetable source of protein. usually get my protein in eating fish and could live even eating only a small portion of animal meat. i also love to eat not only fish but also freshly caught seafood. they taste good and just like yours it is healthy for the body. it gives protein that is not harmful to the body unlike protein from meat they gives the same effect more tasteful and healthy.
